Cate Blanchett In Balenciaga.Edition – ‘Blue Jasmine’ New York Premiere

Cate Blanchett In Balenciaga Edition - 'Blue Jasmine' New York Premiere

Following her guest appearance on Letterman earlier in the evening, Cate Blanchett stunned again while attending the New York premiere of Woody Allen’s ‘Blue Jasmine’ held at the Museum of Modern Art, which, frankly, is where her stunning dress belongs.

She wore a Balenciaga.Edition ensemble consisting of a blush-pink gazar cape and an embroidered dress with floral appliqués.

The pictures of Cate without the cape are beautiful, but the cape leaves me breathless, taking this look into fashion-forward – and, in this case, regal – territory.

Nude Balenciaga pumps and Van Cleef + Arples jewels accessorized her look, with a sophisticated updo and rosy cheeks providing the finishing touches.

I don’t think I need to ask if you think this is BDOTW worthy. Do I?

Cate, at her very best (as I think she is here), is untouchable. It is almost as though she is on another planet to everyone else. Flawless. BDOTW, and probably a strong contender for BDOTY as well for me.

I totally agree–and it looks so effortless. She disappears for months and then shows up nonchalantly wearing something totally exquisite like this.

    • Bas July 24, 2013 at 21:00 #

      +2. Perfect

  2. Denise July 23, 2013 at 12:29 #

I like the dress, soft and feminine, her flawless makeup but not the cape.

  3. Charlotte July 23, 2013 at 12:30 #

Her make up is perfect ! She is so beautiful.
I love the cape and the color works so weel on her but i don’t really like the floral appliqués. I wish the floral appliqué was more subtil and as short as the skirt.

  4. Alina July 23, 2013 at 12:31 #

    All hail the Queen.

Well, on anybody else I would’ve quite dislike the cape, but Cate works the hell out of it. She looks so very stunning and regal with and without the cape. Love the hair, makeup and jewelry. BDOTW worthy, no doubt.

  6. Pablo July 23, 2013 at 12:36 #

Once again, we are not worthy. As you say, the cape takes this to another level. It’s simply wonderful!

  7. Marko_M July 23, 2013 at 12:37 #

    OMG perfection!! No words.

  8. Christine July 23, 2013 at 12:38 #

Yassssssss!!!! I was waiting on this post! I cried! I got the chills when seeing this. This is fashion that I crave. She is my my best dressed of the week. Hands down! She looks breathtaking. All hail Cate the Great!

Girl I told you!!!!! Just omg!!! Never been this excited in a long while lol.

    • Christine July 23, 2013 at 14:39 #

FC, did you get the chills like I did? I am still in a trance. LOL

      • Catherine Kallon July 23, 2013 at 17:03 #

        very much so :)

    • KatieKate July 23, 2013 at 23:34 #

I don’t think I can top that, so I will just say’ “Ditto”. :-)

      • KatieKate July 23, 2013 at 23:35 #

But I do have to mention how I adore her jewelry! Aahhhh, so gorge, and complement the dress perfectly.

        • Fiona - Perth July 23, 2013 at 23:51 #

Agree 100% – trust Cate to choose such unusual, vintage-looking and totally ethereal jewels to go with such an amazing dress. I agree with the comment earlier that we don’t see her for a while and then she swans in so effortlessly and blows us away – love it!

  9. Christine July 23, 2013 at 12:39 #

I think i just found my first candidate for BDOTY. Chills! Chills! So beautiful!!!

  10. Andrea July 23, 2013 at 12:47 #

    Cate is cool.

  11. Valissa July 23, 2013 at 12:50 #

Cate Blanchett is pure perfection. I can’t think of any celebrity that can pull this off…she is the only one! And she looks amazing!!

    • chryssa July 23, 2013 at 14:10 #

  12. Lee Ann July 23, 2013 at 12:57 #

I absolutely love this -my only niggle- and a very small only- is I would have preferred shoes a bit less matchy.

