Adele In Valentino Couture – 2013 Grammy Awards

Adele In Valentino Couture - 2013 Grammy Awards

I was very excited to see Adele take to the red carpet this evening in California at the 2013 Grammy Awards for two reasons.

Firstly, Adele is wearing a colour other than black for a refreshing, long overdue, change; and the shorter version of her Valentino Spring 2013 Couture dress works better for me at knee-length.

The original length could’ve been quite unflattering, overly fussy and not really event appropriate.

Save the longer length for Keira Knightley I say.

Her red-and-black embroidered frock with a full voluminous skirt was styled with matching pumps.

A sweeping updo and glossy lips completed her look.

Do you love this departure from her usual style, or is it not working for you?

I absolutely love this! I love dresses like this and i don’t care about the grandma, tablecloth comments. I do wish her hair was down, though or just a bit more done. Otherwise, lovely and I’m glad she’s not wearing black. She’s blossoming and her makeup is always on point.

  2. Ali February 11, 2013 at 00:32 #

No sorry not working. Do like that she’s not wearing black for a change but this is too fussy and I can’t help but think of ‘I’m a little teapot’ when I look at her.

    • Kathy February 11, 2013 at 03:49 #

      Agree 100%

    • dee February 11, 2013 at 13:37 #

      I agree.

      • Lisa February 11, 2013 at 14:37 #

        +4. Not for the grammys

    • Shan September 15, 2014 at 02:54 #

Forgive me, but I think she looks ADORABLE!! I know she looks like a tea pot the way she is standing, but she still looks ADORABLE. :)

  3. Francois Bresmal February 11, 2013 at 00:34 #

    Looooooving her bold choice

    • Shannon February 11, 2013 at 17:43 #

      Same! Love it :)

  4. arang February 11, 2013 at 00:35 #

Oh dear, I so wanted to see her in something other than black. These colors look lovely on her, but the pattern is rather mesmerizing and not in a good way. I don’t see her figure. My eyes get stuck on the pattern. The shortened length is good but a more open neckline would’ve been even better.

    • unvacuous February 11, 2013 at 04:13 #

Agree completely, the high neckline is a bit much, a more open neckline would make it less matronly

    • Moxie February 11, 2013 at 13:16 #

Couldn’t agree more about the pattern and the neckline.

  5. Marlie February 11, 2013 at 00:36 #

Love it!!! So nice to see her out of black. Like it more than the runway version.

  6. ama February 11, 2013 at 00:39 #

i love adele but she looks like the queen of spades or something from alice in wonderland – and i say that in a negative way!

    • Gabby M February 11, 2013 at 10:44 #

omg i thought the samething! thank you! haha

  7. Christine February 11, 2013 at 00:40 #

She looks lovely. This is a great dress for her.

    • pat February 11, 2013 at 05:09 #

all I can say you are blind talent is talent ugly is ugly she is a fabulous singer but she had to look in the mirrow and say ” I don’t think so”
where were her friends?? Someone needed to tell her No!!!!

  8. Nat39 February 11, 2013 at 00:40 #

The fussy colourful print, the cut, the voluminous skirt are a very bad choice for her body type, they only widen her visually. The matching printed pumps are a bit too much. This is all wrong for her.

    • Sam February 11, 2013 at 04:42 #

Totally agree, no surprise we are begging for the black dresses to come back!

    • Yeliz February 11, 2013 at 06:03 #

Completely agree. Glad to see her wearing something other than black, but this isn’t working.

      • Eve-M February 11, 2013 at 16:49 #

I 100% second that- all so unflattering.

  9. Shaina February 11, 2013 at 00:45 #

I love this shorter version and the dress itself but not so much on Adele. She looks beautiful but something else could have been a little more flattering.

  10. carla February 11, 2013 at 00:47 #

I was thrilled to see Adele in this dress, it looks great!!

  11. Luis February 11, 2013 at 00:49 #

I didn’t dislike, but the shoes ruined the look and give me a vibe of flamenco!

  12. haroula February 11, 2013 at 00:53 #

no not all even though she is wearing a colour other than black but no she looks like an english granny teapot no

  13. AnnaP February 11, 2013 at 00:53 #

I actually involuntarily laughed out loud when I saw this. It is like she is dressed in hideous Edwardian wallpaper.

