How To Achieve The Perfect Pins

Ever since Angelina Jolie’s much talked about, if questionable, leg pose at the Oscars this year, we have taken more notice of pin-flashers on the red carpet.

At amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala last week, Jessie J, Milla Jovovich, Isabeli Fontana and Nina Dobrev all donned dresses split to the thigh, showing off a lot of leg.

While these lovely ladies are probably up at 6am with a personal trainer every day, those who have not been dutifully doing one hundred squats a day and hill sprints all winter can also have picture-perfect legs in minutes.

Here’s how:

- Pre-shower using a dry body brush to boost circulation and slough off dead skin

- In a warm, not hot, shower use a body scrub like Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator or Bliss FatGirlScrub to smoothe skin and get rid of any pesky in-grown hairs

- A great razor and moisturising shave gel is a must have

- If your legs are looking pasty or have unsightly bruises, a shimmery tinted moisturiser like This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle can hide imperfections, skin discolourations and scars. It also has a powerful complex of vitamin C and vitamin E to help even out skin tone and Arnica to fade bruising

- If you need more coverage, a body ‘foundation’ like Dermablend Leg and Body Cover will hide tattoos, stretch marks, varicose veins, spider veins, bruises, scars and even burns for a flawless red-carpet look

- If you don’t want any colour on your legs, Philosophy Amazing Grace Firming Body Emulsion tightens and moisturises in a flash, then you can finish off with a dusting of shimmer powder down the shin bones to make your legs appear longer.

Beauty Spotting Trend: A Fresh-Faced Look

Naomi Watts and Stella McCartney showed us that sometimes less is more at the NSPCC Pop Art Ball last week.

The busy working mothers, both in their forties, looked fresh faced and youthful, shunning the usual smoky eyes and coloured lips for a simple no-make-up look.

The secret to achieving this is not to go completely make-up free, however, but rather cut down on the number of products and use just one of the new generation of technologically advanced multi-taskers: a BB Cream.

Instead of layering primer, foundation, concealer and powder, which can look heavy and aging, especially in the summer months, a BB cream can impart a glowing, even complexion.

Blemish or beauty balms act as a moisturizer, primer, foundation, anti-aging serum, spot treatment and sunblock all in one. And while they may provide sheerer coverage than a foundation, any trouble spots can be covered with a dab of concealer, giving skin a more dewy, plump appearance.

Make-up artist Lisa Eldridge, whose clients include Cameron Diaz, Heidi Klum and Cate Blanchett, sums it up: “….not only is a BB cream an illuminator, moisturiser and protector with SPF. It also has corrective and balancing qualities. Your one stop shop to flawless, beautiful skin.”

What else do you need to achieve this look?

Naomi Watts tints her eyelashes rather than use a mascara, and Stella McCartney’s desert island must have? Eyeliner.

Finish off with a slick of natural lip lacquer and this is a modern look that can work anywhere, day or night.

Beauty Trend Spotting: Red Carpet Curls

Summer is here and with it comes a more relaxed get-up-go approach to hair.

So it looks like we’re waving goodbye to the ironed-flat Brazilian Blow-out and relaxers and saying “Hello curls”, or in Halle’s words, “This is what you call wash-and-wear beach hair. It’s ready to go!”

Singers Brandy Norwood and Solange Knowles have also gone for grown-out bouncy curls recently, but whether your ringlets are real or have been given a helping hand with a curling iron or hair extensions, the secret is a great conditioner according to stylist Oscar James, whose clients include Tyra Banks, Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry, Iman and Beyonce.

‘It’s paramount that you start with deep conditioner always,’ he says. ‘Deep conditioning means healthy hair.’

* Here are Oscar’s tips for a great head of curls:

* Shampoo the hair, give it a great conditioner and use heat on it.

* Then rinse and blow it dry. I don’t really use a product before blowing out because when you put heat on a product, hair tends to look oily.

* Use a quarter-size iron to curl all around in no real pattern, and curl it haphazardly to get free-form curls in all directions.

* Finish with a holding spray and a little pomade to give shine and texture and help the curls stay where you put them.

Beauty Trend Spotting: The Teenage Brow

As the saying goes, ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’, and the latest beauty trend in Hollywood takes its inspiration from the bushy adolescent eyebrow.

At the Gucci and Vanity Fair dinner party at the Hotel du Cap, Naomi Watts, Caroline Casiraghi, Li BingBing, Salma Hayek and Jennifer Connelly all sported fuller Eighties-style brows.

Eyebrow guru Kristie Streicher, whose clients includes Julia Roberts, Rachel Weisz and Molly Sims, says: “Fuller eyebrows are more youthful and really frame the face.”

Here are her tips for getting back the brows of your youth:

* Cheat. Grow overplucked brows back faster by applying an enhancing gel every night. RevitaBrow by Revitalash and Talika Eyebrow Lipocils will kick-start regrowth.

* Follow your own natural brow line. Everyone’s bone structure and brows are different. If you’re not sure where your eyebrows should be, run your finger along your eyebrow bone. That’s exactly where the line of your eyebrow should be.

* Draw an invisible line from the corner of your nose straight up towards your forehead to indicate where the eyebrows should start.

* Your brow’s arch should fall just outside the pupil and go all the way across the brow bone, feathering the ends outward to give the eye a lift.

* Use a good pencil, powder, or tinted brow gel to fill in sparse areas. By filling in the growing or thin areas, the eyebrow will appear more defined and complete while also making the sparse hairs underneath less noticeable. Be sure to use a pencil, powder, or gel that’s a shade or two lighter than your hair colour since it will look darker once applied. Powder works better on oily skin while pencil is usually better for more mature or drier skin.

Get Charlize Theron’s Smoldering Eyes

Charlize Theron has been hitting the red carpet hard this month on an international tour promoting her new film ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’. And, as always, she has been accompanied by her make-up artist, international beauty expert to Dior, Shane Paish.

‘There are two looks that I tend to lean towards when it comes to Charlize,’ says Paish. ‘One is the dark, smoky eye and pale lip (she looks amazing in this!) and the other is a softer, more bronzy look.’

Either way he always sticks to the basics: defined brows with contoured eyes and highlighted cheekbones.

To create a Charlize-style smoky eye, Paish first uses a flesh-coloured eyeliner on the inside of the lid to open the eye and blend into the skin tone, killing any pink or redness the inner lid may have.

Then he lines the upper and lower lash line with waterproof liner and coats the lashes with tons of Diorshow mascara.

Here are some of his favourite products he uses to create Charlize’s looks:

Skin: DiorSkin Nude Natural Glow Crème-Gel Makeup and Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation.

Eyes: Dior Crayon Eyeliner – Waterproof and Diorshow Extase Mascara.

Lips: Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Tulip Pink #448 and Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Beige Tweed #227.

Cheeks: Diorblush in Pink in Love #889
and Diorskin Poudre Shimmer Ultra Shimmering All Over Face Powder in Amber diamond.
