Cate Blanchett In Alexander McQueen – 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony

Cate Blanchett In Alexander McQueen - 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony

Cate Blanchett joined Rose Byrne at the 4th AACTA Awards Ceremony, held at The Star on Thursday (January 29) in Sydney, Australia.

The actress donned a rather unexpected look in this Alexander McQueen Spring 2015 Geisha pink satin, kimono-sleeve gown with contrast black paneling on the sleeves and the skirt.

The long and languid silhouette was in the spirit of the lingerie trend, with a slight costume flair.

The typically elegant Queen Cate was radiant with her black jade and diamond hoop Lorraine Schwartz earrings, rose-coloured lip and blonde waves.

Did you like her step outside of her more expected classic route?

no. I enjoy her taking a risk but it didn’t pay off

  2. Prudence January 31, 2015 at 00:46 #

this would be great to seduce your man but not on the rc.

  3. carla January 30, 2015 at 22:14 #

I LOVE Cate, but this nightgown is a NO for me

  4. Alex v January 30, 2015 at 21:50 #

I can’t believe this is McQueen. A big no from me.

  5. Michelle January 30, 2015 at 16:22 #

Apparently, she took a bus to the awards show so she could keep standing and not wrinkle the dress! So committed, this lady. Love her.

  6. kelly January 30, 2015 at 15:10 #

didn’t realize she had such a bombshell body! nice shape

  7. Azur January 30, 2015 at 14:41 #

Too pyjama for me, the fabric, the color, the sleeves, and the balck panel.

  8. kane January 30, 2015 at 11:55 #

I keep scrolling her head out of this. She pulls that gown off beautifully, but make up is harsh, hair limp and earrings ugly imho.

    • kane January 30, 2015 at 12:06 #

I actually don’t get much of a pyjama vibe from this. What makes the RHW looks so nighty-ish are the lace applications, the more revealing cut and what seems thinner material. This is Old Hollywood glamour. Just in colour.

  9. Pat January 30, 2015 at 10:59 #

I’d really like to hear what FC thinks about this look.

  10. Claire January 30, 2015 at 09:47 #

Love it!! So beautiful!! She looks super elegant as always!!!

  11. Noemi January 30, 2015 at 09:46 #

    I love it!! Those sleeves… j’adore.

  12. Charlotte January 30, 2015 at 09:30 #

    I don’t like the fabric.
In another fabric, I would have loved that.

  13. manja January 30, 2015 at 08:48 #

I am not crazy about the dress, but as usual she makes it work and looks beautiful while doing so

    • Fiona-Brasil January 30, 2015 at 09:34 #

Bad dresses happen to nice people. This is one of them.

  14. Sandy January 30, 2015 at 07:40 #

I’m getting a 60’s mistress feel. Not good at all.

  15. Valissa January 30, 2015 at 07:14 #

This would look horrible on most women but Cate looks fantastic! I don’t know how she does it but she makes even the most unflattering pieces look majestic! BDOTW worthy for me.

  16. lin January 30, 2015 at 06:33 #

Can’t say I liked all that sain on the telecast but it does look better in the photos. Agree about her hair and make up not being the best.

  17. sanette January 30, 2015 at 04:45 #

She looks fantastic in it surprisingly. I wish the make up and hair was better and more polished though.

  18. Kevinappears January 30, 2015 at 03:08 #

    Pajama.

  19. Bailey January 30, 2015 at 02:54 #

Ugly dress and the material looks awful

    • elena January 30, 2015 at 11:50 #

Agree… It looks like my silk nightie!!! ugly

  20. Salli January 30, 2015 at 02:37 #

She changed outfits during the evening – I think she donned the black/white version of this, but can’t be sure. It looked like a choir robe.

  21. Ramsay January 30, 2015 at 01:10 #

I’m sold – if it weren’t for Emma Stone’s Dior she’d win my vote for BDOTW

  22. Nadia January 30, 2015 at 00:07 #

I want to love it so bad. Right now, I’m on the fence.
Part of me is like: It’s great ! She pulls it off, as usual.”
    The other part: “Meh…”

  23. coupdegrazia January 29, 2015 at 23:49 #

I can’t believe she managed to get a shot in that without any wrinkles in the fabric! I can see how this one might elicit divided opinions, but I like it. Very french boudoir. And I’m a sucker for light pink + black. I’m sure she knew this was a risk, but she carried it wth the requiste laid-back confidence. I’d like to see more risk-taking and creative takes on dresses, across the board, so I’m definitely down with this!

  24. Jimmy January 29, 2015 at 23:20 #

I think she looks great! While it may be unexpected, I think it is unexpected in a nice way.

