Lupita Nyong’o In Prada – 2014 Met Gala

Lupita Nyong’o In Prada - 2014 Met Gala

Lupita Nyong’o marched to the beat of her own (and Miuccia Prada’s) fashion drum as she hit the red carpet at the 2014 Met Gala, hosted on Monday (May 5) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

I couldn’t wait to see what the actress, style-setter and Miu Miu Spring 2014 campaign model would be wearing to the Met’s fashion extravaganza. She certainly left me speechless in her custom Prada concoction.

In one of the riskiest (to put it mildly), more excessively theatrical sartorial moves of the evening, Lupita paraded out the emerald-green netted dress, assembled with glass beads, crystals and chandelier drops and enhanced with cascades of feathers down the sides and at the bottom hem.

Worn over a brown slip dress, this design had precious little in common with the refined, classic looks in the Charles James exhibit. But it’s hard to deny that she is not rocking it like a pro.

Forget the gala, Lupita’s dress was the party, and the fun only continued with her matching emerald headband, military green suede sandals embellished with large stones and a green raso clutch, all by Prada.

Her hair even seemed to be highlighted with a shade of deep plum to embolden the look further—as if it needed it.

I am still waiting for the shock to wear off. This statement will definitely go down in Met Ball history. What do you make of it?

Lupita went from Top of the Tops to rock bottom.
Congratulations to Miuccia who made one of the most beautiful and best dressed woman out there to look absolutely ridiculous.

  2. Anna May 6, 2014 at 10:00 #

For the first time Lupita looks god awful, epic fail!

  3. CreoleLady May 6, 2014 at 09:42 #

My initial reactions was “what?!!!” and “wow!”. This has Mardi Gras written all over it. And I love Mardi Gras. The shoes are incredible. Hot bod. Dislike the headband but love the rest — for Mardi Gras. But not necessarily for the Met gala.

  4. Lee Ann May 6, 2014 at 09:40 #

This is very Josephine Baker but I give it a thumbs down

  5. the dame May 6, 2014 at 09:28 #

I can’t understand why she is wearing that headband!? That dress is enough, with the headband and shoes, it’s a mess! And her hair…

  6. Noemi May 6, 2014 at 09:17 #

This will probably stay in history of the Gala as one of the worst look, ever. I know most everybody is crazy about her, but what if somebody else had worn this? Sorry, just because it’s her it doesn’t mean that she always does right. Plus, it was about the incredibly classy couture by Charles James, the dress code wasn’t “ethno and tribal”. As I dislike those who, last year, worn romantic gowns for the punk theme, I cannot like this.

  7. Alina May 6, 2014 at 09:11 #

    Her worst look ever.

  8. TL May 6, 2014 at 09:08 #

She looks like she’s out of place. Big NO, it’s a mess.

  9. V May 6, 2014 at 09:04 #

    This is kind of hideous!

  10. dedel May 6, 2014 at 08:54 #

No way ! She looks like Peter Pan

  11. Yeliz May 6, 2014 at 08:52 #

This is such a disappointing look. I was expecting her to wow me. What in the world is this?! Just.. no.

  12. Charlotte May 6, 2014 at 08:35 #

Worst dressed of the year !
    Ridiculous.

  13. amy May 6, 2014 at 08:28 #

not my favorite, too much going on

  14. Tatiana May 6, 2014 at 08:06 #

This is just tragic and horrible. Tonight has been about extremes, from being totally bland and boring to absolutely ridiculous and tasteless (with few exceptions). Where is Cate Blanchett with her Lacroix Couture or Nicole Kidman in Valentino when you need them? Lord, this Gala has been a hot mess.

  15. kane May 6, 2014 at 07:59 #

Most people played it fairly safe as this year’s theme allowed them to do. Karolina’s gown will end up as my BDOTW, M & Y probably, but in terms of sticking to theme (mooore or less) but adding the Met Gala twist to it, Lupita totally nailed it.

    • Kate May 6, 2014 at 15:42 #

I don’t think this is “sticking to the theme”. No.

    • Alexandra May 6, 2014 at 16:45 #

Only if the theme was “crazy aerobics”

  16. Martina May 6, 2014 at 07:34 #

I guess, that she will be the best and the worst dressed of the year!

  17. Alex V May 6, 2014 at 06:59 #

She’s the only person in the world who can win Best Dressed of the Year & Worst Outfit of the year

  18. Dhppy May 6, 2014 at 06:25 #

It looks like someone cast the most glamorous net imaginable off their yacht and caught People’s Most Beautiful Woman. I’m digging the shoes though.

  19. lamodesedemodelestylejamais May 6, 2014 at 06:10 #

    Josephine Baker meets disco…
Lupita got the wrong memo..it seems she is dressed up for a costume party (when one piles on crazy accessories to overload/caricature a look).
Let’s pretend this has never happened.

  20. friend of cats May 6, 2014 at 05:26 #

I love it and think she should get best dressed. This lady can pull off any style in any color anywhere. She’s also completely original and everytime it seems she couldn’t do anything more original, she suprises us yet again.

  21. melinda + Daily May 6, 2014 at 05:11 #

This outfit is really on some WTF mess. Lupita gurl: Prada made you look the plum fool.

  22. ladyoflettuce May 6, 2014 at 05:09 #

    YES YES
    Referencces Joshephine Baker. Awesome.

