VMAs Men1

Leave it to last night’s 2013 MTV Video Music Awards to bring out the unexpected, with an eclectic mix of sartorial sass, surprisingly understated appeal and sheer shock factor. But, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the men’s looks were nearly as colourful as the daring drama queens themselves.

Darren Criss: Clad in an aubergine Versace one-button peak lapel suit, the ‘Glee’ cutie completed his look with a black-and-white Versace pocket square, a black button-down shirt and contrasting dark-blue tie, not to mention Christian Louboutin ‘Bruno Orlato Glitter’ flat loafers. Any guy who boldly goes for glitter and eggplant gets my vote.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Adding a touch of the unexpected to his light heather-grey Prada suit, the actor wore a cerulean-blue shirt. A thin black tie and black brogues finished out the look.

Miles Teller: ‘The Spectacular’ Now star made a more casual entrance with his Second Sunday grey shirt and Andrew Marc black jeans, amped up with an oxblood Giorgio Armani jacket.

Will Smith: Like his cool kids, Willow Smith and Jaden Smith, the handsome actor-dad worked a chill look. The dark blazer, shirt and pants may have been the most monochromatic man-entrance, but the lack of colour didn’t compromise the effect.

Adam Lambert: The style-forward, guyliner-loving singer strutted out a shimmering Lanvin tux, worn over a silvery half-unbuttoned shirt. The suit’s swirling micro-print added some serious texture and shine to this look, which was grounded with chunky, clunky creeper shoes. They don’t call him Glambert for nothing.

Macklemore: The ‘Thrift Shop’ rapper, who was joined on the red carpet by his coral-and-purple-clad fiancée Tricia Davis, also stood out in a seafoam-green Logan Neitzel suit, accented with shades of platinum—from his silver tie to those charcoal slippers and the grey striped fur he through over his shoulders.

2 Chainz: The hip-hop artist lived up to his name with his piles of gold chains, cuffs and a door-knocker pendant around his neck. His extravagant Versace gold scroll-print ensemble was further taken into man-rapper territory by an oversized white T-shirt and a backwards baseball cap. Golden boy or too garish?

Future: Even with an interesting patchwork Alexander McQueen suit and nerd-cool glasses, the rapper couldn’t come close to outdoing his Givenchy-gorgeous girlfriend, Ciara.

Jared Leto: Never one to shy away from the weird and wacky, the long-haired entertainer served up some Saint Laurent rocker-edge in his tightly zippered black-and-white leather biker pants. Not content to leave good enough alone, he added a white tee, black leather jacket and tied another shirt around his waist, which created a quirky tail-like effect.