  13. Anne July 23, 2013 at 13:09 #

I am fully prepared to be the minority here. The color is lovely on her, but I don’t like this ensemble at all. I think it’s very mother-of-the-bride (especially with the shoes), and the hairstyle does nothing to help make this more youthful. It’s just not my cup of tea.

    • Jen July 23, 2013 at 14:01 #

      I agree with you completely.

    • Jolene July 23, 2013 at 15:00 #

Mother of the bride ?? Only if the mother was b*tch enough to upstage her own daughter at the wedding. I respect your opinion, of course, but this dress is pure art. It goes beyond any wedding dress.

    • Nat39 July 23, 2013 at 22:27 #

I also think that the ensemble is awful. I’m not seeing a regal artistic creation here, more like not a very successful attempt at it. The mumsy pumps aren’t helping. I wonder what the response to this look would’ve been had it not been Cate the Great wearing it.

    • Lashae July 24, 2013 at 00:57 #

I’m in agreement with you on everything.

      • Alicat July 24, 2013 at 05:03 #

I admire her courage to be so fashion forward, and usually she nails it. For me, this is not one of those occasions. I agree that the colour and style of the dress is ageing and shouts mother of the bride. The cape kills the look stone dead. It hangs awkwardly and the way it projects at the front makes her look like she has a phantom pregnancy. On a positive note, I love her soft hair and makeup.

        • Denise July 24, 2013 at 07:29 #

+1 on the “phantom pregnancy”. I felt so alone when I said I didn’t like the cape… She looks beautiful but I don’t see the greatness and I sure didn’t have any chills.

        • Pene July 24, 2013 at 14:10 #

          minority we are

    • Ali July 24, 2013 at 16:50 #

Its awful. Sorry. I know most love it but I am baffled as to why? Sometimes fashion forward is another way of saying fashion fail.

      • Ayesha July 25, 2013 at 16:11 #

        i don’t think it’s awful but i don’t get all this love…just a good look…that’s all.

  14. TeuntjeVDW July 23, 2013 at 13:11 #

    This is perfection! I’m speechless!

  15. CreoleLady July 23, 2013 at 13:13 #

Once again, her footwear disappoints. I’m teetering between loving and loathing. Loving because I do think she is one of the few with the combination of class, edge and fabulosity to carry off this look. But like Anne I am seeing matchy-matchy mother-of-the-bride in part because of the shoes.

  16. Cass July 23, 2013 at 13:21 #

    Perfection.

  17. Lalaine July 23, 2013 at 13:26 #

    Finally, a Cate-worthy outfit. Stunning.

  18. kane July 23, 2013 at 13:37 #

Loving me some cape as I do, I wouldn’t have minded for this to fall just a tad flatter in front. Also not crazy about the shoes. But while feeling slightly ambiguous, I’m still falling on the side of loving this. She pulls it off amazingly.

    • Moxie July 23, 2013 at 15:18 #

Exactly. I might have liked this look if the cape weren’t sticking out in front making Cate look nine months pregnant.

  19. Markness July 23, 2013 at 13:42 #

Ugh! PERFECTION! She’s on my BDOTY for sure. This is only something Cate Blanchett can wear and make it look like it’s nothing for her. She is a fashion forward girl. Loves it!

  20. H July 23, 2013 at 14:14 #

I have never seen anything like this, ever, and the perfect person to wear this is Cate, insanely gorgeous!!

  21. Noemi July 23, 2013 at 14:19 #

Wow, with the cape it’s edgy, without is very delicate and feminine. Maybe she’s the only one who can pull this off.

  22. Susan July 23, 2013 at 14:56 #

“Stuns” the most overused word in 2013. This outfit does not look all that well made, does it? Would anyone really want to buy it? I just don’t see it as fashion forward. I see it as throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. Unfortunately the monk’s hood and wispy flowers stuck.

    • Jolene July 23, 2013 at 15:02 #

I would, if I could afford. It looks very well made to me.

  23. dee July 23, 2013 at 15:06 #

I don’t like the cape. I like this better without it. The shoes could have been better too.

