Get the Look: Janelle Monae’s BET Awards Cat Eyes

2013 BET Awards - ArrivalsThe classic cat eye is an evergreen trend that always adds some extra glam to a look.

Janelle Monae brought a youthful approach to the classic trend by pairing it with her flawless skin, coral lips, and her signature pompadour.

To create her striking eyes, makeup artist Saisha Beecham patted COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel over her entire lid.

Then, from the crease to the lashline, she applied the lighter shade from the COVERGIRL ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire.

Next, Beecham defined each eye with a clean line of COVERGIRL Ink It! By Perfect Point Plus in Black Ink across the top lash line and then flared out into a subtle wing at each outer corner.

The same liner was then applied to the lower water line.

Finally, several coats of COVERGIRL Flamed Out Water Resistant Mascara in Black Blaze were applied to the lashes for a gorgeous feathered effect.

Get the Look: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Fresh and Flushed Face

"White House Down" New York Premiere - ArrivalsI’m so excited that Maggie Gyllenhaal is in a big-budget film ‘White House Down’ and on the red carpet circuit. The indie-darling isn’t typically a red carpet fixture, and I’m just loving seeing her effortlessly adorable style event after event. She is rocking the pixie cut better than anyone right now, and she’s been embracing the bright pink lip lately, and doing it with flair.

To get all the details on her fresh and flushed look from the New York City premiere of White House Down on Tuesday, we went straight to her makeup artist, Molly R. Stern.

Stern began by spritzing Caudalie Beauty Elixir on Maggie’s face, and then massaged BY TERRY Serum De Rose and Natura Bisse C+C Vitamin Cream into her skin. This prepped the skin with anti-aging and smoothing properties.

Next, Stern applied a light coat of Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation to even out the complexion.

On Maggie’s cheeks, Stern applied Flower Beauty Win Some, Rouge Some Crème Blush in Pure Petunia as a base, followed by a dusting of CARGO Blush in Catalina for an added flush.

For the eyes, Stern dabbed VS Makeup Hypergloss Eye Shimmer in Golden Lights Gold on her lids and a light dusting of NARS Matte Eyeshadow in Sophia under the lash line.

Then she layered BY TERRY Terrybly Mascara in Black Parti-Pris and Moka Brown to extend the look of Maggie’s lashes naturally.

Finally, Stern applied Flower Beauty Kiss Stick High-Shine Lip Color in LS12 Sweet Peony all over Maggie’s lips, followed by the same lipstick in LS16 Petunia Petals just in the center to give her lips a subtle punch and added pout.

Hair Trend Spotting: Half-Up Half-Down Hair

Hair Trend Spotting Half-Up Hair

Wearing long hair half pulled up and half down has all but disappeared as a trendy hairstyle in recent years, but several stars have been spotted with the style recently–in fact, three just this week! It looks like the celebs (and their stylists) are bringing this look back in a big way.

Jessica Chastain pulled her hair back in a low, loose clasp–maintaining the hair’s part–for a casually chic look, while Kristin Davis pulled just the top front section of her hair straight back for an effortless–and might I add very Charlotte-esque – style.

Sandra Bullock walked the red carpet with a messy, textured version of the style, and by keeping a deep side part and strategically pinning strands in place, her messy approach ends up looking the dressiest of any of the stars.

The options for recreating this style are almost limitless by pulling back various amounts of hair and keeping hair smooth or creating texture, so it’s easy to make the style work for your particular hair.

Also, you can make the style even more personal by choosing fun clasps to fasten the hair in place.

Beauty Trend Spotting: Matching Mani/Pedis

Mani Pedi

I hope you’re in the mood for some monochrome, because the stars are getting matchy-matchy!

Wearing the same nail polish on your fingers and toes is a huge trend right now–and Hollywood is thinking red and nude.

Young trendsetter Hailee Steinfeld used a fiery shade of polish to pop against her cobalt blue dress, shoes and clutch, while Petra Nemcova took the trend one step further by matching her lipstick as well. Talk about striking.

On the nude side of things, Jennifer Aniston adopted the trend to fit her subdued style at the Spike TV Awards.

So do you like these matching mani/pedis, or do you prefer to mix things up on your fingers and toes?

Beauty Trend Spotting: Red Lips

Red Lips

The red lip is the most classic makeup look in the book. Marilyn Monroe; Grace Kelly–there is something universally appealing about the striking lip colour. Of course, certain celebrities like Dita von Teese and Gwen Stefani have developed their personal style around the red lip, and can always be counted on to execute it perfectly.

But many other stars have also been sporting the vibrant shade this spring: Kirsten Dunst and Liv Tyler used semi-matte reds to add interest to their casual style at informal events. Diane Kruger rocked a red lip and little other makeup for a striking red carpet look, and Miranda Kerr vamped it up with a high gloss red during an appearance in Seoul.

Want to steal this dramatic celeb look? With a few simple steps, it’s really easy to make red lips wearable. And remember, the super precise red lip from the pinup girl days isn’t the goal! The modern red lip is less precise and a little more ‘blurred’ around the edges.

The first step is finding the right shade of red for your skintone. There are blue- and orange-based reds, and you can test shades by swiping them on your fingertips, and then holding your fingers up to your lips (you don’t want to put testers directly on your mouth!).

Once you find the perfect shade, prime your lips for a smooth base.

Next, use a brush to apply the colour starting at the middle of your lips and moving out to the edges. Using a brush helps you stay within the lines of your lips.

Then, blot your lips with a tissue and reapply the colour again with your brush. The blotting and reapplying process will help the colour stay vibrant for hours.

Finally, use the classic pointer finger through your lips trick to make sure you don’t get red lipstick on your teeth.

Keep the rest of your makeup super simple to avoid looking too made up.
