I asked for Abbie Cornish to go big for the W.E. Venice Film Festival Premiere and she didn’t let me down.
The Australian actress graced the red carpet wearing a breath-taking Atelier Versace Spring 2011 gown.
It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for.
I personally had it set aside for Penelope Cruz, but Abbie more than does this look justice.
The silk organza petals have a rich ombre effect which goes from black to deep purple.
Abbie dazzled in silver jewels whilst sweeping her hair over one shoulder.
Thanks to this film festival I can officially strike two Versace gowns of my red carpet wish list.

After Abbie wore Toni Maticevski to Cannes two years ago, I’ve fallen a little bit in love with her. This is so much better than her Elie Saab look. This collection has now produced three of my favourite red carpet looks of the year, after Fan Bing Bing wore two looks at Cannes.
As soon as I saw you update on Twitter she was wearing Atelier Versace, I dropped what I was doing and came to see this, and what a beautiful sight this is.
I’ve loved this gown since the moment I laid eyes on it, and have had a wishlist myself of who I wanted in there. While I didn’t see Abbie in it, she looks breathtaking in it. I thought Diane in Elie Saab wouldn’t be topped for me, but this ranks right up there. BDOTW worthy without a doubt.
Maybe it’s the angle but I’m not loving this dress on Abbie
It’s a gorgeous gown and as I’m not wearing size zero , I can say that it works really good on Abbie. She looks beautiful from head to toe.
Is anyone else disappointed. I loved the silhouette on the model and that makes the dress 10x better. On Abbie, whilst it looks nice, it looks like a normal strapless gown. Also, would it have killed it her to do have done something more with her hair, an updo would have been fine
yep i agree, really doesnt have the WOW factor on Abbie – it looses the fabulous silhouette that makes this dress. i’m finding this instantly forgettable which is a shame
Quite agree. And I’m fairly disappointed with her hair as well.
If I (or anyone here) had the chance to wear Atelier Versace we would have done something better than that. I know getting loaned couture is like buying milk to these stars, but I wish they would ‘fine tune’ the details
Yes, the hair is really disappointing. Should`ve been a gorgeous UPDO with a dramatic gown like this.
I totally agree. Maybe it’s the angle.
I can’t help but feel that Abbie has let the dress down.
I am disappointed too.
It’s beautiful , but not WOW.
+1 … the gown is soo gorgeous, but I am not blown away by it on Abbie. Maybe its the angle, like everyone else said. I think the hair is not right – it makes it seem casual and the gown loses its pouf at the bottom.
It does not have as much va va voom as it should. She should have done something different with her hair as well.
She looks beautiful.
The dress looks beautiful on the model but completely loses its shape on Abbie. Too bad.
8 looks down 5 to go… Off the top of my head, I would say Marisa Tomei for this look. Emma Stone also pops to mind. But then again emma’s look would be http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FW86_jO7k_A/TUtIIx4EAFI/AAAAAAACVC4/Ced6UUYMhXg/s1600/Versace%252B1.jpg
I like your thinking
Not loving it
She looks a little like a saloon girl–I think it is the corset. She just never sells me in a gown
Wow, my prayers’ve been listened too FC
great festival for making dreams come true
She’s not the person I wanted to see in this gown, but I’ve been waiting so long, it doesn’t matter anymore lol. She looks great but the hair could have been better.
Even though I am mising the volume and I was never that crazy about this dress or this collection (I would have loved her in Vittoriana’s dress if Vittoriana had not just worn it) I just saw Marisa Tomei’s look, and Icannot help but imagine that Abbey is not smiling, but laughign at how much more faulous she looks than Tomei.
I’m wondering where Andrea Riseborough, who plays Wallis Simpson, is? I’m not so much in love with this look on Abbie, Rebecca Z’s comment that she looks like a saloon girl seems spot on. Her hair only accentuates that idea.
oopps – Andrea came on whilst typing the above – and she looks gorg!
I find that every time this collection is worn the amazing silhouette is never present. It’s so disappointing
The dress looks a bit flat and so does her hair. I like the mermaid shape of the runway version and I really don’t like her hair.
I’m very glad that we get to see another Atelier Versace dress on the red carpet and I really want to like Abbie Cornish in it, but I feel like something’s missing. Maybe it’s the angle from which the photo was taken, but I feel her look is too plain and she could have added some jewellery, mostly a bracelet. Also, it looks like she didn’t do anything special to her hair, while the gown needs a more delicate hairdo.
The dress has lost all of its ‘wow factor’ on her. It looks ordinary.
J’adore
WOW! I thought I’d be the only one disappointed by this, FC!!!!
An ATELIER VERSACE dress deserves to be worn right and Abbie is just not doing it.
And seriously, where is the volume of that skirt ??????????????
She is missing an updo, a fabulous necklace with matching earrings and some serious VERSACE attitude to go with this look.
Think she looks superb..love the dress!
BDOTW contender?
She looks gorgeous but I don’t like the corset of the dress.
She’s ruined the dress for me. I hate to say it but she’s too big for it.
looks sooooooo good on the model but on abbie it looks like a “good” knock off.
It’s somehow boring to me.
Immensely better on the runway.