  24. Jolene July 23, 2013 at 15:12 #

The cape adds a whole new dimension to the dress. It is an absolutely stunning outfit.

  25. Moxie July 23, 2013 at 15:16 #

I don’t like the cape, it takes the look into Maternity wear for me.

  26. TeaAtTwo July 23, 2013 at 15:22 #

Sometimes I don’t think Cate is real. This is amazing.

  27. Petra July 23, 2013 at 15:23 #

THIS IS ART. I can not put into words how much i LOVE THIS!

  28. Hannah July 23, 2013 at 15:40 #

She is total perfection. she had a frankly disappointing couple of months and this look is more than worth the wait. Honestly, she makes every other person and look just so blah in comparison, she has created a league of her own. I don’t even remember my shortlist for BDOTY so far because she’s blown me away so much.

  29. Manuel July 23, 2013 at 15:45 #

    W O W!

  30. John July 23, 2013 at 16:09 #

I can’t get over how much I love this look, she is legit perfection.

  31. michaboa July 23, 2013 at 16:27 #

she looks beautiful, but I hate the shoes. I would have preferred a sandal.

  32. Xiomalys Crespo July 23, 2013 at 16:34 #

Honestly, I only like this because she’s the only one that could pull it off with such aplomb.

  33. emsti July 23, 2013 at 18:01 #

Ladies, this is not fashion, this is art.

  34. Katie July 23, 2013 at 18:08 #

I don’t think the cape is a good addition to the outfit, I think the dress is delicate and beautiful but the cape is unflattering. Despite this, she still looks stunning!

  35. ash July 23, 2013 at 18:16 #

OMG. I. Am. Not. Worthy. Definitely the front runner for my BDOTY. I am in love, once again.

  36. claire July 23, 2013 at 19:54 #

just a few weeks ago, i was drooling over this dress at the “paris haute couture” exhibit and now it’s on the red carpet ! it’s such a beautiful dress. i love the cape, it adds so much to the look

    • KatieKate July 23, 2013 at 23:39 #

So see, FC, it does belong in a museum, just as you said.

  37. Marybeth July 23, 2013 at 21:07 #

Without the cape the dress is very pretty, even if Cate’s hair and shoes do give it a bit of a mother-of-the-bride look.
With the cape it is far more interesting — not especially flattering, but “cool.” I don’t love it but, on confident Cate at least, I rather like it.

  38. Nat39 July 23, 2013 at 22:04 #

I think this design is trying to be something cool and original but fails miserably, it’s certainly different but not in a good way, I can’t find a single thing to like about this design…the awful floral applique, the ‘pregnancy shell’, the bland colour…it’s in fact coming across more mumsy/mother-of-the bride than fashion-forward.

    • Nat39 July 23, 2013 at 22:09 #

…I’m not seeing a great artistically pleasing result here, the idea of it probably was.

    • ash July 23, 2013 at 23:06 #

It’s not trying to be cool or original, it’s based on an original creation of Cristobal Balenciaga. It’s not trying to be fashion forward, it’s a welcomed classic and timeless ensemble inspired by a true innovator.

      • Nat39 July 23, 2013 at 23:41 #

Thanks for the corrections. I appreciate the idea but I’m not enjoying this timeless ensemble – it’s really not a flattering look (Cate does look rather bland and mumsy), and not that super great or inspiring creation artistically imo. I don’t hate or dislike it a lot, no, but not that impressed either.

        • Denise July 24, 2013 at 07:34 #

+1. All the information is very enlightening but I agree on all points.

  39. Lynnette Lai July 23, 2013 at 22:36 #

Speechless. 2 BDOTW! The LDB with a twist and this amazing pieze :)

  40. Prudence July 23, 2013 at 22:59 #

I will join the great minority in saying this is not a good look at all. That cape was an awful idea that does not flatter her whatsoever. this whole look just ages her 20 years. She looks like a little old lady. The shoes which are super boring do not help to this terrible look. The only great thing about this whole ensemble is the beautiful makeup and hairdo. Most definitely one of her worst looks.