    • LC February 11, 2013 at 05:26 #

Yeah. Totally agree. What was she thinking? It makes her look so BIG.

  14. Paulo February 11, 2013 at 00:54 #

I wish that they used the bodice pattern of the runway version to create Adele’s look instead of the huge pattern of the skirt which unfortunately does not flatter her.

    • Marybeth February 11, 2013 at 01:30 #

What a good suggestion! If they had used the smaller, less bold pattern on the skirt and perhaps cut the volume down a bit, this could have worked very well.
The red and rose colors really do look wonderful on her.

      • the ogre February 11, 2013 at 06:53 #

i agree with paulo and marybeth a 100 per cent. the same thought kinda flashed my mind when i saw the picture. otherwise it’s not black so i’m just okay with this.

  15. Kate February 11, 2013 at 00:56 #

I am so thrilled to see her in a COLOR that I can overlook the fact that I wouldn’t be crazy about this dress on anyone else.

It’s the Grammys, so I think a quirky print fits right in. Any other occasion and this wouldn’t be appropriate.

Let’s go easy on her, everyone, or she might be scared back into her boring black ensembles.

  16. EmmaWoodhouse February 11, 2013 at 00:56 #

It’s not an easy look to wear but I was excited by this look–it steps out of her box, is fun and color and very different. I get the tea pot/wallpaper references that are being made, and it’s certainly not everyone’s *cup of tea* ;), but this bold look works for me! I love the shoes especially.

    • Anne February 11, 2013 at 01:29 #

      +1, 100%

    • admmgz February 11, 2013 at 05:52 #

      ITA

    • Jess2 February 11, 2013 at 11:51 #

      Agrees! She looks really good

  17. Dhppy February 11, 2013 at 01:14 #

Well, it looks much better in photos than it did on screen, but still. No. It just looked like moving wallpaper.

  18. arwa February 11, 2013 at 01:19 #

I love it … I just wish if she chose a classic black pump

  19. Liz February 11, 2013 at 01:46 #

I LOVE it!! She looks amazing. Whoever says curvy women can’t wear prints like this was just proved oh so wrong.

  20. CDC February 11, 2013 at 01:49 #

This is AMAZING, I love every detail of this outfit!

  21. Amy February 11, 2013 at 01:53 #

love the color, love the print but the shape is odd. She looks like a bibendum . I’m glad she picked a bold color but this isn’t working, the shape just ruins it and does nothing for her figure

  22. Angela February 11, 2013 at 01:57 #

I love seeing Adele on the red carpet, she always looks joyous and appreciative. I love that she didn’t go safe and wear black, and she pulls off the pattern well, and her hai and makeup is perfect. Honestly, with most of the posts I’ve seen for the Grammys so far, this will be the only one I’ll remember!

  23. Janani February 11, 2013 at 01:59 #

LOVE IT!! It is a lot of print, but she carries it off with confidence – and I quite like the shape on her too. Great change from her usual style.

  24. MaddyEliza February 11, 2013 at 02:12 #

Hmm. Not sure I like the dress…but I am SO glad to see her wearing something other than black. :) Hate the pumps though. With such a busy dress, they should have been a solid colour.

  25. Kathy February 11, 2013 at 02:39 #

I don’t mean to insult her weight, but she looks like a walking umbrella. I’ve never seen a dress so unflattering on anyone. This print and hairdo are doing her no favors. She looks about 48 years old. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was the same age or older than Nicole Kidman.

  26. Pedro February 11, 2013 at 03:09 #

    She looks STUNNING!

  27. rebecca o February 11, 2013 at 03:31 #

I really wish she didn’t wear matching shoes. It would have made her look a bit less matronly.

  28. Rebecca Z February 11, 2013 at 04:43 #

    Stuffed sofa.

  29. Evil Britta February 11, 2013 at 05:13 #

I really like it, but i think I need a belt to really love it. And some strong black shoes.

  30. noo February 11, 2013 at 05:31 #

I love it! It’s so weird but in a good way. I like it when artists tap into their creative side for looks that are controversial, it’s working well for her imo!

