Essence Magazine’s 5th Annual Black Women In Music Event

Essence Magazine's 5th Annual Black Women In Music Event

The 5th annual Essence Black Women In Music event took place at 1 OAK on Wednesday (January 22) in West Hollywood, California.

Leona Lewis: I haven’t always been a fan of Leona’s style, but here she showcases her curves wearing a gorgeous cobalt-blue one-shoulder frock styled with metallic accessories to complement her waistband.

Michelle Williams: The singer opted for a black-and-white BCBG ‘Patrycia’ jumpsuit featuring a mandarin collar from the Fall 2013 collection. While I love the jumpsuit, the pants are way too long for her.

Emeli Sandé: The British singer added some sparkle to the proceedings wearing a Paule Ka navy neoprene three-quarter-sleeve dress with shell-and-beaded embellishments styled with a sexy pair of lightly embellished blue sandals.

DJ Kiss: Wearing her go-to designer, the DJ wore a Peter Pilotto ‘Corrine’ 3D-effect digital print dress with directional additions of fluted cap sleeves and the curved hem which she styled with all black accessories. Only her fuchsia lip was in danger of upstaging this frock.

Really glad to see Leona back on this site. I love her music, but her style isn’t that great. Hope she keeps it up!

    Not liking any of these.

Michelle for me, if any. I find the print of DJ’s dress interesting, but feel it needed a different cut, especially around the neckline.

Emeli looks the best here, IMO.

I like these looks. Not a fan of the baggy pants look, but even so I think Michelle’s simple styling works.

Thank God Leona ditched the corset belts! She looks great here, though an ankle-strap shoe probably wasn’t her best choice.
Michelle looks chic, but the pants do seem a bit too long.
Emeli’s dress is really pretty up close. She styled this well, I love the shoes.
DJ Kiss is pulling off a difficult dress, IMO. But I do think the fuchsia lip was too much and took away from the dress.

I love DJ Kiss’ lipstick, but think I would like her dress better on a curvier body, it’s not her most flattering look. I like Michelle’s sporty look, though the pants are too long.
