2017 Unitas Gala

With New York Fashion Week in full swing, Unitas hosted its third annual gala against human trafficking on Tuesday (September 12) in New York where a bounty of beauties wore their best statement dresses.

Daphne Groeneveld: The model’s inky gown contained many of the current red carpet staples including cutouts and an exposed shoulder. The fishnet detailing was refreshing, but I still got a sense of déjà vu.

Ebonee Davis: Not bothered about showing thighs and boobs, the model donned a white La Perla gown with plunging front and racy slit. I would have liked to see one less detail on the bodice, be it the tie waist, flared panels or contrasting bra.

Barbara Fialho: Shimmering in a Rapha Mendonca dress, the Brazilian beauty accessorised with coordinating Alexandre Birman shoes and an Elena Ghisellini clutch. I’m sure some will be fatigued with more ab cutouts and the thigh-high slit.

Rubina Dyan: The model-artist demonstrated how low she could go in a Marc Bouwer gown. The plunging V-neckline balanced out the shimmering shards of silver on the long-sleeved dress.

Flavia Lucini: Contrasting some of the high-octane cutout dresses, the model championed an ethereal look in an Alena Akhmadullina dress and Jean-Michel Cazabat’s ‘Aria’ sandals. Of course, the ensemble still had a sexy finish given that the sheer tulle dress lacked a lining.

Irina Shayk: Looking every inch the yummy mummy, Irina dazzled in a Michael Angel red gown and coordinating accessories. The refreshing simplicity made her a standout.

Lais Ribeiro: The Brazilian model was bold in blue courtesy of her Julianna Bass’ Meike chiffon gown. While the cleavage cutout might have critics crying for something else, I enjoyed the sexy elegance of the look. The Guiseppe Zanotti shoes, Graziela jewels and Kotur clutch enhanced the sultry finish.

Toni Garrn: Favouring a shorter hemline, the model wore a Carmen March gray dress with black accessories. The menswear-inspired fabric felt a touch too casual for the gala. I also couldn’t get a sense of the longer sleeve and its drape.

Sofia Resing: Also breaking with the gown tradition, the Sports Illustrated model worked a Jeffrey Dodd cady jumpsuit and Legend Amrapali jewels. I applaud her for wearing notoriously tricky satin pants, but the clutch feels out of place to me—despite her trying to tie it in with her red lipstick.

Daria Strokous: Amidst the cutouts and sheer fabrics, Daria was a beauty in blue. The below-the-knee silhouette could have been tricky, but I felt she got away with it.

Natasha Poly: Also preferring a boldly coloured Oscar de la Renta Resort 2018 dress, the Russian model radiated in a red gown with structured bodice and shimmering T-strap heels. The side waves brought more alluring glamour.
