I’m going to do what most fashion blogs will never do: give Alexa Chung the ‘Most Overrated’ award.
If there was a fashion blogger rule book, rule #5 would be ‘Thou must love Alexa Chung’s style’.
Sorry but not only do I not like it – at times I just don’t get it.
Who in their right mind hits the red carpet wearing a Chanel dress without even taking a comb to their hair?
Shabby chic just doesn’t cut it for me. Give me the flawless Fan Bingbing any day.

I don’t get her as a fashion girl, I don’t even get her as an interviewer. When she’s in the red carpet press line interviewing stars I just roll my eyes at how blah she is with her questions and rapport.
I totally understand, FC, I don’t get her style at all. I appreciate ‘effortless’, and ‘imperfect’, which is Kate Moss, but I don’t see it with Alexa Chung.
Give me Dita Von Teese’s impeccable ’50s glamour sidewalk style any day!
Thanks for this post. I can barely go anywhere online without seeing Alexa heralded as a brilliant fashionista, and it’s refreshing to have a blog to read that doesn’t get caught up in the hype. She never impresses me, and I’m so glad I have a place to read an honest opinion on truly beautiful fashion, not sloppy dressing like Alexa’s.

I agree with you word by word. For me the worst are her shoes, even when she’s a little decent with thre rest is like she’s thinking “let destroy this with the most ugly shoes in my closet”.
Dita von Teese, Fan Bingbing, Miranda Kerr, Evan Rachel Wood or Diane Kruger are icons, this girl is just half asleep when she dresses herself.

Couldn’t agree more! As an Aussie I’ve never understood her appeal (or why she is famous for that matter!).
I love seeing women who look put together from head to toe (Charlize, Fan, Cate etc), Alexa looks like she rolled out of bed and fell into a pile of designer clothes!
P.S She should also get the ‘Worst/Most Boring She Collection’ award!!

Personally (and I’ll probably get shot for this), I’d give this award to Kate Moss over Alexa Chung. Alexa is overrated, but Kate is the Queen of the Undeserving for me. She has been granted fashion icon status based seemingly upon her ability to show up to every second event in a slightly “eccentric” floor-length gown, a fur jacket, messy hair and a boldly predictable red lip. Tired and lame.
I can give you a hug for this statement. So spot on.

Agree with everyone. I’ve never seen Chung doing an interview, I’ve only ever seen her on this blog. Kate Moss I never got the appeal of, but then I do live in Canada so I’m not super exposed to her either.
I’m sorry but Fan BingBing might know fashion and can pick looks directly out of the runway but Alexa is all about STYLE!! .. i think she has a mini Coco Chanel spirit in her

I think her candid style is great, I’ve loved many of her street outfits, I’m actually a big fan. She often comes up short on the red carpet though. Quirky doesn’t work there, people expect something more polished.

I dont think I can agree more. Most overrated “fashionista” in the history of fashion blog. She “kills” the spirit of each high end outfit she wears. Can Chanel look cheap? SURE CAN ON ALEXA.
I think that Alexa is more of an anti-style icon. I commend her and admire her for that. She puts on whatever, she wears wears flats with evening wear, doesn’t brush her hair, wears minimal makeup. All of this is refreshing. She isn’t this fussed up mass produced mannequin-like starlet with perfect not-a-hair-out-of-place kind of style. She chooses comfort over style by not opting for high heels all the time. She’s left off center and unique, and That’s what the ‘Alexa Chung’ appeal is all about.

I agree this wasnt her best year in style but i love all of her looks from last year, back when she had pretty shiny ombre hair with bangs. She had stellar look after stellar look. Now i agree she has been phoning it in for a while…

omg yes!! i tried to get it–i really really did–but i can’t. is that the french ‘je ne said quoi’ with the unwashed hair? bc i just want to throw baby powder or dry shampoo at her scalp to soak up the excess oil.

the thing is.. you dont have to be glam in an elie saab gown to have impeccable style. but u do have to look polished and i live by this as a stylist. clean hair and decent make up are a must. clean hair is the biggest must. there is a thin line between sloppy and effortlessly chic. sorry alexa.. Could we put this kind of post on a daily basis. I love the BDOTW posts but sometimes I enjoy couple “Worst of…” I’m so sick of fashion blogs and magazine kissing ass of celebrities like Alexa, Blake, etc… We need someone who’s bold enough to stand up and take the bullets for us =))))

Thank you for affirming my opinion. It has been driving me crazy! Every time I see her on 24-Hour Catwalk, I cannot imagine the producers of the show or anyone for that matter could not help but notice that her hair is not combed! not only not combed, but with that unflattering, unwanted ‘bend’ we women get in our hair after sleeping on it. We go crazy trying to get rid of that ‘bend’ by using round brushes, curling irons, whatever we can to give our crowning glory some shape, style and beauty! I understand there are messy, tousled styles, but hers bears no resemblance at all. And I know she is very skinny, but c’mon, someone should know how to dress her in something that fits and is flattering for her figure. She’s on national TV for Pete’s sake and most of her outfits hang on her as though they were on a clothes hanger. Yep, she definitely deserves this award.
