Solange Knowles In Dolce & Gabbana – American Ballet Theatre Opening Night Fall New York City Center Gala

Solange Knowles, much to her surprise, was heralded as the face of natural afro hair, but last night she sported sleek, straight locks when she took to the red carpet at the American Ballet Theatre Opening Night Fall New York City Center Gala.

She donned a Dolce & Gabbana dress. Yes, one of the few Kylie Minogue has yet to get her hands on.

The multi-coloured floral and cherub scene print dress with a flared skirt was styled with double-strap Dolce & Gabbana pumps with opulent gold embellishments.

Dripping with more gold, she added gold bracelets, a large cocktail ring and teardrop earrings to her look.

A bright red lip colour and a simple black Diane von Furstenberg clutch provided the finishing touches.

I’m sure the new ‘do will be the main talking point, but what do you think of her overall look?

  2. Jones19 October 17, 2012 at 15:07 #

This look is just so not her. I don’t like it.

  3. shiny October 17, 2012 at 15:14 #

    her feet are doing jazz-hands

    • mm October 17, 2012 at 17:57 #

      LOL!

  4. Christine October 17, 2012 at 15:22 #

SO she permed her hair. Ok.

I like the dress and love the shoes. Love her style!

    • Fashion Critic October 17, 2012 at 15:40 #

      Could just be pressed straight

    • justme October 17, 2012 at 18:00 #

The roots are still curly. It’s definitely a pressed straight job like FC said.

  5. Rebecca Z October 17, 2012 at 15:33 #

She looks pretty, but it is strangely tame for her.

  6. Erini October 17, 2012 at 15:34 #

Not her best look imo! Certainly bring back the afro, her natural hair gives her such an edge and sets her apart from everyone else!

  7. Beta October 17, 2012 at 15:43 #

I’m green with envy about going to the ABT’s opening night!!
also, Solange looks very ladylike and polished. Love that she’s so versatile.

  8. Anita October 17, 2012 at 16:09 #

I think she looks great. Although I prefer her usual style, its nice to know that she can can switch it up and not be boring.

  9. dee October 17, 2012 at 16:22 #

She looks very pretty. As far as the hair goes, nothing wrong with switching things up a bit.

  10. Fanny October 17, 2012 at 16:27 #

    I miss her hair!

  11. arjun October 17, 2012 at 16:29 #

so funny with the kylie minogue jock so true
i lov this style, but i think it’s not so her, it’s great, basic, maybe because of her hair
    question:
WHY THIS GIRL DNT HAVE HER VOGUE,ELLE,or ELSE cover SERIOUSLY???

    • AnneC October 18, 2012 at 06:58 #

she has a SOuth African Elle cover that came out 2days ago

  12. Boom October 17, 2012 at 16:55 #

This is not her best look there is not much to it. There is something a bit blah and off about it.

  13. LizLemoooon October 17, 2012 at 16:56 #

Aw the outfit is actually pretty great and as usual well accessorised but it looks so boring and generic with that straightened hair.
She can look just as ladylike and polished without a fro and anyone who thinks otherwise clearly needs more diversity in their lives.
Obviously she can do what she wants with her hair but this look is very disappointing tbh. It doesn’t seem like her.

Idk. Look like she using one of House of Dereon’s wigs. Available soon….

    • Fashion Critic October 17, 2012 at 17:25 #

She is not wearing a wig. Why do people think black girl with long hair = that she’s wearing a wig.

From her afro you can see that she has very long hair. Don’t forget that afro hair is tight curls….straighten it out and you have long hair.

      • CreoleLady October 17, 2012 at 18:54 #

        Exactly. Good grief.

OT, FC, I’ve got to say you are leaving me breathless with your posts. How do you do it? I’m just reading them and I can’t keep up. Yesterday was a tour de force. Thank you, thank you, thank you! So glad you are obsessed with fashion and share your obsession with us. I only hope you are getting some sleep, lol.

        • Fashion Critic October 17, 2012 at 19:13 #

:D yes I do manage, somehow to get some sleep.

I do a lot in advance and schedule them throughout the day to leave me time to do other things.

          • Rebecca Z October 17, 2012 at 20:54 #

Great planning, but where do you find the time for advance?

            • Fashion Critic October 17, 2012 at 21:30 #

              Get up at 6am ;)

    • Lorielle October 18, 2012 at 02:08 #

I’m dying!! Let me know if I have you wrong, but you’re talking about Solange’s competing textures, yes? If you’re going for a straight look, go all the way with it. Leaving the roots kinky is just a bad look.

      • dee October 18, 2012 at 13:40 #

Maybe she didn’t want to commit to having it straightened. Maybe she wanted to see how it would be for just a night. Her hair looks fine to me.

  15. Nat39 October 17, 2012 at 17:29 #

It’s an adorable look but somehow I get a feeling she is not comfortable with it.

  16. Rafael October 17, 2012 at 17:45 #

I love it!!! She looks so chic

    • Cascia October 17, 2012 at 18:39 #

      +1

  17. mm October 17, 2012 at 17:59 #

The look is okay, maybe too sweet. Her hair looks good. but i think she has more a presence/impact with the afro.

Solange’s hair is not permed it’s just pressed out either with a flat iron or a straightening comb. She can go back to natural with a hair washing. I like the outfit and I see why she went with straight long hair instead of the curly hair. I even like the shoes, they look like her.

  19. Yeliz October 17, 2012 at 18:50 #

I think she looks stunning, I really love this!

  20. anna October 17, 2012 at 19:38 #

I am pretty neutral on the dress but the make-up is amazing.

  21. Kathy October 17, 2012 at 19:55 #

It looks so much like the McQ S/S 2012 dress with the flower petals on it, the one Victoria Justice wore to the Met Ball and appeared in a bunch of editorials as well.

  22. Sonya October 18, 2012 at 01:36 #

I think she looks lovely and polished and appropriate for the ballet. It’s good to see what a chameleon she is.

  23. Jess2 October 18, 2012 at 08:27 #

Could have done without the bracelet but I really like this look and her hair. I wonder how long it would take to get her so straight and lovely like that.

  24. Pene October 18, 2012 at 09:38 #

i love how she embraces her natural hair. good message

  25. Agathe October 18, 2012 at 14:25 #

Good versatility but I don’t find this dress so flattering, especially for her mid-section.

  26. TeaAtTwo October 18, 2012 at 22:36 #

I think she looks great, I like that she chose exciting accessories that still went well with the already busy dress. It’s cool that she mixes up her hairstyles and hasn’t let her hair being a defining statement for her.

  27. EmmaWoodhouse October 19, 2012 at 13:33 #

I really like it! She’s switching up her hair, switching up her style–I think she looks great. Those shoes are so fun!
