Zhang Ziyi In Chanel Couture – ‘Only God Forgives’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere

Zhang Ziyi In Chanel Couture - 'Only God Forgives' Cannes Film Festival Premiere

Zhang Ziyi, who is one of the jury members of this event, seems to be doing a good job filling the void left by her fellow jury member Nicole Kidman (where is she?).

The Asian beauty stunned wearing a Chanel gown from the Fall 2009 collection this evening on the red carpet for the ‘Only God Forgives’ Cannes Film Festival premiere.

Her strapless organza gown, fully embroidered with gold-and-black sequins, also features a flowing chiffon train and satin bow accent around the waist.

Many looks from this collection to hit the red carpet appeared sans train, but this is Cannes — a train is almost a red carpet prerequisite.

Impeccable styling, as we’ve come to expect, included Chanel Joallierie jewels, a Ferragamo ‘Faberge’ egg clutch and Jimmy Choo black peep-toes.

Barely there makeup and a simple bun completed her look.

Do you like the train, or does it feel like an after-thought?

Not loving the bow but the rest is gorgeous

Love so much Chanel in Cannes!

Yes, where IS Nicole? Hope she shows up soon, as she has been quite fabulous so far!
Zhang is definitely working this look, but it’s not my favorite. I don’t like the incongruous train, the sheer skirt, or the oversized peplum. Overall the impression isn’t *bad*, but the individual parts don’t really work for me. That said, she carries it off well.

I like the train when she is not moving and standing still. I think this is fabulous.

    B-e-a-u-t-i-ful and Classy Zhang!

Finally some real Cannes worth dresses began to show up! ^_^ I love this!

too weird skirt, need more thin and tall wearer
in my opinion the proportion of the dress make for model only :((

  8. Lyana May 23, 2013 at 09:46 #

    She always looks gorgeous!

From the front the train looks ok. but after looking at the side and back photo, it does look like an after-thought.

Nicole’s absence is indeed getting curious.

Zhang is a jury member for the ‘Un Certain Regard’ portion of the festival, which is different from the Competition for the Palm d’Or portion and they have different juries. ‘Only God Forgives’ is in Competition, so why Zhang attended and not Nicole is interesting.

The members of the jury do not attend the red carpets for every film (that would be 20 red carpets – I’m assuming they enter the theater through the back to view the film) and Diane Kruger did only attend 4 premiere red carpets least year. However, the fact that Nicole did not attend the ‘Jimmy P’ premiere along with Steven Spielberg or the ‘Behind the Candelabra’ premiere with Christoph Waltz is puzzling. What really boosted Diane’s presence last year was how many parties she attended, and so far Nicole has only attended one.

Seeing as Nicole is one of the most famous movie stars and fashionistas on the planet, I’m frankly quite shocked she’s not using Cannes to it’s fullest potential. I understand that she’s taken on a more quiet life since her marriage to Keith and having children, but she’s already in Cannes – she might as well make the most of it!

FC – Cannes is always a sentimental time for me and your site. It was during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival (specifically Kerry Washington in Jean Paul Gaultier) that I first discovered your site and I’ve been returning multiple times a day every day for the past 6 years. It’s simply the best fashion site out there! Your tireless efforts do not go without a great deal of appreciation!

where exactly is Nicole actually. doesnt her role dictate that she attend most premieres? I mean Diane had like soooo many outings last year.

  12. Reez May 23, 2013 at 00:55 #

the best Chanel dress after a loooonnnnggg time!

  13. Windsor May 23, 2013 at 00:41 #

I think Zhang Ziyi was supposed to be this year replacement of Diane Kruger. I think we might all mistaken that it would be Nicole Kidman.

    • Catherine Kallon May 23, 2013 at 01:44 #

      I agree with the statement

  14. theblackrabbit May 23, 2013 at 00:37 #

Sorry, people. It reminds me too much of a mushroom.

  15. theblackrabbit May 23, 2013 at 00:36 #

    Only God forgives that dress!

  16. Kimi May 23, 2013 at 00:32 #

Though the train could do without, I think overall the look is beautiful and elegant. I wish it wasn’t a bow, on the runway, but rather like the model but still Zhang Ziyi looks impeccable! Probably one of my favorite looks from this festival!

