Viola Davis For LA Times Magazine February 2012

Viola Davis has upped the style stakes during awards season and has consistently appeared on the Best Dressed List, so I’m happy to see her in a high-fashion magazine shoot.

For the LA Times she reveals just how strikingly beautiful she is with natural hair that really highlights her features.

The 46-year-old channels her inner supermodel on the cover in a fitted Marchesa dress with lace sleeves and organza flower detailing.

I don’t know about you, but she looks 20 years younger.

The rest of the editorial sees her wearing a sculptural Jason Wu dress, a Thierry Mugler lace and velvet trim suit and a Costume National fur poncho.

On her slow rise to fame: “You can be in the business for 23 years, which I have been, and suddenly something happens that wakes people up. For me, that was being in a movie (Doubt) with Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It makes people realize you’re there. Otherwise you’re that black girl who had a guest or costar role in a TV show here or there.”

On the difficulty of landing A-list roles in Hollywood: “That really is our plight, especially as women of colour. You can have all the training in the world, come from a respectable background and yet never get that big opportunity that breaks you out – never.”

On her desire to start producing films: “I am doing this out of necessity. If I am not the instrument of change, I can meander through this business and be the black woman who always has two or three scenes but with fabulous actors around me.”

WOW. She should ditch the wigs all together and just appear on the red carpet as her beautiful natural self.

I have so much respect for this woman. She’s using this buzz around her right now to bring up issues that people like to brush aside all too often and has done it all wearing fabulous, stylish outfits.
    Love this photoshoot!
Love the fact that her hair is natural, I would absolutely DIE of happiness if she wore her hair like this to the Oscars but either way I’m sure she’ll look fantastic.

My jaw is dropping. She looks so chic, sexy, classy, sophisticated, glamorous – I LOVE her with this short natural hair. These clothes are all amazing on her. Whoever styled this shoot did an excellent, excellent job.

She comes across as very down to earth and mature with a lot of experience in life and in her career, which makes her very interesting, and clearly she’s very talented. I have no doubt that she will indeed create change for women of colour in Hollywood.

Knock me over with a feather. I did not recognize her in that first shot. Not sure if that is because of Photoshop or the fabulous drama of the short natural hair. Love the last shot the most. I’ve got to get my hands on this. If Viola comes to the Oscars looking this fine, you’ll hear me whoopin’ it up from coast to coast.