    • Stel May 6, 2014 at 17:27 #

Exactly my thought!! This is a gala about fashion, it’s not a premiere or awards.. I thik she’s one of the best dressed of the night with such a refreshing and modern air! I love love LOVE IT! She is a 20s girl in Paris! <3

  23. Prudence May 6, 2014 at 04:53 #

THIS ALMOST BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. LUPITA, YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME.

  24. Regina May 6, 2014 at 04:22 #

She looks like a crazy version of Josephine Baker. No. Just NO.

  25. cherrysoftness May 6, 2014 at 04:21 #

I can accept the dress and daring, as fun. But the headband and eye shadow combo creating an 80’s aerobics instructor look is the worst offender for me – it’s what pushes it to bizarr-o. Is that pink and purple on her eye? Why? WHY?

  26. Amanda May 6, 2014 at 04:18 #

Sad and ridiculous. What on earth was she thinking? So so awful.

  27. L May 6, 2014 at 04:14 #

She should have just worn the brown slip. I feel like she would have looked 1000 times better. She looks like she is wearing the remains of a Kermit the frog Lady Gaga costume.

  28. Alex V May 6, 2014 at 04:03 #

    Omg ewww!

  29. brat May 6, 2014 at 04:01 #

I never thought Lupita would make my worst-dressed list

  30. Carol May 6, 2014 at 03:59 #

Now that my tears of sadness have dried I am trying to see how I would rectify such a situation.
Perhaps if the slip dress was a slim cut jumpsuit instead and the shoes less embellished, a neutral bag?
It happens to everybody. There are some of my faves who do not look as good as they normally do on the carpet tonight.
    The only way is up.

  31. Courtney Klein May 6, 2014 at 03:48 #

I’m so mortified I need to calm down.

  32. Alexandra May 6, 2014 at 03:46 #

She looks like a crazy woman invaded the red carpet…NOT GOOD

  33. Tati M May 6, 2014 at 03:44 #

The worst dressed of the night

  34. Nat39 May 6, 2014 at 03:15 #

Confusing, looks like a cheap dancer’s getup. What a let down. Easily one of the worst of the night.

  35. effieee May 6, 2014 at 02:57 #

I feel like this would’ve been the perfect look for the Met Gala… two years ago.

This is definitely a questionable look; the biggest issues being the headband and the too-visible slip.

  36. Leigh May 6, 2014 at 02:56 #

Undecided. From some angles (from the side) it looks all right, but when photographed front on I’m not a fan.

  37. Rachel May 6, 2014 at 02:52 #

To go against the grain on the response, I say ditch the headband and the bracelet and it is a HELL-YEAH. The headband distracts from the beauty of her face, especially since there is such loud detailing on the gown itself. The bright silver does not work with the brown. Another part of what I like about this gown is the way it plays with “nudeness” and the deepness of her black skin.
I think small amendments to the accessories would reduce the “costume” quality of her presentation and push the fashion more forward.

Of course, I applaud her daringness.

  38. KC May 6, 2014 at 02:51 #

    NO! x 1,000,000

  39. Renata May 6, 2014 at 02:50 #

This is just not good. So sad to watch her make such a big fashion mistake! I’ll just try and erase that from my memory and pretend it never happened.

  40. Rachel May 6, 2014 at 02:49 #

Just to go against the flow here, I’d say lose the headband and the silver bracelet and it’s a HELL-YEAH. The headband distracts from her face, especially since there is such loud detailing on the gown itself. The bright silver accessories don’t quite work with the brown. To parrot others, I too applaud her stance, her party, her daringness.

    • Evil Britta May 6, 2014 at 05:03 #

I agree, except possibly only to the extent of “yeah” rather than ‘HELL-YEAH’.

      • Jess2 May 7, 2014 at 13:19 #

        +1

  41. Joy May 6, 2014 at 02:47 #

Good Lord, this is the biggest let down. Why in the world would she wear this? I keep looking at the pictures trying to figure out why. The only positive thing I can come up with is it sort of reminds me of Josephine Baker? And she was pretty cool.

  42. Carrie May 6, 2014 at 02:47 #

As much as I love her, this just leaves me confused.

  43. Milla B. May 6, 2014 at 02:46 #

    I’m in shock…
    *no words*

  44. CTgirl May 6, 2014 at 02:44 #

Prada is going for shock value rather than actual design and that is a pity. Horrible look that is a cornucopia of green sparkling junk.

  45. jimmy May 6, 2014 at 02:43 #

I generally applaud people for taking a risk and having fun with fashion and I think she has been incredibly impressive on the red carpet but sadly this is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. I guess everything can’t be a homerun.

    • Lashae May 6, 2014 at 06:26 #

    • Nat May 6, 2014 at 14:10 #

      +3. WTH happened?

  46. Rene May 6, 2014 at 02:43 #

    No, just no.

  47. Alex May 6, 2014 at 02:42 #

    Hell no

    • ayatlaw May 8, 2014 at 17:16 #

+1 I love Lupita but um no…is her hair purple? Too much is going on; surely any mirror could have told her this.

  48. Olivia May 6, 2014 at 02:42 #

I think I kind of love it… It’s so fun and original for theme of this year, I don’t even mind her purple hair.

  49. Bec May 6, 2014 at 02:41 #

She looks like she is having a blast, but unfortunately for me, this is a risk that didn’t pay off.

Brown and green isn’t the most attractive combo of colours in a dress! If the slip had have been green also I might have liked it more.

  50. Christine May 6, 2014 at 02:40 #

Love her but sadly, this is a no go. I am all about risk taking but this is not risk taking. This is awful.

Love her confidence though to wear this with a smile.
