For Fall 2012, Mary Katrantzou was inspired by everyday items: wrist watches, coat hangers, typewriter keyboards, spoons, and most notably No.2 HB pencils.
You may have had to do a double take, but these are items which make up her vibrant prints for the season.
The most impressive thing about the pencils is that they were embroidered and shaped onto the skirt rather than being a print. I would imagine it would be difficult to sit in, and therefore, when this look goes into production, I’m sure it will be a print.
Mary gave us architectural shapes on a colour palette of canary yellow, emerald green, ruby red and ocean blue, alongside light chiffon pieces with floaty ruffled skirts.
I don’t recall Mary presenting knits in the past, so as someone who loves a sweater dress, I was excited to see these pieces presented with large turtle necks.
Funnel neck coats, beaded pants, off-the-shoulder sculptural tops, capes, ruffle-neck long-sleeve dresses and a long-sleeve gown were presented.
With more and more celebs falling in love with Mary Katrantzou, I’m sure we will be seeing these pieces on the red carpet soon.
I just hope they pair the looks with the gorgeous coloured Christian Louboutin pumps and ankle boots we saw at the show.

+1
Fantastic and sooo creative collection! Love Mary Katrantzou!
i recently discovered her and her collections are amazing! the last dress was my favourite one!
I was really looking forward to this post, even though you gave us material through your Twitter account too. Thank you about that too!
I was also pleasantly surprised by the knitted pieces.
I’ve read that you see Tilda Swinton wearing this collection and I was surprised but as I keep thinking about it, I would die to see her in the long green gown, the third on this post.
Yes the green gown has her name all over it
The second look at the top appears to have the pants as the yellow base of the pencil, and the pink eraser part just poking out under the oversized sweater. So creative! I love this collection.
wow, one thing mary never lets you down with it colour! so many beautiful pieces words can not describe how much i love look 5, really hope it will be seen on the red carpet soon.
Crazy and probably unwearable but so fun! The pencil skirt (lol, what a pun) is fabulous!
As usual with MK, an incredibly creative collection, it must have been so fun to see it up close…
Incredible! Such individuality and creativity- wish her all the success
More McQueen than McQueen.
Pink/ Yellow and Black is actualy what i like when it comes to fashion but the pencil art d-sign is i am not sure but look’s so beautiful.
So project runway!
Strong disagree
You misunderstood my comment. I didn’t mean to disparage the dress — it’s an innovative design using a common item used daily. Perhaps I should have written project runway winner.
Gotcha
This is super creative! wish some celebrity endorse that “pencils” skirt it will be so much fun
