My New York Fashion Week – Highs & Lows

Here are a few highs and lows from my week during New York Fashion Week.

These are my top 11 looks from the shows I attended in no particular order, but the Zac Posen edelweiss gown was my favourite look from Spring 2012.

HIGHS

Top 5 Shows: Zac Posen (Glamorous Red Carpet Awards Season Gowns from Look 1 to 35), Oscar de la Renta (Big Gowns, Big Name Models, Big Hair), Prabal Gurung (The Christopher Kane of New York – Crazy, Sexy, Cool), J. Mendel (I Wanted Every Piece including the Shoes) and Preen (Pretty Pastels with an Edge).

Stylists: I met so many stylists including uber stylist/designer Rachel Zoe this season. Whether I have given their clients a good or bad reviews, they are appreciating what I’m doing which is really exciting.

Reunion With Twitter Buddies: For 6 months of the year I spend my time tweeting, retweeting and replying to messages from my fashionable friends across the pond. It’s always great to have a FW reunion. This season I met @PurseBlog for the first time after being a fan of her blog for over 3 years.

Edit Chauffer Driven Car: It was so refreshing not have to fight 200 fashion folk for a taxi after a show for just one day.

The Weather: They said it would rain all week but the sunshine held out until the last day, so it was strappy sandals every day.

theOutnet.com: For the second season in a row my friends over at theOutnet.com dressed me for New York Fashion Week. It’s always fun playing dress up in designer pieces.

Adding New Designers To My Schedule: This season I was very excited to add Victoria Beckham, Marc Jacobs and Luca Luca to my schedule.

Staying In An Apartment: This season I stayed in an apartment in New York. It was the best decision I ever made as I wasn’t awoken by room service who didn’t read the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign or the dude who wants to refill the mini bar at 9am when I’m trying to get some shut eye.

Alexander Skarsgård: I saw him at the Mulberry party. He is so hot that I couldn’t bear to look him in eye in fear I would faint.

Magnolia Bakery: Serve the best cupcakes and cheesecakes in the world.

LOWS:

Marchesa: There was only 1 low. Not being invited to the Marchesa show. They have every right not to invite me as not Anna Wintour or Tim Blanks, but as a huge supporter of the brand I was frankly devastated. Previous seasons I have run to the nearest Starbucks to upload the pictures on my blog. At this point I still haven’t looked at the collection on Style.com.

This season for me, was so boring , my favorite was oscar de la renta!(he surprise me a lot) and marchesa disappointed me because all the dresses looks the same (previous seasons) , and couple of them remember to me a givenchy couture. Your work was phenomenal like always. n_n

      Merci xxx

    • Linda September 18, 2011 at 15:35 #

Yes, your work was phenomenal. You open up a new world for people like me. I love the highs and lows section every year. I’m disappointed Marchesa didn’t invite you. Sorry to hear that.

      • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 15:59 #

thanks Linda. Always love reading your comments

Yeah usually I’m obsessed with the Marchesa collection… but this season… I only saw maybe two dresses… I guess everything happens for a reason.. it saved you the dissapointment

  2. Edson September 18, 2011 at 04:20 #

I love the Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung and Carolina Herrera dreses, i’m hoping to see them tomorrow at the emmys, Sofia Vergara would look great in the Zac Posen or the Carolina Herrera dress, and i would love to see Minka Kelly in the Prabal Gurung dress.
And i love your blog is the first page i open when i sit at my computer, you have a fan in Colombia (sorry my mistakes, i’m still learning english)

Another great year covering Fashion Week, thanks for sharing! Love hearing about the up close and personal experience.

  4. Lara J September 18, 2011 at 04:30 #

You’ve done such an amazing job keeping the rest of us in the loop about the amazing goings-on of fashion week. Thank you for all the effort you’ve put in for us!!

Running the risk of sounding like a gushing fangirl, your site makes my day and having the added bonus of seeing what your stylish self was dolled up in during NYFW was the icing on a freaking awesome cake.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 04:33 #

thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it…it’s a lot of hard work but so much fun

  5. katchimo September 18, 2011 at 04:40 #

Thank you so much for all the coverage and pictures! Chin up, Marchesa didn’t know what they were missing out this season anyway. :) Looking forward to Milan and Paris. Really hope you show us your outfits even without theOutnet’s clothes. We wanna see you dolled up!

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 04:43 #

Thanks…will keep my chin up xxx

  6. hanna September 18, 2011 at 04:44 #

its ridiculous for Marchesa to not invite FC. their brand exists solely based on red carpet appearances and obviously major sites like yours helps a lot in introducing Marchesa to a larger audience worldwide.

