Zooey Deschanel joined the star-studded guest list at the 2013 Vanity Fair Party for the Oscars tonight, hosted by editor Graydon Carter, at the Sunset Tower in California.
But, for Hollywood’s biggest evening of the year, the ‘New Girl’ actress’s long-sleeve dress from the Valentino Resort 2013 collection was a bit of a downer.
Even Zooey seemed a bit melancholy.
The look was charming enough, and at least the dusty pink hue and the too-sweet embellishment was brighter than the lookbook version. But despite the sheer chiffon layers, there was a heaviness and a matronly edge to this design.
It all was rather demure and folksy for such a glittery evening.
The highlight of the look was Zooey’s newly cropped haircut, which was parted to the side and curled under. I cannot wait to see how this cute new ‘do looks with one of her signature quirky-cool ensembles.

I loved the gown on the model, but it washes Zooey out.
Yup, she isn’t doing a single thing to bring life into the dress.
I agree.
+3
I get the romantic vibe she was going for but I don’t like it.
When it comes to “Little house in the prairie” couture, I much prefer, for example, Leighton Meester in Burberry at the 2011 GG.
It’s a bit meh for me, the hairstyle is ugly, it ages her. The dress does nothing for her, and I don’t know if it’s the light, but the color is different from the original version.
It must be so hard to wear a gown, go to such a glamorous event… she reminds me of Kristen Stewart…
Another one I love from the neck up. Love the hair. But that dress… several actresses have worn looks from this collection, and done it better. The color isn’t doing her any favors.
Loved the potential gown on the model, hoped that someone would wear it and line the bodice. On Zooey, it’s…sad. Really sad. Her hair is cute but the rest of it–and her slumpy pose–is nowhere.
It’s like her main aim in life to be the most bland person on the red carpet. I’m tired of her wasting her potential like this. I really don’t like this look
This is just so, so sad.
She looks like a 5-year old being made to do something she doesn’t want to do.
She looks unhappy and washed-out.
