Style Spotlight: Ulyana Sergeenko

Ulyana Sergeenko is a Russian photographer, designer, stylist, blogger, fashionista and occasional model.

I have been meaning to do this Style Spotlight on her for a while as I first saw Ulyana back in July during Fall 2011 Couture Fashion Week in Paris. Since then I have noticed her popping up on a lot of style blogs.

I was immediately drawn to the unique beauty, doll-like features, perfect pout, impeccable style and incredible grace – she doesn’t walk, she floats. Anyone who has seen her will know exactly what I’m talking about.

It is impossible to not notice her. Her style is a combination of 19th century Russia with a fifties vibe. The interesting thing is she mixes things up all the time which makes her fascinating to watch plus she’s not a slave to trends.

Her credentials are often scoffed at because she’s married to a billionaire, but you can’t buy style (see ‘Herve Leger loving’ billionairess Tamara Ecclestone).

Despite having a lovely head of hair, Ulyana has a fondness for unique headwear.

In the first look she’s quite the modern pilgrim, wearing a plaid maxi dress with a black peplum corset and a caramel felt hat. You could see that perfect pink pout from across the Jardin des Tuileries.

Ulyana accessorizes with a lot of scarves and berets, but my favourite look has to be her modern-day Eliza Doolittle look which she teamed with a Chanel Russian doll clutch.

Ulyana loves midi skirts. Prada is clearly her favourite brand, but she often opts for sheer and lace midi skirts as well as a floral-print skirt from her own Fall 2011 collection.

Her colourful or printed midi skirts are often paired with a simple, solid colour top.

Aside from her love of black and emerald green Prada satin clutches, Ulyana also loves Olympia Le-Tan clutches.

The handmade limited edition clutches provide a quirky touch to her look, which ranges here from ‘Little House on the Prairie’ to seductress to a modern day nun’s habit.

First comes midi, then comes maxi.

Ulyana loves floor-sweeping looks which elongate her slender frame.

Here, her maxis are teamed with her favourite things: a head scarf, another Olympia Le-Tan clutch and a top hat. The final look is, of course, the same Elie Saab dress we’ve seen on Sarah Jessica Parker.

It’s interesting that once again each look has a different theme.

The rest are my personal favourites. Her vibrant colourful dress is still a much loved Prada print which she teams with a Prada satin clutch and Christian Louboutin peep-toes.

Not many can get away with wearing a full-on gown in the daytime, but Ulyana looks stunning in this sheer creation on her way to a Chanel Couture show.

The terracotta chiffon dress is my favourite of all Ulyana’s looks. I love the black lace apron-like front panel, but it’s the accessories which really pull the look together. Her favourite satin Prada clutch and pink ankle boots with red buttons complete this chic look.

We never saw any of the Louis Vuitton Spring 2008 plastic nurse coats on the red carpet, unsurprisingly. Ulyana not only wears her plastic coat during fashion week, but she also wears the embellished black face mask as well.

Attention grabbing or stepping out of the box? I think a mixture of both.

Fellow Russian Natalia Vodianova has been very supportive of Ulyana’s debut collection.

Unlike many fashion designers, Ulyana did not study fashion design academically (she has a degree in Philology), but with her passion for clothes and attention to detail she decided to taking her interest in fashion further.

Her debut Fall 2011 collection and subsequent Spring 2012 collection are distinctly inspired by vintage and antique fashion, not only in their style but in their quality, craftsmanship and artistic value. You can view Ulyana’s Fall 2011 collection here and her Spring 2012 collection here.

Some truly stunning looks in this style spotlight, particularly the ones which subvert a classic approach to dressing by injecting modern elements. As a result, her looks never really appear as though they are historical costumes. Some of Ulyana’s looks fall flat for me (such as the super-heavy leather coat, leather gloves and hat emsemble), but on the whole they are executed beautifully. Each look in the midi skirt section is impeccable and I agree that the terracotta and black lace dress is just stunning. Give me Ulyana over Anna Dello Russo and her conspiculously clownish and comical street style any day of the week.

“”Give me Ulyana over Anna Dello Russo and her conspiculously clownish and comical street style any day of the week.”” I’m in TOTAL agreement.

  3. lex December 19, 2011 at 11:25 #

Love it! And so much less predictable than Dita v. T. who, for me, never surprises. Off topic but just curious, anyone know how old Ulyana is?

  11. Emi December 19, 2011 at 12:59 #

Interesting style, but sometimes it’s too much, in one of the photos she reminds me Mary Poppins, but she totally works designer’s outfits.

  12. mm December 19, 2011 at 13:16 #

I love style spotlight. The plaid dress with top hat is my favorite. She really shines in all the photos so photogenic. The root had some great pics backstage of her recent show http://buro247.ru/events/photo-reports/4061.html

      thanks for this.

