Oscars Beauty Trend: Bejeweled Hair

Bejeweled Hair

Actresses attending the awards ceremonies are always dripping in millions of dollars worth of diamonds, but a surprising amount of jewelry has been appearing in the stars’ hair this year.

Ellie Kemper and Morena Baccarin kicked off the trend at the SAG Awards last month when they both wore diamond brooches in their up dos, and at 2013 Oscars Sandra Bullock sported a platinum and diamond Harry Winston brooch pinned above her left ear and Salma Hayek tied up her oversized bun with a gold Cindy Chao choker.

Stylists were doubtless taking inspiration from the catwalk where tiaras, headbands and brooches worn as hair accessories have been popping up at Dolce & Gabbana, Rodarte and Meadham Kirchoff.

Hair stylist Mara Roszak, who worked with Nicole Kidman at the Academy Awards this year, told us: ‘Wearing jewels in the hair can be a really fresh addition to a look. It takes accessorizing to another level. The most important part is finding the right piece to use. It has to make sense. I like pieces to be more subtle and not take away from the hairstyle, but add a nice feminine touch.’

‘In Nicole’s hair I used an antique brooch that matched her beautiful Fred Leighton earrings. They were picked out by her stylist, and the brooch was perfect for the hair.’ ‘I like to place hair accessories on one side of a hairstyle, not symmetrical in any way. Kind of like a hidden treasure.’

The good news is that anyone can try this look  – even if Neil Lane is not prepared to loan you an 18k piece from his collection. Any brooch can be adapted with the help of a few bobby pins or try Tarina Tarantino for a selection of beautiful hair crystal, lucite and tulle accessories that won’t break the bank.
