Best Newcomer 2012 – Rita Ora

Rita Ora was crowned Best Newcomer for 2012.

Considering the majority of the comments on her posts hadn’t been very complementary, with most accusing Rita of copying Rihanna’s style, I must say this comes as a huge shock.

The British singer, who is not afraid to take fashion risks and known for her blonde tresses and signature red lippie à la Gwen Stefani, has supported mostly British designers like Julien MacDonald, Stella McCartney, McQ by Alexander McQueen, House of Holland and Vivienne Westwood.

Other designer favourites include Marchesa, Mugler and Stephane Rolland for her dramatic music awards looks; plus, Emilio Pucci and Alexandre Vauthier have provided her with something uber hot for when she wants to take the sexy route.

While I continue to be shocked by this result, I am happy that she ditched the sneakers which she wore with most dresses earlier on in the year. It was so Lily Allen circa 2006.

Best Dressed Teen 2012 – Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning has virtually stolen the spotlight from her older sister, Dakota—and from a host of other burgeoning starlets.

Not only did this precocious 14-year-old actress land a role in the upcoming Sleeping Beauty movie, Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie, she also was just nominated for a 2013 Critics’ Choice Award for her part in Ginger & Rosa.

She is no shrinking violet on the style scene either. So it’s no surprise Elle was elected the Best Dressed Teen of 2012, continuing her winning streak from last year.

A radiant presence with her alabaster skin, her deep gaze and those angelic blonde locks, Elle makes a strong impression whether she’s a girly goddess on the red carpet, a fairy tale fashionista at a film premiere, the girl-next-door for Teen Vogue or an artsy rocker chick covering the latest issue of Bullett magazine.

She achieves such grace by mixing cute with couture and princess with punk, all with a young and fun flair. And she’s not afraid to take risks. Remember, Elle was the one who colored outside the lines and dared to wear a sunny piece from Rodarte’s Van Gogh-inspired Spring 2012 collection at the 2012 Critics’ Choice Awards.

In fact, this PYT often leans towards high-concept looks plucked straight from the runway, favoring bold names like Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Prada and Rochas.

One of her most memorable ensembles of the year was actually an ode to androgyny: the print-happy Miu Miu Fall 2012 trouser suit she wore for the Ginger & Rosa premiere at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival.

It’s not hard to see why Elle has captivated the attention of film directors and fashion designers, carving out a glowing role in the movie biz and in the style world with more panache than starlets two or three times her age.

Promo Tour Star 2012 – Emma Stone for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Emma Stone was a style superhero in 2012, as she crisscrossed the globe for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ promo tour.

The actress was best-dressed in every big city, including Berlin, Rome, Tokyo and, of course, New York and Los Angeles.

She flaunted her superpowers whether she was in Madrid or Moscow, strutting out a range of looks as she role-played a sweet schoolgirl-like Gwen Stacy, a sophisticated fashionista, or a vampy vixen (her most sizzling statement was a glittery black Gucci in Paris).

Forget Spider-Man. Bottega Veneta, Elie Saab, Carven, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Emilio Pucci were Emma’s haute-shot accomplices.

Best Ensemble Cast 2012 – ‘Les Miserables’

The ‘Les Miserables’ cast, including Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne, have taken the red carpet by storm, parading out looks as dramatic as their roles in the movie, which is already garnering a crush of awards buzz.

While the flick has been nominated for top nods by Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes voters (with Oscar on the tip of everyone’s tongue, too), the actors are already winners in the fashion category for Best Ensemble Cast 2012.

From Tokyo to London and New York City premieres to late-night talk shows and promotional luncheons, this ensemble has struck pose after pose. While Hugh and Eddie cut handsome profiles in such labels as Lanvin, Alexander McQueen and Burberry Prorsum, leading the way were Anne and Amanda, who deserved the most attention. (No offense, guys.)

Both actresses stepped up their style game with pretty and provocative looks that pushed the boundaries.

Amanda and Anne, respectively, trotted out a floral-print Brood and an edgy Antonio Berardi in Tokyo, then a ruffled Balenciaga and embellished Givenchy Couture in London, both to mixed review. Anne’s sleek after-party look by Altuzarra was redeeming.

But just as in a good screenplay, a bit of scandal is always a bonus. And in NYC, the starlets delivered the shock factor with complementary confections that were dark, mysterious and slightly goth.

Amanda stunned in Alexander McQueen, and Anne went all-out in Tom Ford: a moody black extravaganza with bondage-inspired gladiator boots.

Best Dressed Film Festival 2012 – Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival is a playground for movie buffs, fashion types and social fixtures, filled with modish moments swooshing around every red carpet screening and after party.

Cannes is a Technicolor candy store of confections, and its supremely outfitted stars have made it the best dressed fest of 2012.

With glowing A-listers like Diane Kruger, Freida Pinto, Kylie Minoque and Marion Cotillard in the mix, and Atelier Versace, Christian Dior, Elie Saab and Roberto Cavalli rotating in the fashion credits, this feast for the eyes in the French Riviera is the most dramatic production of the year.

No fest can best the flourish of Cannes….although Venice did come close this year.

Best Brand Ambassador 2012 – Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has achieved the enviable status of successful crossover artist. The entertainer-cum-fashion designer’s eponymous label is esteemed within the highest style circles.

And no one wears her clothes better than the queen bee herself; she is the ultimate brand ambassador.

Victoria’s secret? Start with slim-line silhouettes; add a good mix of sleek architectural shapes; ramp up the volume with an ultra-sophisticated and sexy vibe; and, get a sartorial combination that works best on a body like Victoria’s.

Her label is trendsetting yet unmistakably timeless, appealing to stars such as Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Miranda Kerr, Naomi Watts and Serena Williams.

And Spring 2013 looks every bit as bright: VB presented tailored separates in addition to those bold body-con dresses, so there’s even more to look forward to.