    • ahot February 11, 2013 at 08:59 #

everything you said. She is oozing confidence & that is sexy!

  31. Pene February 11, 2013 at 06:24 #

she was my best surprise of the night

  32. Maya February 11, 2013 at 07:58 #

I find it cute but when i look at her I see this russan Matrjoschka.

  33. Yolonda February 11, 2013 at 08:26 #

I love this look for Adele – she looks gorgeous! BDOTW please

  34. Annel February 11, 2013 at 10:06 #

Refreshing! I dig. It’s humoristic, unpretentious and she rocks it with great confidence as she does with everything.

  35. Noemi February 11, 2013 at 10:29 #

She looks like a sofa. Honestly, we all know she likes retro hairstyles and make up. I think that her hairstyles ages her so much. But let’s be honest, this dress would look good on Keira because she’s Keira and can work this kind of dresses well. I don’t like the way the sleeves have been modified, it makes everything too heavy. And sorry, I must write this even if it doesn’t concern fashion. She has a great voice for sure, but her music is soooo boring.

    • Kathy February 11, 2013 at 18:33 #

Agree on all counts. While I love seeing her branch out beyond floor-length black dresses, Adele needs to learn that there are certain things certain people don’t look good in. It’s different for everyone, but that’s also why people have stylists to help them choose the RIGHT kind of clothing.

  36. Gabby M February 11, 2013 at 10:43 #

I literally loled at this :D Cute shoes tho! love kitten heels, but of course the shoes wouldve only worked with an understated dress…

  37. Gabby M February 11, 2013 at 10:45 #

    btw worst dressed!

  38. Alex February 11, 2013 at 10:46 #

    Joyous!

  39. anjos February 11, 2013 at 11:37 #

I’m confused why the entire top wasn’t the same pattern like the sleeves. I think it’d break it up a bit. Looks too bulky with the bigger pattern both up and down. Other than that, it’s really interesting and refreshing. I do love that length of skirt.

  40. jeremyrain February 11, 2013 at 11:52 #

OMG what fresh hell is this? She could choose Valentino and this is the print she took? Could they choose a more ‘grandma’s basement garment” for her?

  41. Kat February 11, 2013 at 13:04 #

No, just no. The print is fun but everything else is wrong here. Starting with the stumpifying high collar, the square bodice, the lampshade cut of the skirt. I think this could have worked in the runway form (slight v-neckline, different bodice pattern, floral gauze for the sleeves and floor length). The alterations ruin the look for me.

  42. carolina roq February 11, 2013 at 13:38 #

looks like a ‘capinha de botijão de gás’

  43. Joy February 11, 2013 at 15:56 #

Love!!! I so want this dress. I love that she is not wearing black. She looks beautiful!

  44. Jilly February 11, 2013 at 16:23 #

I love it. She looks happy, the color is great and she looks like she is having fun and not taking things to seriously.

  45. Ericka February 11, 2013 at 17:36 #

    I absolutely love this.

  46. robbie February 11, 2013 at 17:39 #

love her, she is beautiful but this dress is like a tea cosy.

  47. Glenda February 11, 2013 at 18:57 #

I LOVE this. It’s such a big step out of her comfort zone but it really pays off. She’s shining! I know it’s only Monday, but if this doesn’t manage to make it into the BDOTW list, it’ll have been a very strong week.

  48. TeaAtTwo February 11, 2013 at 19:54 #

Happy to see her out of black. This is fun and the print looks cute on her. Hope she repeats wearing colour.

  49. Anna February 11, 2013 at 21:57 #

Love it. Love the shape, love the shoes, love the color.

  50. Betelgeuze February 11, 2013 at 23:17 #

As much as I love the fact that Adele finally wore something that isn’t black, this unfortunately doesn’t work for me. When you think off the boldness it’s a great look though.

I think she should take a lesson or two from my mother on how to be oversized and dress nicely. I believe big, bold prints are number two on her absolute no-no list, right between giant tents and vibrant-hued minis.

  51. Louise February 12, 2013 at 10:27 #

I don’t mind the dress, it’s a lovely dress, just the shoes. Too matchy-matchy (the earings was matchy enough for me)