  17. Ramsay May 23, 2013 at 00:29 #

Yes she looks fine – There is something about Chanel that manages to make every look, even a potentially overloaded look (the train, the sparkles, the peplum, the very stiff fabric) quite chic.
I like this dress a lot and it is one of my favourites this festival – though I can’t imagine she was comfortable sitting in it
Regarding Nicole, indeed she is missed – she already did two fine outings (including one outing in Simons’ best ever Dior dress and one of the best dresses to a Cannes Opening ceremony) and three more casual looks (Dior, McQueen and Calvin Klein) which were all fine – But we want more of her
I suspect she will come back tomorrow to the red carpet (and after that to the Amfar gala) – but whereas starlets today would change dresses between the red carpet and the gala she probably won’t – That’s the thing with her, it seems, she will play the red carpet game but not fully – and she will remind people every once in a while of her full potential (A Jean Paul Gaultier gown at the Grammys, a Vivien Westwood at the SAG, a Dior at Cannes) but she will only do so sporadically – And most days she will give the impression of holding back – Or using the red carpet more to help a friend set up a business than herself to reinforce her position as a fashion icon – And I guess in holding back she ironically keeps people interested because they know that every once in a while she will dazzle them

Everything is working here for me, I’m captivated with the unusual silhouette, and the elegant train is incorporated into the look tastefully and adds some subtle drama to the look. Her styling is impeccable. This is an interesting unusual look and def. gets thumbs up from me.

RIght now I’m just asking myself why on earth I love this look so much. The proportions don’t feel quite right, and I hate heavy black pumps. SO WHY DO I LOVE IT!? Haha I don’t know what to do with myself…I guess I’m just a sucker for shiny dresses. And Ziyi looks confident and fierce.

  20. Yeliz May 22, 2013 at 23:41 #

The train does feel like an after-thought, especially from the side view. The overall look, except for the bow accent, is stunning though. Hair and makeup are beautiful as always.

  21. Tiger Nueng May 22, 2013 at 23:32 #

I love the glam colour !! and hope Nicole Kidman will be back at least 2 red carpet.

  22. Prudence May 22, 2013 at 23:25 #

wowowow! My first wow of cannes so far. Unpredictable, great styling, great hair and makeup. BDOTD/ OF CANNES SO FAR

    • Agathe May 23, 2013 at 00:54 #

      I totally agree!

  23. Fashionlover May 22, 2013 at 23:22 #

She looks gorgeous!! I agree with you..where is nicole kidman?

  24. Moxie May 22, 2013 at 23:21 #

With that peplum, the train looks like an afterthought.

The dress, sans train, is lovely.

    • Christine May 23, 2013 at 03:21 #

+1 The train is not needed here.

      • Alicat May 23, 2013 at 03:35 #

+2 agree. The train distracts from a very interesting silhouette. She looks very beautiful.

I just want to comment in regard to your comments you seem to have about Nicole Kidman on all of your posts. I want to make sure you are aware Diane Kruger only had 4 red carpet looks total from last years festival. Nicole has 2 so far, and there are 4 more days of this years festival left. I don’t understand your reasoning to comment about Nicole on this post. For me it takes away the attention from where it belongs.. on Zhang.

    • Catherine Kallon May 23, 2013 at 01:47 #

It was suppose to be taken in jest…I will refrain from this in future since it clearly doesn’t translate well.

Those who know this blog well, know that I often make tongue and check statements for humour purposes only.

      • Graham May 23, 2013 at 18:05 #

I think your jokes in jest are just fine. It is not mean and nor is it in bad taste.

What is the rule of jury members anyway? I mean they must have to see the films in competition but do they not have walk the red carpet? It seems like Nicole is taking a vacation more than performing her duties or is there not really any rule about the amount of red carpet one has to do?

    • KatieKate May 23, 2013 at 03:57 #

I think it’s pretty obvious that this was a harmless attempt at good-natured humor. Also, I know the comment was made because we actually miss seeing Nicole’s looks,, not meaning anything derogatory.

    • P. May 23, 2013 at 06:22 #

OMG, I’m baffled that some people can’t take some jokes! It bores me to death that everything has to be so literal…
Anyway, the gown is very special, the awkward train not so much. BTW, I wish that bow did not exist. It kinda cheapens the otherwise sophisticated dress.

Fashion is supposed to be fun. Lighten the mood and have fun with it. So much negativity in this comment
