Very rarely do we retrogress back to the ’40s to derive beauty inspiration, but if ever there was a wartime look to repeat, rockabilly victory rolls absolutely gets our vote.
Made famous by voluptuous sex kittens of yesteryear, it’s no wonder modern-day pinup Katy Perry is at the forefront of this revival—also seen on the Fall 2011 Miu Miu catwalk.
Thing is, there’s good news and bad news about this one. The bad news? This architectural-esque look is anything but DIY for beginners, though the brave can follow this excellent step-by-step tutorial. The good news? As Madonna and Diane Kruger prove, it is simple to simulate.
While the ‘material girl’ leaves hair loose on both sides for a breezy bohemian style, and the German actress’s locks are neatly brushed for a more polished look, both versions are quick and easy to recreate—and a great way to reinvent curls that are a few days old.
Starting with soft messy waves, insert a short off-center part using your forefinger. With both hands, roll a large section of hair away from your face, securing mid-crown with a few small hair pins (we love Conair Styling Essentials Mini Pins, $6.99 at Amazon.com).
For a bit of volume in the front (like Madonna’s look), gently insert your fingertips into the roll and loosen and lift strands by wiggling your digits. For a cleaner look, à la Diane, brush the hair above both ears back and pin alongside the roll. —India-Jewel Jackson

Love it, I knew I was born in the wrong decade. Thanks for the awesome tips. I do wish Katy would get rid of the really tacky colour, its been done and re done too much.
I love this trend. I do a bit of a mix between Madonna’s look and Diane’s sometimes.
I actually like the pink on Katy Perry, but when you have that much root on such a different color, you really shouldn’t wear your hair up. It just highlights the brown roots all the way around her face – not good.
I actually like the grown-in roots with the pink–it makes it look more modern!
LOVE this. I wanna do this up like Hailee Steinfeld.
And I might mention here that the sunglasses all should get honorable mention too- Hailee and Madonna both.
I would love to try this and it sounds simple enough for me to handle. Thanks IJJ!
Warren Tricomi styled the sides of my hair like this for the runway finale of the Breast Cancer Alliance luncheon…Wish she pinned up the bangs!
