Fashionista Of The Year 2012 – Solange Knowles

No longer in her older sister’s shadow, Solange Knowles took the fashion world by storm in 2012.

Even American Vogue noted her sartorial style choices as she was firmly placed on their best dressed list for 2012, joining the likes of Emma Stone, Rooney Mara, Zoe Saldana and LeeLee Sobieski.

We loved her for her ‘stepping outside the box’ style choices, which ranged from multiple prints, African-inspired pieces, luxe gowns, colour-blocking, her love for all things yellow and of course her ‘fro.

She also introduced us to many underground designers such as Esteban Cortazar, Boxing Kitten, Rubin Singer, Flaminia Saccucci and Maki Oh which not only cemented her trend setting status, but also gave a much needed spotlight to these talented up-and-coming designers.

The one thing we could predict when it came to Solange’s style, is that she would never be predictable.

Best Street Style 2012 – Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr makes the world her runway. The sidewalks of New York City and her hometown of Sydney are no match for this Australian supermodel (and supermom), who has incredible street style.

She boasts the uncanny ability to look effortlessly chic and oh-so-sophisticated—even when she’s balancing her son, Flynn, on her hip.

When she’s not strutting down the Victoria’s Secret catwalk or posing for her next big fashion campaign (she’s the new face of Mango for Spring 2013), Miranda is still camera-ready with her trendsetting staples.

She does uptown glam—think pencil skirts, structured frocks and diaphanous blouses—as easily as downtown cool, showing off her long, lean pins in Current/Elliott skinny jeans, leather leggings and chic shorts.

And she’s not afraid to rock a good animal print or exploded floral pattern, or a pair of oversized, python-embossed Linda Farrow shades.

Alexander Wang, Equipment, Isabel Marant, Maison Martin Margiela and Victoria Beckham all occupy places of supreme importance in Miranda’s personal closet; so do Manolo Blahniks, Prada loafers and Marant’s ankle booties.

Plus, when this stunning star isn’t carrying her favorite Givenchy “Antigona” tote (or her adorable Yorkshire terrier, Frankie) while she’s out and about, she has another handsome accessory to tout—hubby Orlando Bloom.

Needs A Style Do-Over For 2013

Katie Holmes’ sense of style may have been compromised in 2012 by her rather turbulent divorce from Tom Cruise—and from Scientology. But there are no excuses in the game of fashion, and there’s no better time than the New Year for this star to launch a sartorial revamp.

She has a propensity for dressing way beyond her 34 years, in looks that are too mature, sometimes slouchy and ill-fitting, and, daresay, even drab and frumpy.

Occasionally, Katie pulls off a good stare-worthy statement (her Elie Saab confection at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar party was divine), but too often there’s a mom-jeans vibe clouding the picture.

She needs to take a cue from her sugar-sweet, six-year-old daughter, Suri, and dress more youthfully.

There’s no question Katie is a natural beauty and has an eye for fashion; she’s the first celebrity face for Bobbi Brown cosmetics and co-represents her own Holmes & Yang collection, after all.

Plus, she’s the perfect hanger with a dynamite post-divorce “revenge” body working for her. Now, she just could use a better closet and a concentrated effort to embrace more elevated fashion—or maybe she just needs a good stylist.

Most Underrated 2012 – Ginnfer Goodwin

Known for her signature pixie cut and occasional smile, you think Ginnifer Goodwin is the most underrated star on the red carpet.

She is never one to put a foot wrong and she doesn’t slavishly follow trends. In fact she’s started a few, so why doesn’t she get enough credit?

The actress kick-started the year in a hot pink Roksanda Ilincic frock (which I still swooned over 11 months on); she lit up the red carpet wearing a bold orange-hued Monique Lhuillier gown to the Met Gala; she took a risk in an unusual Vitor & Rolf dress; my favourite look from the LACMA 2012 Art + Film Gala honoring Ed

Ruscha and Stanley Kubrick was her Gucci ensemble ; and, she can do cutesy as well in Oscar de la Renta.

With this kind of track record, Vanity Fair should have added her to their Best Dressed List instead of… well… you know who.

She’s Got Shoe Game Award – Nieves Alvarez

Nieves Alvarez proved to the world that when it comes to celebrity footwear, there are more than two brands (Christian Louboutin and Brian Atwood) and that there are more than two styles (‘Maniacs’ and ‘Daffodiles’).

The Spanish TV host took over this vacation position once held so proudly by Leighton Meester, giving us an array of lust worthy pumps, sandals and ankle boots is various colours during the run on Solo Moda.

Never did a black pump nor a ‘Maniac’ touch her well-manicured feet and didn’t we love her for it.
