Joan Smalls In Helmut Lang & Altuzarra – ‘Lovelace’ New York Premiere

Joan Smalls In Helmut Lang & Altuzarra - 'Lovelace' New York Premiere

Like Naya Rivera, Joan Smalls was taking the crop-top trend to the next level yesterday evening while attending the New York screening of ‘Lovelace’.

The stunning model must have had jaws dropping in her wake as she wore a black Helmut Lang asymmetrical bra top with a colourful Altuzarra pali-print high-waisted skirt styled with a black Givenchy envelope clutch and Tom Ford triple-buckle sandals.

A perfect advert for all those brands if I ever saw one.

Soft curls and neutral makeup completed her look.

I am going to stick both this and the picture of Naya by my computer, so the next time I want to blow off a Bikram Yoga class, this will give me inspiration.

Most of you said Naya’s look was trashy, so what do you think about this look?

You can buy Joan’s Helmut Lng bra top from Helmut Lang, Net-A-Porter.com, Forward by Elyse Walker and Saks.com

THIS is how you rock the crop-top trend!

Everything from the hair to the shoes is on point. Well done Joan, you need to teach these little starlets how to rock a crop top and not look like you belong on a street corner. BDOTW contender imo.

This ensemble strikes me as too daytimey and casual for an evening affair in New York, but I would not call it trashy. She’s baring her midriff but not also wearing a plunging neckline, tight skirt, and flashy gold heels. You might say it’s too “beachy,” but she doesn’t look the least bit like a streetwalker.

I really like the skirt and the top but not together. I think the top would be more dramatic with a plain pencil skirt…. and the skirt should be allowed to speak for itself with a simpler top. (NOT the runway top, please!, which doesn’t go at all!) In any case, I think she looks rather nice.

Well, New York premieres are usually casual, so I think this look is just right.

Don’t like the top. Love the midriff baron trend however. She dressed like some unsophisticated and desperate 24 yr old vying for attention

    I prefer Naya’s look.

She looks amazing but I think that mere mortals should not even attempt to pull that look off.

Hot body. She looks alright. crop tops not my cup of tea

  10. mattison July 31, 2013 at 22:01 #

Perfect advert indeed! I think she pulls this off because of her attitude, her killer body, and the context of the event (afterall, it’s a pornstar biopic, not a daytime talkshow or a black tie awards show). Well done!

This is a fine crop top ensemble. Naya Rivera’s problem was that she couldn’t stop at the high crop, she had to throw side boob and a leather skirt into the mix.

She looks amazing, there’s no denying that. I guess it’s more the idea of a tiny bikini-like top that really pushes my modesty button. But I love the skirt, the accessories, hair and makeup.

This looks really good. A highwaisted no belly button bearing, knee length pencil, which seems like a classic kindve skirt but then its a modern pattern, with the asymetrical crop top, mad props!

I’ll give her a pass because of the attitude and the combination she made with this awesome skirt+shoes. I don’t really like that top, but she wears it nicely.

I like it. Escpecially because so many different brands have been put together and it works. This is dressin, not copying something out of a lookbook.