  41. Tatiana July 24, 2013 at 00:13 #

I always count it on Cate to deliver something unexpected but gorgeous. She looks very beautiful and perfect.

  42. lisa July 24, 2013 at 00:15 #

What an amazing dress and I think it is an original Critobal Balenciaga dress.

  43. Drew July 24, 2013 at 00:19 #

Love this look from head to toe. What a delight she always is on the red carpet.

  44. Prisca July 24, 2013 at 00:22 #

We are not worthy indeed! She looks flawless.

  45. Namel July 24, 2013 at 00:43 #

It baffles me.Hair, make up, earrings = Perfect. The dress is great but i would prefer it full length if there wasn’t the cape. With the cape i just don’t get the whole ensemble. I feel like there are too many things going on. It needed edgier shoes to elevate it. But even so, she is still working it. I would put it in BDOTW because she looks so regal and in it and it’s not boring.

  46. Dhppy July 24, 2013 at 01:35 #

Okay, I wish she had chosen different shoes, and that the sheer part of the dress weren’t longer than the part underneath it. That aside, this is a level of sophistication that few can bring. It’s very Blanchett.

  47. Fashion Guru July 24, 2013 at 03:16 #

    Very regal and fashion-forward.

    LOVE

  49. carla July 24, 2013 at 04:04 #

Stunning!!!! She did it again!!! This dress is HEAVEN!!! BDOTW for sure!!

  50. Kathy July 24, 2013 at 05:19 #

I hate to say this about someone like Cate, who is as close to perfect on the RC as anyone can get, but I can’t find a single thing I like about this dress. It’s too bulky, awkward, and unflattering to be the unique and quirky design it’s desperately trying to be. The blush tone sort of blends in with Cate’s skin and the effect is strange. Without the cape the look is 100x better, but I still would not consider it BDOTW-worthy.

  51. jeremyrain July 24, 2013 at 11:55 #

At first I was like: “WTF is she wearing?” but I realize this is probably vintage Balenciaga- with such distinctive “new look” of 1950 and instantly felt in love. It’s like seeing old golden Hollywood movie stars come back to life.

  52. Larissa July 24, 2013 at 15:31 #

Amazing! One of the few actresses who have enough grace to pull off this regal look.

  53. Giuliana July 24, 2013 at 18:21 #

She looks out of this world, so elegant and regal like a queen.

  54. Morgan July 24, 2013 at 18:22 #

Im speechless. That dress and cape are a work of art.

  55. dani July 24, 2013 at 18:24 #

So stunning as usual. Can this woman have a bad day? I don’t think so

  56. Claire July 24, 2013 at 18:31 #

I remember seeing this dress on the Balenciaga exhibition and thinking how great I would be to see it on the red carpet.

  57. Zar July 24, 2013 at 18:33 #

Fabulous dress and woman! Simply perfection

  58. Charlotte July 24, 2013 at 20:57 #

I love this. An updated version of Balenciaga’s iconic coats and yes, capes.

  59. MaddyEliza July 25, 2013 at 16:08 #

Definitely better with the cape. A work of art. I agree–BDOTW worthy. Love it.

  60. Fatima July 26, 2013 at 00:05 #

This is one of my favorite looks of her. Everything is so amazing that you cannot find a fault.

  61. Lynn July 26, 2013 at 00:23 #

Very pretty and worth to be seen in a museum.

  62. yesferdinand July 26, 2013 at 01:41 #

here’s the thing, in anyone else, this dress could be a recipe for disaster. but in Kate, it looks VERY REGAL. the craftsmanship is exquisite.

  63. kimberley July 26, 2013 at 13:35 #

Yuck. Looks like she has a plant growing … does she have to water the cape at the end of the night?

Craftsmanship on the top bodice of the dress looks poor. It’s buckling at the front darts and side seams. The seam of the skirt attaching to the bodice is not straight… Photographs can be deceptive and I would assume that Balenciaga would make it perfectly… but it doesn’t look that way.

Colour is lovely… and it does get points for originality, but it’s not a flattering silhouette.
