Black Girls Rock! 2017

Taraji P. Henson and Skai Jackson weren’t the only ones on the red carpet for Black Girls Rock! 2017 on Saturday (August 4) in Newark, New Jersey. Here’s a look at the other stars who were in the mix.

Yara Shahidi: Returning to her love of a long-sleeved dress, Yara wore an Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2017 shimmery plum frock styled with Porcelain Chyna jewels and metallic Jimmy Choo ‘Lucy’ heels. I don’t know if it was the ruffled neckline or the belt, but something about the top half of the dress translated as a bit mature for the vibrant young starlet. But, the sheer, pleated paneling ensured a lighthearted finish.

Anika Noni Rose: Flirty and feminine, the actress had some fun in a Dennis Basso floral-print frock that may land in the dated category for some of you. Alexis Bittar jewelry and an ATELIER SWAROVSKI ‘Marina’ clutch completed the look.

Issa Rae: The sheer element of this Leilou by Aleksandra Dojcinovic Fall 2017 gown was somewhat diffused by the rows of embellishment and thigh-high slit. Stuart Weitzman sandals, John Hardy jewels, and a Edie Parker clutch served as her accessories, but the dress was clearly the main attraction.

Michelle Mitchenor: With a precarious plunge and a dangerously high slit, this custom Carlos Antoine design was daring on more accounts than just its highlighter-yellow hue and creatively crunched-up sleeves. An Emm Kuo clutch could be found somewhere beneath the slouchy sleeves.

Dascha Polanco: While I loved this sultry red colour on Dasha, I’m not sure the boxy sleeves of this Tome Pre-Fall 2017 dress did the look any favours.
