Victoria Beckham invited digital journalists to have a private viewing of her Spring 2014 Victoria Beckham and Victoria, Victoria Beckham collections, which was hosted at the British Embassy in Paris, France on Friday.
Vogue.co.uk, WWD, Susie Bubble, Rumi from Fashion Toast and myself were just a few of those invited. It was almost like getting the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory.
The collections, including the commercial pieces, were displayed around two rooms in the luxurious venue, which we browsed prior to Victoria’s arrival while drinks and canapés were served.
When the lady of the hour arrived I suddenly became really nervous, which is common around celebs, but I need not have been so shy because, despite what you may believe, Victoria is very approachable and engaging and was genuinely interested in our publications; her passion and excitement for fashion was very evident.
The first question I asked her was about the Victoria, Victoria Beckham Spring 2014 dress which received such mixed comments from you guys, and she said that the lavender silk-cloque dress – which was developed in-house – was her favourite from that collection. After not having much sleep following the show and a round of press appointments, she loved how comfortable the dress felt.
On her Victoria, Victoria Beckham Spring 2014 dress: “It is something very different for me. I was excited to wear it, turned up to work, didn’t really think much about it, should have paid a bit more attention and done my hair, but I didn’t. It’s great to wear fitted clothes, but it’s not all about fitted clothes. I felt very sexy wearing that dress and it was really quite big. I like how it feels quite romantic; I felt very free”.
On the Victoria Beckham woman, and who wears her dresses: “I love women. We really need to support each other and stick together. I went to a wedding in LA the other day and three women were wearing my dresses and that is very exciting. I love how women feel sexy, beautiful, empowered. Of course it is exciting to see celebrities on the red carpet but any women are great. The fact that they have chosen to wear me is a big deal. I am not complacent about it”.
On her online presence: “I can reach my customers quicker (reference to Twitter). My website is doing phenomenally well. What I love about that is that I do a lot of the filming myself and create a lot of the content myself and people can see the brand through my eyes. I am about to start selling ready-to-wear online as well. I didn’t want to do it right at the beginning because I really wanted to understand my customer before I could make my edit of ready-to-wear with all the other collections”.
On the pressures of designing: “I’m not trying to compete with anyone else out there; I’m just trying to compete with myself from the season before. I feel really content, proud, happy and fired up and ready to go for my next collection”.
On her next steps: “I landed back on Friday after the show; my kids were at school, so I went to the studio and started working on the pre-collection. For me, I have a lot of big dreams; there is a lot I still want to do and I’m very hands on with every element of my business, and I want to do more at the right time and not rush anything, take baby steps to create something which hopefully will be around for a long time, and to create something very important fashion-wise. It’s not just about selling loads of clothes, which the collection happens to be selling phenomenally well; I want to be relevant every season fashion-wise, not just clothes: the hair, the makeup, the venue”.
On expanding her collection to shoes: “I would love to, when the time is right. But at the moment I have my hands full with the collections, which are growing so quickly sell-through is phenomenal. We are adding new retail partners each season. I’ve just started doing pre-collection as well, which has doubled the workload, so when the time is right, for sure”.
