2017 Emmy Awards Menswear Roundup

The 2017 Emmy Awards were last night (September 17) in LA, and they delivered a number of memorable looks from the menswear department.

Caleb McLaughlin: The ‘Stranger Things’ actor may only be 15, but age has had no impact on his trendsetting, grown-up style. He dressed to impress in a custom Garçon Couture tuxedo that I loved for its bold purple, floral dinner jacket; the colour of which added snazzy, youthful fun to the look. Slim trousers and slipper-style loafers completed the suave ensemble.

Noah Schnapp:
‘Stranger Things’ will not be faulted for not having quite the stylish set of young guns, as I’m even more obsessed with 13-year-old Noah’s style. Statement jackets and cool-kid looks are his current M.O., and that can be thoroughly witnessed in this Balmain outfit. From the royal, velvet military jacket, to his embroidered slippers, he is showing guys three times his age how it’s done.

Finn Wolfhard: Rounding out the ‘Stranger Things’ trio, Finn took a safer approach in a black Prada tuxedo that still wins him style points, though.

Sterling K. Brown: Sterling won the Emmy for lead actor in ‘This Is Us,’ and his classic Valentino tuxedo served him well for the occasion—even if his bow tie needed a slight adjustment. The purple socks were a fun surprise.

Donald Glover: With two Emmys to accessorise his Gucci DIY MTO Heritage tuxedo, Donald made history in the royal purple number that delighted for its twist on traditional black suiting.

Matt Bomer: We can always rely on Matt to deliver polished sartorial precision with his classically handsome looks.

Riz Ahmed: Riz won the Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy for ‘The Night Of,’ and he accepted his trophy in a black Prada tux accented by one of the blue ACLU ribbons we saw on a number of stars last night.

Joel Kinnaman: A white tuxedo jacket always comes across as so elegant—when styled correctly—and this fetching Ralph Lauren Purple Label design was the perfect example. I love the black floral pin, which added just that little something extra.

Justin Hartley:
The ‘This Is Us’ hotshot took a sophisticated turn in this navy Valentino tux with contrast black lapels that had him looking mighty fine.

Matt Smith: The pocket square added a subtle touch of personality to this Ermenegildo Zegna Couture suit.

Jeremy Piven: The actor also showed off the crisp power of a white dinner jacket in this ensemble. I love the sophisticated spunk of his glasses.

Lakeith Stanfield: Marching to the beat of his own drum as he posed down the red carpet, the actor-rapper certainly wasn’t about to wear a normal black tux. This dark-emerald Ermenegildo Zegna Couture paisley jacket fit the bill, with the chain-accented bow tie and rings serving up street cred.

Alexander Skarsgard: Three-piece suits can sometimes come across as stuffy, but there was no chance of that happening with the ‘Big Little Lies’ actor’s Ermenegildo Zegna Couture tuxedo that was ever so handsomely refined.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: Also opting for a more colourful jacket, JTF channeled jewel tones with this emerald option designed by Isaia.

Alec Baldwin: The ‘Saturday Night Live’ star’s Ermenegildo Zegna made-to-measure tuxedo presented an impeccable fit through the jacket. The trousers are where it seems as if a slightly more precise cut and length would have been optimal.

Milo Ventimiglia: Like Joel’s Ralph Lauren Purple Label ensemble, Milo duly impressed with his classic variation that commanded attention with its sleek elegance.

Dwayne Wade: With the glamorous Gabrielle Union at his side, Dwayne kept his look simple and straightforward in a Valentino black suit.

Joseph Fiennes: Attending with Maria Dolores Dieguez, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ actor looked sharp in a Burberry tuxedo that celebrated the glories of the British label’s tailoring.

Colin Jost: Velvet is not just a trend for the girls, as the ‘Saturday Night Live’ actor showed in his Todd Snyder ensemble. I would have left the shades at home instead of flaunting them on this bright blue jacket.

Wish Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things had also been featured, they totally deserve top billing here!

He was dressed about 50 years above his age and stuffy office ready instead of a celebratory evening.

Even then deserving ‘top billing’ among men should be the easiest job when 90% of men all wear the same thing.

The Stranger Things boys are adorable.

I think all the men featured here look awesome. My personal favourites: Donald Glover, Lakeith Stanfield, Riz Ahmed, Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia.

    Lakeith is my fave.

Also, anyone else think that white tuxedo jackets make men look like waiters?

    • Nat39 September 18, 2017 at 21:01 #

There is often such association, but they can also look supremely elegant and sophisticated if worn sharply, Joel is doing a great job.

Sterling K. Brown for me. But there are a lot of looks that I love!

  6. Amanda September 18, 2017 at 20:04 #

To be honest this is one fine line-up of dapper dudes! The trio from Stranger Things most definitely get my vote but only because they are just too adorable!

    • CreoleLady September 18, 2017 at 21:58 #

+1, although I do love Donald Glover in the fab purple tux.

    • Nat39 September 18, 2017 at 22:19 #

      It’s a very good line-up, I agree:)!
(although I have to give points to Caleb – that purple jacket is gorgeous and he really nailed the sleek proportions, looking suave and trendy).

Alexander Skarsgard seals the deal for me as he looks sexy, hunky and polished as usual!! My next choice would be ever handsome Milo, oh-so-quirky cute Noah and the-always-debonair Matt Smith!! These are my favorites from the handsome bunch, just in my humble opinion of course as others definitely have their own favorite swoon-worthy hunks!!

  8. Marie September 18, 2017 at 19:22 #

After carefully looking through this line-up, the thing that I really remember is that the ‘Stranger Things’ boys looked amazing again. Those kids really know how it’s done.

  9. Maya September 18, 2017 at 18:48 #

LOVE Donald’s suit! Although I wish he’d foregone the yellow pocket square.

    • Fanny September 18, 2017 at 21:46 #

Noo! I didn’t notice that before. Oh well, still the best dressed for me as well.

  10. Nat39 September 18, 2017 at 18:41 #

Wow, Caleb and Noah are killing it. Caleb looking really sleek, he caught my eye at GQ Men of the Year awards (but wasn’t featured) and both him and Noah had some good looks at pre-Emmy parties. Some well-dressed men too – Sterling, Donald, Matts, Joseph..

    • Nat39 September 18, 2017 at 18:57 #

…and Joel Kinnaman, loving the addition of the pin, very neat.

  11. meme September 18, 2017 at 18:11 #

The boys from Stranger Things and Milo. I’d have picked Alexander but his pants are too short.

    • Nat39 September 18, 2017 at 18:43 #

Alexander’s suits often look a bit too small for him, b/c he is very tall.

    • elentarigirl September 19, 2017 at 16:32 #

If Alexander’s photographs from that event were turned black and white and shown to someone who didn’t know him, they’d have trouble guessing which decade they were from. Stale as can be.