If they’re as niche as they say, then stop blindly over-sponsoring dresses to celebrities. have some class.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 05:08 #

      maybe next year….who knows :)

      • Jana Grnevska September 18, 2011 at 10:08 #

It’s not ridiculous. They might have had an administrative error or just had a small seating plan. Either way you cant judge them or tell them how to do business without knowing everything. And its not their fault celebs love their stufff.
Just like how FC gets pissed when we say stuff without knowing; Marchesa are prone to a mistake.

  7. molly September 18, 2011 at 04:58 #

I love what you wrote about Alexander Skarsgard….I would probably have the same reaction!
The shows were pretty boring this season with the exception of Zac Posen and Jason Wu. As far as Marchesa goes, you didnt miss much. Stunning as usual, but it was trypical Marchesa. I felt like I had seen all of those gowns already.
Im glad you had a good time, and thank you for all the great updates. :)

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 05:05 #

thanks Molly…its so exciting. LOOOOVE Zac Posen. I won’t be happy unless every piece gets worn :)

      • molly September 18, 2011 at 05:29 #

Same here. I usually like Zac, but this is the first time he has really blown me away.

  8. Kaz September 18, 2011 at 05:20 #

I had such an enjoyable week following your coverage and adventures – and dress ups! Thanks as always :) Looking forward to the next fashion weeks already… x

  9. Hannah September 18, 2011 at 05:34 #

I feel like overall I was disappointed this season but there are always the designers you can truly count on in NY. My favourites looks were the opening look at Christian Siriano, almost anything at Naeem Khan, look 27 and the last 4 looks at Jason Wu, number 26 and everything else at jenny packham, and looks numbers 1 & 6 at Philosophy. I have to say that I was also disappointed by Marchesa, the dresses weren’t as beautiful or out-there as they used to be, that mgiht be because it was a show but either way I just wasn’t as in lust as per usual. I am also upset that you didn’t get to go, give that you seem to live for the kind of beauty they create, btu perhaps it was because it was a show so less people were able to go? I sincerely hope that they change it back to how it was last season, as a presentation and with you in attendance. Also, with regards to Magolia Bakery, my boyfriend lives on 5th and I have heard that they are legendary! I wouldn’t have been able ot look Alex Skarsgard int he eye either, I cannot even imagine what torture it woudl have been like to be in such proximity to him! I hoep you enjoyed New York, I have to say that there are so many great red carpet choices that have walked on the runways this past week, so that is obviously a plus. Thanks for all your coverage, it has sounded so exciting! I hope you enjoy the next three weeks, and hopefully the Emmy’s will be good, I am super excited albeit axiously wincing at the idea of even more blogging, given all the amazing coverage you and Zarina have done in the last few hours let alone the last week, you must be so sick of it and frankly have serious finger cramps – Good luck!

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:09 #

      Thank you.

I wanted to start the Emmy with a clean slate hence the power blogging until the early hours this morning.

  10. Armaghan September 18, 2011 at 06:09 #

I truly appreciate what u doing in your weblog too. It’s Just amazing and Simple to the point.Thank you for all your efforts.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:11 #

Thanks. I like to keep it simple. No need to have a degree to understand or appreciate fashion :)

  11. Vidhya September 18, 2011 at 06:49 #

I die for that oscar de la renta dress… Its so beautiful.. wow.. great job on the coverage.. i couldnt read fast enuf to keep up with ur blogging.. awesome job.. to you too, zarina..

Thank you…much more to co e on Emmys night

  12. Alina September 18, 2011 at 07:25 #

Thanks for the coverage , FC ! Great as always.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:05 #

      My pleasure

  13. nyfashionista September 18, 2011 at 07:41 #

First and foremost you looked fantastic.
I especially loved your hair this season.
Like many of your posters voiced, the shows this year were just blaaah and unmemorable. You do an exceptional job,and I am so very proud of you…

Unlike you though ,every Fashion season I panic, I love NYC,live in NYC,but twice a year I get the hell up out of dodge.

Since I am one of the many hair suppliers to the some hairstylist ,the stress is beyond ridiculous.

I cannot even begin to understand how you get through this period with your sanity in-check.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:11 #

      Thanks for the compliment

  14. Teleholic September 18, 2011 at 08:32 #

Once again, FC, thank you for your hard work covering all of these shows. You rock and this site makes my day. Because of you and this blog, I’m going to pursue writing for the fashion section of the newspaper at the college I hope to get into *fingers crossed* and with luck, continue that in the future as well. Before this blog, I had no idea how to even pronounce some designer names, and now I know how to id (most) gowns. You’re amazing, FC, the epitome of what it means to do what you love and love what you do, and you have no idea what an influence you are to me. Thanks, again.

