Joan Smalls CFDA Fashion Awards Bangs

2014 CFDA Fashion Awards - ArrivalsJoan Smalls took us all by surprise with her new ‘do at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards.

New York based hairstylist, Amoy Pitters, told us, “Joan was ready for a change. She didn’t want to appear too done up, but she was hoping for a fresh, easygoing look.”

The new bangs and carefree waves gave her exactly that. Amoy shared the step-by-step process of Joan’s big transformation.

After washing hair, Amoy Couture Hair Sapphire-Jojoba Leave-in Conditioner was mixed with one pump of the J.F. Lazartigue Serum with Shea Butter.

Mixing these two products will further moisturize strands and add shine to the finished look. Be sure to evenly distribute the blend to achieve a smooth consistency.

A blow dryer was used next to absorb any remaining moisture. The secret to achieving Joan’s bouncy waves is to make sure you do not blow dry your hair pin straight. Use a paddle brush in an upward motion on roots to create height.

Amoy separated Joan’s tresses into sections as she used a 1-inch barrel curling iron. Each wave was locked into place using Rene Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray. Hold the curler towards the end of the hair and be sure to twist each piece in the same direction to mimic the beach texture.

The bangs truly transformed Joan’s look. Amoy recommends that you avoid a blunt cut. Instead, ask your stylist to cut strands on an angle. An edgier cut will create natural movement and add dimension to the tousled waves.