  25. Phoenix January 29, 2015 at 23:07 #

I totally love it. Its very unexpected but it works so well. I love the color against her skin, it makes her glow. She looks like a dame from a bygone era, but I don’t get a costumey vibe from it.

  26. Nat39 January 29, 2015 at 23:06 #

Spot-on assessment, Rachel – a cross between a costume and a nightgown. Cheap-looking, drab and below her standards, I agree.

    • Nat39 January 29, 2015 at 23:09 #

      ..it’s something rather Prada-ish.

      • cherrysoftness January 30, 2015 at 01:16 #

Prada-ish! That’s the best word to describe it.

    • Nat39 January 30, 2015 at 21:24 #

I see the post has been rewritten and “sugarcoated”. Too bad, I thought you were right.

      • CreoleLady February 1, 2015 at 14:39 #

Yes, I noticed the after-the-original-post sugarcoating too. And this is not the first time. I enjoy the different voices and opinions, by both the RCFA team members and commenters. I hope the sugarcoating is a sincere change of opinion and not due to pressure to conform, esp when it relates to a favorite on this blog.

  27. Yeliz January 29, 2015 at 23:00 #

She makes it work with her statuesque body, her posture and all, but I still don’t like the gown.

  28. Kimma January 29, 2015 at 22:56 #

Really? Rosie is wearing an actual nightdress and you love it. Very next post you’re criticising Cate for something that makes you think of a nightdress??

Is it her best? No. But as always I love Cate here.

    • Sleepless in Chicago January 30, 2015 at 02:19 #

Awful getup! She cannot save it – no one can!

  29. H January 29, 2015 at 22:51 #

    Statuesque and possessed, absolutely perfect!

  30. Marcel January 29, 2015 at 22:39 #

Oh my Lord, I do like it… It is like an old Hollywood diva coming back to life. Later she wore the black version of it as well .

  31. Kate January 29, 2015 at 22:38 #

I agree with the other commenters who said she made it work. I think it looks elegant and not over the top, but still unique enough to make an impact. THIS is how you do boudoir-chic. Take note, Rosie!

  32. Alex January 29, 2015 at 22:38 #

I agree that only Cate makes this great. She looks radiant and flawless.

  33. shontay January 29, 2015 at 22:28 #

The dress isn’t bad, but the fact that Cate is wearing it makes it great. Only her.

  34. Martin January 29, 2015 at 22:26 #

I actually LOVE this. I think it’s chic and elegant and dramatic and a perfectly unexpected Cate choice. In terms of the wrtie-up, I’m not really seeing the nightgown element and I actually think that it’s super-sophisticated. And that kimono sleeve is to die for, especially in that third shot. This is a BDOTW contender for me.

    • dee January 30, 2015 at 13:58 #

      I totally agree.

  35. GGG January 29, 2015 at 22:24 #

She can do no wrong in my eyes… She looks radiant. When is FC coming back?

    • DorianGray January 30, 2015 at 08:06 #

      +1
This blog feels so empty without FC.

  36. tuftufwang January 29, 2015 at 22:23 #

Not sure how she does it but I think it’s a wow for me. Very very very hard to pull off. It’s an outstanding look. But do not try this at home! LOL

  37. Sarah January 29, 2015 at 22:19 #

Satin is an awful fabric. I dont know how did she achieve to make it all night without a wrinkle in it.
Said that, no it’s not my favorite but on her it looks fantastic. I like it more from the sides, with the flowing sleeves. Gorgeous, even if a bit too like a Deitrich nightgown in a Von Stenberg film.

  38. Christine January 29, 2015 at 22:18 #

She made it work. No one else can, but her. Definitely not what I expected, but I like it.

    • pinksugar January 30, 2015 at 00:08 #

I agree. I don’t know very many women who could make satin look flattering AND sophisticated but Cate did it effortlessly.

  39. Britta January 29, 2015 at 22:14 #

I love it. Unexpected and welcome. Love that she wears something sexy. And it makes her look statuesque and diva-like!

  40. msd January 29, 2015 at 22:12 #

I wish she’d worn an Australian designer on the Australian film industry’s big night. know she has relationships with brands like McQueen and Armani but it was a real missed opportunity, especially when a lot of other women like Rose Byrne made a point of supporting a local designer.

    • Colleen January 30, 2015 at 07:09 #

I totally agree with you, we have some of the best designers around and we need A.listers like Cate to give them some exposure especially since she is an internationally recognized actress.

I don’t find this dress particularly alluring, but the name “McQueen” IMO is what gives it it’s attraction. Other than that, she and Deb were brilliant as hosts of the AACTA Awards.