      I love these pictures

  13. Mario December 19, 2011 at 13:56 #

Ulyana is definitely one of the my favorite style icons ever. I first fell in love with her when she wore the LV plastic coat and mask. I saw a photo of her retouching her makeup (in style, she had an YSL powder/mirror box) with the mask on and I was like: Who is this woman? I think I’m in love! And I’ve been actually ever since that day.

  14. dee December 19, 2011 at 14:03 #

WOW!!! Thanks so much for posting this Style Spotlight! I am somewhat new to the world of fashion having grown up in a tiny Australian country town with limited internet access so I have never really seen any style like this, it is just a bit mindblowing to me. Ulyana is like no other and you are so right, money cannot buy style. The Eliza Doolittle is a favourite as is the second look of the maxi dress section. Thanks again FC, I really appreciate your work, I am learning so much and it is great :) X

Interesting Post. Aside from her choice of hats and face masks I like her style, it’s great to see someone working longer lengths.

*sigh* I wish I had a rich husband to so I could work on my wardrobe.

  18. EmmaWoodhouse December 19, 2011 at 15:42 #

Unspeakably gorgeous, chic, and so classically feminine with a twist. I am in awe of her style! GREAT POST, FC!!!!! :)

  19. mol December 19, 2011 at 16:48 #

How unique, this combo of 19th century Russian and the modern, I’m quite rivited by her style! Her beautiful face looks familiar so I guess I’ve seen pictures of her randomly, but it was a real treat to see all these looks put together in one post, thanks so much F.C. for doing this – brilliant!

    • Fashion Critic December 19, 2011 at 17:25 #

      Xxx thank you

  20. Tamia December 19, 2011 at 17:08 #

stunning and unique personal style but you spoilt me fc with the original style spotlight that being joanna hillman’s-nobody can touch her style, she is the most stylish woman in the world imo

    • Fashion Critic December 19, 2011 at 17:26 #

Joanna is still my fave too.

It like a celebrity sighting every time is see her a fashion week

    • artemis December 20, 2011 at 10:38 #

Agreed love Joanna too! FC what do you think makes Joanna so special (as you saw her in person..)except from her style of course ?because there is a bunch of well-stylish dressed people outhere but only few have that kind og impact…

      • Fashion Critic December 20, 2011 at 10:48 #

for me it is just her style

        • artemis December 20, 2011 at 10:54 #

Thank you for the answer :-)

  21. Taylor December 19, 2011 at 17:12 #

Always one of my favourite people to see in the fashion week and street style pictures. Love the individuality of her style.

  22. Hannah December 19, 2011 at 17:40 #

I love these style spotlights, you have such great picks of people, each one is better than the last! She is so beautiful adn her style is mesmerising, she is like the only person who could pull these looks off with such grace and ease.
Also I think that the dress she is wearing to the Chanel couture show is from the Chanel fall 2009 collection, because there were many sheer black maxi dresses, and the bow detail is the same as this jumper : http://www.style.com/fashionshows/powersearch/slideshow?designer=design_house22&iphoto=1231&origIphoto=42

    • Fashion Critic December 19, 2011 at 18:05 #

      yes could be

  23. Jones19 December 19, 2011 at 18:27 #

Wow thanks for this feature, such a gorgeous woman she is…a unique beauty and her style is amazing.

  24. Li December 20, 2011 at 10:56 #

Love her style! so unique and different! Who cares whether some other people doesn’t like her!

  25. anemone December 20, 2011 at 11:29 #

Wow … I saw the first picture, the one where you see her profile and the white collar, and expected her to be a beautiful, stylish woman … but hélas, no.
Not only do I think her so called style is ridiculous (she looks a lot like the crazy woman with the pram full of rags in my parents hometown), I really dislike her (fake?) lips and pout and think that her face looks really cheap. Money sure as hell can’t buy you style, it can buy you recognition though …

  26. Linda December 20, 2011 at 13:33 #

Oh, my gosh, I’m in LOVE! I didn’t know such a person existed! I love every single picture, plus she’s just beautiful too, so she has the whole package, talent, beauty, style. Very, very cool. Thanks for introducing her to us.

  27. Jessica December 21, 2011 at 23:10 #

Thanks for this- She first caught my eyer when her Fall collection debuted and I’ve been patiently waiting for more info about her since then. I’m so in love with her style- feminine and traditional, but in a very modern way. If that makes ANY sense. Love love love!

  28. Emma December 22, 2011 at 10:03 #

I’ve been watching her for a while, her style is impeccable! I love that she is bringing back the 50′s silhouettes and lady-like prints! They are so beautiful and elegant, unlike the spray-on, ripped-up, revealing and undignified clothing of the modern day generation. (I say this despite being 17 and officially considered a part of this generation!) I only hope that more people follow her style.

  29. d July 5, 2012 at 22:39 #

    shes amazing!

  30. Kelly July 18, 2012 at 20:59 #