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:04 #

      Wow…that is truly amazing.

I feel I have learned so much too

Good luck with the writing. I hope it leads to big things for you x

  15. Leslie September 18, 2011 at 09:02 #

Hahaha I love what you said about Alexander. I wish I could meet him but I’d have to avoid him just as you did. (Faint or panting like a puppy, don’t know which is worst…)
My favorite shows were Jason Wu and J. Mendel and Band of Outsiders and Theyskens’ Theory and Jil Stuart and.. My God there was so many great shows !
You were lucky to be able to go, but you deserve it ;)

  16. Lo September 18, 2011 at 10:22 #

Don’t be sad FC about Marchesa. You should look at it on style.com. I attended and it was literally no more than 40-50 people tops (including assistants). Really really tight list of Snr only editors from top publications and major celeb stylists. That was all.
    Next time hopefully! X

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 11:01 #

      Hopefully x

  17. robbie September 18, 2011 at 11:18 #

marchesa was boring, surely as a designer you are meant to be creative and have a vivid imagination yet everything marchesa does looks the same, you could put SS pieces and mix them with AW pieces and no one would be able to tell the difference.

philosophy and zac posen were AMAZING!

  18. suyin September 18, 2011 at 11:31 #

fashion critic, i think everything you do is amazing! like seriously, your page is the first i check everyday – i love it! just a thank you and a note of appreciation for all the hard work you do, and i thought you looked soooo stylish everyday. i can’t believe you werent invited to marchesa – theyve made a real mistake in not inviting one of their biggest fans! keep up the amazing work :D

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 13:16 #

      will do honey :D

  19. noo September 18, 2011 at 11:44 #

perfect fashion coverage as usual from my favorite blog :D as for marchesa, they stuck to their repertoire of sticking every material in existence on an innocent gown! i feel like zac posen’s brand will be replacing marchesa in terms of celebrity favorite very soon, because the structure and drama is there but it’s always new and exciting!

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 13:16 #

Agreed I think Zac will rule the red carpet this awards season.

  20. vicky September 18, 2011 at 12:00 #

Thank you for all the hard work! Don’t know what I’d do without your blogg, probably miss most of the gems.
You’re doing an amazing job keeping everyone updated..
Good luck for LFW, MFW and PFW!! :-)

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 13:15 #

      thank you x

  21. CreoleLady September 18, 2011 at 13:13 #

I want to compliment you and Zarina for keeping us up to date on shows and red carpet appearances. What a great team and great coverage! BTW, I most enjoyed your posts on the pieces you wore from OutNet. You make a great ambassador. I went to the site to look for the pieces and found even more to tempt me to break my budget, lol.

Ps. That red Naaem Kahn is incredible and am still loving sunshine yellow, which makes that Herrera a standout for me as well.

  22. maria September 18, 2011 at 13:50 #

Glad you enjoyed fashion week!! A big thank you for making us feeling like we were there too!! Can’t wait for MFW !! :)

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 14:31 #

me too Milan is my favourite

  23. asherlev1 September 18, 2011 at 17:35 #

So sorry to hear about Marchesa. You’re basically the one that made me love their brand so much D: *hugs*

But I loved your Fashion Week coverage! My favorite show would probably have to be Prabal Gurung. I’m a sucker for purple, aqua and florals. So…I was a goner for that collection the second I saw it. XP

Gahhh that Zac Posen gown. *fingers crossed for someone to wear it soon* / I really like the Oscar de la Renta gown too, but I’m afraid in the wrong hands, it could go terribly wrong XP

  24. Emi September 18, 2011 at 19:51 #

FC, I don’t know why you haven’t been invited to Marchesa fashion show. They constantly uploaded photos on FB, which was quite nice from them. Honestly, since you feature lots of stars wearing Marchesa I think you deserved to be invited. I think that the collection is amazing, some dresses are so elaborated that I really think that Georgina and Keren are great and incredibly refined designers.
I hope you’ll get the invitation next season. Said that, I understand what you mean about A. Skarsgard, he’s incredibly gorgeous… lucky girl…

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 20:33 #

Skarsgard is all kinds of hot :D

  25. artemis September 18, 2011 at 20:21 #

You did an amzing job FC!!! :-)

    • Fashion Critic September 18, 2011 at 20:32 #

      thank you very much x

  26. Melissa September 19, 2011 at 02:10 #

As if the gorgeous dresses wouldn’t take your breath away, seeing Alex Skarsgard would certainly send you right over the edge to fainting, no doubt about it. Looking him in the eye wouldn’t be easy anyway given that he’s 6’4″ and it’s awfully hard to look up that high while hyperventilating. *wink*
