Kate Mara In Valentino Couture – 2014 Met Gala

"Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala - Arrivals

Kate Mara makes a bold choice on the red carpet of the 2014 Met Gala on Monday (May 5) in New York City.

The actress wore a uniquely printed Valentino Couture Spring 2014 gown with a sheer neckline and sleeves.

I am drawn in by this ensemble, but at closer look I can’t say that I love it. I always appreciate a risk, but this one doesn’t quite do it for me. The silhouette of the dress is stunning, but the combination of texture, pattern and color prevent me from embracing it.

There is no doubt that the gown is a work of art. The detail is breathtaking and the cape on the back is a very cool addition.

Although I don’t love the color, I do like how Mara’s tousled platinum blonde waves and shimmery makeup look with it. I wish I wasn’t so torn about this look. How do you feel about it?

Such a beautiful dress paired with simple styling. Modern!

Loving the capes at the event! I really like this, I think her styling is particularly good. I think it would have been easy for Kate to be overwhelmed by such a dress but I think she manages just fine.

I agree! She looks so gorgeous. I think the color of the dress looks great on her and goes so well with her hair.

    I’m thinking “elegant draperies”.

Agreed. The pattern is just ugly.

To me this is an interesting fabric but not one that can shine on a red carpet. The subtle browns and greens complement her coloring but the print looks busy and a bit muddy photographed in this setting (imo).

    I absolutely love it !

This is my favourite Kate Mara red carpet look. I generally dislike her red carpet style but I love Valentino, I love this gown and I love how she styled it. Thumbs up from me!

I can’t help thinking this would really pop if there was a black seam sewn around the top edge of the bodice, I want to draw it on!

This has to be one of her best looks ever. She looks fantastic.

A Valentino gown is a pure pleasure to behold. Lovely. Gorgeous. One of the few goodies of the night.

Love! It’s lush and romantic, and totally on point for this event.

This, for me, is PERFECTION. I love absolutely everything about it, especially the colour against her skin. And I think the approach to her hair and make-up add a modern twist to the romantic glamour.

I usually love long sheer sleves + ornate dress but this one looks a little too mossy to me.

It’s a pretty dress and it has many good elements but something prevents me from liking this look.

The color is not appealing and it has a little too much “Grandma’s drapes” look to it. Also her hair is awful. Try a brush next time. I do not see what the appeal to this woman is.

honestly, my first reaction here was an audible wow. the more i see it though, it’s not about the dress or styling in particular, but she’s just carrying it all so well. je ne sais quoi.
