Janelle Monae In Christian Siriano – ‘Black Panther’ World Premiere

Janelle Monae joined Danai Gurira, Yara Shahidi, Issa Rae and Tessa Thompson for Marvel Studios’ world premiere of ‘Black Panther’ on Monday (January 29) in Hollywood, California.

I will call this “death by accessories”.

Janelle had a good thing going with this sculptural sleeved top and ball skirt from Christian Siriano’s Pre-Fall 2018 collection, but then she over cooked it with the crown, the tribal necklace and the Heliópolis clutch.

It’s almost comical in its “everything but the kitchen sink” approach.

Had she just added the necklace, I may have been able to get on board with this look.

She was trying WAY too hard.

I’ll agree with you. I came to call Chanel on this one: check the outfit in the mirror and before you had to the door take one piece off. I may have let her have the hat, but the clutch and the necklace? Uh, no. That said, the model’s afro owns it more than the hat ever could have.

Came back to take a second and third look. At first glance, I thought, yeah, maybe one too many accessories. At second and third glances, I realized that I love this look exactly as it is. J’adore.

    I think she looks perfect.

I love this! I think it’s so much better than her monochromatic looks. The blue is gorgeous, and I think she carries off all the accessories well because the dress is fairly simple

The clutch is a no. The necklace is a no (she always chooses these pieces that make her look like she has no neck; so unflattering). Can’t say I’m a fan of the crown, but I could have been OK with it. It’s a shame because the dress itself looks quite lovely on her.

I…ADORE THIS. It looks like she just stepped out of a sumptuous editorial. It is 100% sitting right with me tbh.

Without the hat it would be perfect.
Still, I’m always impressed by her, she NEVER looks dull, she always delivers something interesting.

I love this sooooooooooo much, but have to agree. WIth just the necklace and I might still be breathless. But I do love this. Like, LOVE IT.

    “death by accessories” exactly right.
It had potential but the styling is way off.

    Typical Janelle overdoing it…

Janelle always makes bold choices but what usually makes them work is her restraint and sophistication. An off night for her.

This is Rita Ora’s level of try hard!

This is her style and this look is OTT but I think it works for this movie in a slightly comical way.

only leave the clutch, eveyrthing else is way too much

  16. TeaAtTwo January 30, 2018 at 12:40 #

Don’t like the outfit to begin with but the styling just makes it worse.

I think just the dress without the sleeves and with the necklace would have been amazing. Still colourful, but not comical.

Take away the hat and add a more streamlined skirt and I would have liked this. The accessories don’t bother me as much as the volume of the skirt which does her no favours.

I dig this. It’s OTT and too much, but for this premiere – I love this.

    I see no flaws here.

It really works in the context of the movie here.

“Death by accessories” – I cannot think of a more apt description! Coco Chanel may have said that before a woman leaves the house she should look in the mirror and remove one thing but clearly that wouldn’t suffice in this case.

There is so much dress and so much sleeve in this look that I would have removed everything before I left the house, except perhaps a couple of the rings. This look is screaming out for moderation.
