Solange Knowles is living her life out loud and in technicolour for an editorial for shot by Julia Noni for Harper’s Bazaar US.
Fashion editor Joanna Hillman tapped into the star’s love for colour in her editorial, which sees Solange wearing Chanel with a pair of Jeremy Scott by Linda Farrow sunnies that I have to own, as well as Moschino, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren.
Solange is a successful recording artist with her own label, an art director, and a creative consultant for Puma, all while becoming a fashion icon with a style all of her own.
You can call her a tastemaker, but in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar she shared how she hasn’t completely come to terms with being labelled as such, saying ”I’ve always had an annoying relationship with the term ‘tastemaker,’ but it’s been a defining part of my career for the past couple of years.”
Solange talked to the magazine about her journey in the music industry, dating losers and divorce. Here are some extracts. You can read the rest over at HarpersBazaar.com.
On her personal style: “You can pull images of me from seven to 14 years ago and I was absolutely nuts. I have always been drawn to interesting pieces and colours, but I didn’t quite know how to limit myself and make those statement pieces work. I had to stabilize our lives and stay in one place. It sounds silly, I know, but having space for my clothes made a huge difference. I was able to get organized, free myself of clutter, and develop a style that felt like me.”
On following in Beyonce’s footsteps: “My parents constantly tried to talk me out of being an artist. They had gone through the whole journey with my sister and just wanted me to have a normal teenage life.”
On her love life: “Luckily, I dated all of the losers ages ago. My love life has been stable for a while,” she says, adding wryly “It’s a fucked-up thing—without conflict it’s a lot harder to write interesting songs.”
