Natalie Portman Goes Blonde

Natalie Portman has hit the bottle and gone blonde for an upcoming film role and there was only one woman she trusted with the job: Hollywood’s go-to colourist Tracey Cunningham.

Tracey’s client list reads like an Oscar nominations announcement with names like Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Emma Stone (she turned her from blonde to red and back again), Kate Beckinsale and Drew Barrymore, to name just a few.

Tracey spoke to us about how she achieved Natalie’s drastic hair transformation which she debuted on the red carpet this week at a dinner for her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied’s L.A. Dance Project in Los Angeles.

‘Natalie makes a beautiful Blonde!’ Tracey said. ‘She needed to make the change for an upcoming movie role, and using Redken’s Blonde Dimensions we achieved a gorgeous, multi-dimensional Golden Blonde.’

A big change like this requires a lot of commitment, however, and Tracey recommends sitting on it for a while before making the leap. If you do go for it, here’s her advice.

‘I always recommend colouring every six to eight weeks, but for a single-process colour, you should really do four to six weeks. Two months is just too long,’ she says.

‘You should treat your hair like you would a fine garment—you wouldn’t throw a cashmere sweater into the wash! I love sulfate-free shampoos for gentle cleansing and I recommend Redken’s Color Extend Shampoo & Conditioner to all my clients. It does an amazing job to keep your hair healthy and vibrant’

‘I’m also really into Redken’s Real Control Slim Supreme right now, which I use pre- and post-blow-out for nourishment. It’s just a really good blow-dry serum. It does everything—it gives shine and life to the hair.’

Tracey also says to invest in some styling tools: ‘Buy some hot rollers—big, big hot rollers are awesome. Everybody looks good with a blow-out.’

I’m equally overjoyed.

Just imagine how epic the Eva Longoria/Lea Michele red carpet diva face-off will be on the red carpet at Cannes 2013.

Bring it ladies.

Lea’s first print and television ads will launch in early 2013.

Let’s hope she returns her hair to neutral before then.

Is she worth it?

Katie Holmes The First Celebrity Face For Bobbi Brown

Actress-turned-designer Katie Holmes has become the first celebrity face of Bobbi Brown’s eponymous makeup line and will appear in a new advertising campaign next spring, as well as collaborating on a capsule collection of colour cosmetics.

‘Katie Holmes epitomises the modern ‘Bobbi woman’… I think of her as the modern day Ali McGraw, who I have always admired,’ Bobbi said.

‘Katie is a classic natural beauty, entrepreneur, and mother. When I met her, I thought she was a natural fit for my brand, and felt an instant connection with her because we have so much in common.’ And clearly the feeling is mutual as Brown was chosen as the makeup artist for the much-anticipated Holmes & Yang presentation at New York Fashion Week.

‘Bobbi is exceptional and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics is a company that we, as women, all turn to because it is make-up that is very accessible and makes you feel pretty,’ Katie explained.

‘Sometimes it is just a lipstick or a blush that makes you feel like you can do what you need to do. Make-up is powerful and I am thrilled to be a part of this brand.’

Bobbi Brown also shared her favourite makeup look for Katie Holmes using products from her own line.

Gemma Arterton’s ‘Byzantium’ Toronto Film Festival Premiere Hair

Gemma Arterton attended the premiere of her new movie, Byzantium at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday in an old school Hollywood Antonio Berardi gown.

And while the Bond actress kept her makeup classic too, with a glamorous cat’s eye and Bordeaux lips, hairstylist Alex Polillo took a more relaxed approach to her hair, opting for a gorgeous beachy wave.

He spoke to us about how he achieved this laid back look:

‘To start I misted her hair with a saltwater spray (try Charlotte Ronson’s A Perfect Mess Beach Hair) and split it into four equal sections. I then braided each section loosely and secured the braids at the bottom.’

‘Next I used a hairdryer to dry the braids and also to give some heat to set the waves. After the hair was completely dry and had cooled down, I unbraided the sections and shook out her hair.’

‘I touched up the super crazy pieces with a large barrel curling iron to give it more of a languid look and then used some Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel styling cream to piece out the texture.’

‘I finished off the look with some Frederik Fekkai Sheer Hold hairspray.’

Hailee Steinfeld’s Hair & Beauty Secrets

She’s only fifteen years old, but she’s already a favourite with the fashion set.

And Hailee Steinfeld’s secret to success is her stylist and hair and make-up team who keep her looking chic while always keeping her tender years in mind.

Make-up artist Nina Park described how she achieved Hailee’s red-carpet look to us for the Erin by Erin Fetherston Spring 2012 presentation: ‘We decided to go for a bronzy, smoky look on Hailee.’

‘For the eyes we used Dior 5 Couleurs Iridescent Eyeshadow Palette in Leather, MAC Fluidline eyeline in Blacktrack on the eyelids and I also used some Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif in Basic Black on the waterline.’

‘On her cheeks I used both Vincent Longo La Riviera Sun Bronzer and a Laura Geller Ombre Baked Blush in Pink Blossom and finally some Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Glow in Pravella on her lips.’

Hairstylist Charley Brown said: ‘When working with Hailee we wanted to create a style with a lot of texture, but nothing too forced or coiffed.’

‘To begin I used the Nalu iron by R Session Tools and Topstyler curlers by InStyler to give a natural texture having each curl roll in its own shape to give healthy effortless fresh texture.’

‘I prepped the hair with Hamadi Shea Spray along with Nourishing Dry Ends Serum from Dove Style+Care collection. To hold and finish we spritzed on some Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray.’

‘The look turned out age-appropriate yet sophisticated and gorgeous – Just like Hailee!’
