2017 BET Awards Red Carpet Roundup

For better or worse, there were many more attention-stealing looks at the 2017 BET Awards in LA on Sunday night (June 25)—many of which garnered stares for all the wrong reasons.

Dascha Polanco: White-hot was the M.O. for the ‘Orange Is The New Black’ star in her Bishme R. Cromartie pantsuit. The plunge made it typically sexy, but that architectural ruffle was like fashion’s version of whipped cream on top.

Sasha Lane: The young starlet has not shied away from directional looks—or tribal makeup—and this Proenza Schouler Fall 2017 ensemble styled with a Sergio Rossi ‘SR1’ sandal and silver python Proenza Schouler ‘Curl’ clutch strongly continued in that experimental vein. Those who don’t love this look will likely only see trash bag-inspired pants. Regardless, I wish the sheer top had fit her better.

Tamar Braxton: To go with her platinum ’do, Tamar wore rhinestones and see-through lace in this Walter Mendez gown that won’t pass the test for those with sheer fatigue syndrome. Was anyone else getting a strong Cher vibe?

Karrueche Tran: Also rocking a new white-blonde look, Karrueche paired her bob more successfully with an asymmetrical Gareth Pugh mini that benefited from its royal purple hue, perfect fit, and trend-forward cape-style back.

Blac Chyna: Between the nip slips, mesh netting, poufy poodle sleeves, and ill-fitting bodysuit, this Michael Costello gown was jaw-dropping—in all the wrong ways. Nor, did it get any better from the back, where cheekiness took on all new meaning.

Lala Anthony: Not willing to revoke her membership to the sheer club for the night, Lala wore a Thai Nguyen Atelier gown laced in a spindly, metallic motif. Next.

Eva Marcille
: Eva must have been feeling the bohemian vibes—or making a pit stop at the BET Awards on her way to a hippie festival—in this Fillyboo tunic dress that had her and her braids transforming into quite the flower child of the night.

Nomzamo Mbatha: This vibrant Rich Factory gown might not be to everyone’s taste, as it could pass as an embroidered craft project enhanced by silly string. However, when it comes to the night’s, ahem, creative looks, this one coloured outside the lines in a more palatable manner with Nomzamo’s bright enthusiasm helping the cause.

Leslie Jones: Who knew a slit-to-there gown would seem so safe. I just wish the bodice piece of this Stello halter gown had presented a better fit as the green hue was glorious on Leslie.

Cardi B: The platinum bob is clearly the hairstyle of the night. But, no one was really looking at her locks with her girls locked and loaded in this Givenchy suit. In theory, I loved the clean, tailored lines and sleek, monochromatic spirit of this red-haute look. The cleavage was just a bit excessive, though.

Logan Browning:
Pink feathers and sparkle put this cotton-candy-pink dress from the Lei Lou by Alex Spring 2017 collection into sugary, twee territory.

Ryan Destiny: I was getting a strong throwback—read, dated—vibe in this Misbhv ensemble that paired a leather zipper dress over slouchy faded denim and metallic shoes, naturally. The teeny sunglasses might be the worst offender, though.

Lil Mama: The lighter, romantic aura of this pretty Steven Khalil chiffon gown was a sight for sore eyes. But, unfortunately, the dress suffered at the hand of its styling including the visible bra cups and the heavy metallic platforms.

Sevyn Streeter: This golden, embellished Yousef Al Jasmi semi-transparent, figure-skimming gown is nothing we haven’t seen before. As is generally the case, the strategic patterning effectively enhances the silhouette.

Lovie Simone: One too many frills, ruffles, and sequins overcooked this Elisabetta Franchi Spring 2017 frock. Nor will I understand her shoe choice; if there was one place to wear silver metallic heels, it would be here.

Amanda Seales: My first reaction to Amanda’s ASOS look was that it had been worn before by Anna Diop.

Draya Michele: The model was one of the few who turned heads for the right reasons wearing an ethereal Elie Saab gown. The colour was perfect for the season and for her skin-tone. I also love the lack of gimmicks and fresh-faced makeup.
