Janelle Monae In Alexandre Vauthier Couture – 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Janelle Monae attended the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party on Sunday night (February 26).

The singer and now-actress wore a black Alexandre Vauthier gown from the Fall 2016 Couture collection.

Let’s be honest: Janelle’s Elie Saab Couture gown from the ceremony was a pretty tough act to follow, but I like this choice as the fashion dessert to that main course. It plays along to the same theme–black, voluminous skirt, highly editorial–but in a much edgier fashion.

The punk elements of the mesh sleeves and upper bodice and the brackets on the sash are a bit of a departure for the often ladylike Janelle, and she is selling me hard on the look.

Keeping her hair styled the same throughout the night only further cements the idea that her two gowns were very much two chapters in the same fashion story.

Thank you, Janelle, once again, for making fashion so much more than just a dress and some jewels.

Christian Louboutin ‘Marchavekel’ heels and the same Jennifer Behr headpiece from earlier in the day completed her look.

Loved her Saab, but this one is good too! She rocks it well

I like the edge, although she really needed to leave that headband behind, change the shoes for something cooler, the fishnet neckline cheapens the look, and the look once again feels ott. The problem with Janelle is that one can certainly see that she is trying very enthusiastically, but she is not quite getting it.
With just a cool hairstyle, edgy footwear and at a more appropriate occasion, this look would’ve been right.

I like it much much better than her main event dress.
This is nice but really heavy for a after-party no?? Thats alot of fabric to be moving around a party atmosphere.

Janelle Monae is only 5 feet tall and yet she carries off looks that I used to think could only be worn well by taller woman. This is someone who knows how to wear clothes and make them work.

This woman…! Only 5 feet tall. What is this magic power she has to make me love what I don’t even like? Fashion pixie…..

Much prefer this to the Saab, and I love her hair styled this way.

When I saw this gown on the runway, I didn’t like it, I still look at it and still don’t like it, however, it looks great on Janelle and she might be the only person to pull it off.

Amazeballs!! I love this as much as I loved her Oscars Elie Saab. She was single handedly responsible in providing all the drama this year! ?

I’m not too fond of the dress but it looks so good on her !
    And I love her hairstyle.
