Jessica Chastain for Vogue US December 2013

Two-time Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain covers the December 2013 issue of American Vogue, which is, surprisingly, her first cover for the mag.

Annie Leibovitz captures Jessica as she recreates classic paintings wearing Alexander Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and Alexander McQueen. Even the cover is art-inspired as Jessica wears a yellow Theory by Theyskens gown evoking the image of Frederic Leighton’s famous ‘Flaming June’ painting.

She talks to Vogue about her life and how she’s very shy, and her best friend Jess Weixler talks about the star’s strong work ethic.

You can read some extracts below or go to Vogue.com. The December issue hits newsstands November 19.

On her life: “My life has gone, you know, a little wonderful and crazy.”

On her confidence: “I did not feel like a beautiful woman that people would kill each other for. Jessica – who I am in my personal life – I’m very shy, I feel very awkward, I don’t feel like a femme fatale at all.”

Jess Weixler, her best friend from Juilliard, on young Jessica: “She’s always been unbelievably focused. It used to drive the guys crazy. ‘Why won’t Jessica stay up late?’ There were a few times when I was like: I can’t believe she’s waking up on a Saturday to go to an extra class.”

I love this whole spread. I love how it’s leaning way more artistic than fashion. Jessica is flawless in each picture, and the cover is amazing.

I second Joy on the art take to the spread. They feel like paintings, which works particularly nicely in the Pre-Raphaelite inspired one.

Agree with Joy and kane, a redhead through and for the ages (Elizabethan through modern day). Love the results.

Beautifully captured and one of the finest spreads I’ve ever come across. Jessica looks gorgeous on the cover, especially.

    Wonderful cover

I don’t like her position on the cover. Her head looks awkward. I like the pictures with the blue dress and the silver dress and that’s it. She is a beautiful woman and I think some of these photos could have been better.

I think Jessica did a wonderful job portraying the ladies in the paintings. She’s really got the classic vibe. Beautiful cover, I love it.

I actually really dislike this shoot – not for Jessica – but for what Annie has done to her. She’s animated her in a way that, IMO, has taken away her natural beauty.

Annie used to such a great photographer, but lately she just removes any liveliness from her targets. For Vogue, I expected something a lot more.

I really do not care for this cover ( as usual when it comes to vogue ) I do not like the awkward position in which she is laying and the orange eyeshadow on a red head is puzzling. The spread is beautiful but I do not like how there is no life in her and the picture lose all appeal. yet another vogue I wont be purchasing.
