I nearly passed out when I saw Tilda Swinton on the cover of W Magazine’s August issue.
The queen of androgyny sent shivers down my spine with her captivating editorial which was shot on a futuristic Icelandic landscape by photographer Tim Walker.
She graces the cover wearing a Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2011 silk velvet tuxedo and silk blouse designed by Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti.
He captures Tilda wearing many looks including Blumarine, Céline, Chloé, Zero + Maria Cornejo and Comme des Garçons.
Tilda portrays an albino alien who fell to earth, reflecting W’s current fascination with androgyny and men’s uniforms.
In the issue Tilda talks about what it was like playing the mother of an evil child, androgyny and she shares what she really thinks about Hollywood.
Extracts are below, but you can read more at wmagazine.com.
On her own style icons: “David Bowie—whom I’ve been orbiting ever since I saw The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976—and my father, Maj. Gen. Sir John Swinton. They are individuals with whom I share the same planetary DNA.”
On gender role play: “People talk about androgyny in all sorts of dull ways. Cahun looked at the limitlessness of an androgynous gesture, which I’ve always been interested in.”
On her father’s military officer uniforms: “From childhood, I remember more about his black patent, gold livery, scarlet-striped legs, and medal ribbons than I do of my mother’s evening dresses. I would rather be handsome, as he is, for an hour than pretty for a week.”

FC, thank you! this piece sent shivers down my spine. It reminds me once again how powerful, beautiful and haunting the art of fashion can be … something that gets lost sometimes in the daily shenanigans of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian & Co.
totally agreed…this is some very high quality art, breathtaking and frightening!
My thoughts exactly! Terrifying, beautiful, stunning, bold and provocative. What a wonderful photo shoot. Not just high fashion but high art too.
I ADORE Tilda.
I don’t think anyone but Tilda would attempt this… or succeed at it. Wow.
Ooooookay! It’s Michael Jackson on the cover…
But any-who, she’s fierce. What more can one say?!
Wow.
This woman can teach the girls of Top Model a lesson or ten.
holy wow. this is an amazing shoot. absolutely no complaints from me. just… wow.
Now this is a very modern and forward approach to an editorial and Tilda Swinton totally deserves one! Love it.
I really like Tilda’s style. Always a breath of fresh air on the red carpet.
creepy
now this is what is called OUTSTANDING !
I feel a little lame for gasping at anythiing but I just did when I saw Tilda in the Armani jacket. Amazing, amazing shoot!
Jacob Kjeldgaard styled it, btw.
I have to say this does nothing for me. I can see it as art photography (that is not my taste) but it doesn’t speak to me as fashion. there is nothing here I want to wear or emulate. Just my (no doubt) narrow opinion.
WOWWWWWWWWW !!! This is by far the best photoshoots ever done in the history of fashion ( I might be exaggerating …) but I found it extremely artistic. The poses, the background, the colors, the style and of course Tilda’s majestic attitudes. The is exactly why fashion is considered in itself as a piece of art. Chapeau to the photographer
I am fast becoming a big Tilda Swinton fan. She rarely does the diva look, but she always owns the camera. In any movie I’ve seen her in, she’s always the character I can’t help noticing. I love her look.
The shot with her in the Giorio Armani jacket is so beyond my favorite – I would happily add this photo to my own photography collection (which includes work by Claude Cahun, the surrealist photographer from the thirites that Tilda mentions as partial inspiration for this shoot – ohhhh yes, this whole shoot makes me happy, so beautifully done and why I love fashion!)
@Rebecca Z: Amen! I share your sentiment.
Tilda is weird looking woman, but photographers seem to like to make her look even weirder. If they shot her as a human instead of an “alien”, she’d look better. Just my opinion.
My favorite is the latex dress and coat.
She really is an alien, isn’t she? Just hypnotic.
Each photo is like Sci Fi Artwork. I just got my W today pics even better in print
This is extraordinary. I’ve never seen anything like it. I absolutely love it.
Oh my God, nothing makes my heart race like Tilda Swinton! She is so incredible, I really have no words to describe her. The onl thing that would make me love this more is if she dyed her hair back to ginger, and if the armani photo had been the cover. Easily the best editorial of the year, at least celebrity-wise. This may even be better than when she was in AnOther.
So tall! So fierce! She’s such a gorgeous, fascinating creature, and damn she can work a camera.
I love how she soooo her self.
i wanted to say she has taken risk! But she really an andrgene looking woman. Who prefers and keeps the mystery going…style Lennox today!
but this is she!
and i love her destroyed looks…..am fan of these photos also!
thx FC for featuring these great photos
I’ve totally enjoyed it how refeshing! xxxxx
wow… sh’s perfect… my favourite photos are the ed dress andpictureno 7… and i love tild for always doingsomething different
Amazing!, you say that it is “shot on a futuristic Icelandic landscape” do you know if it was actually shot in Iceland?
this is definetely an interesting editorial. the cover is INCREDIBLE!
I really enjoyed this article – thanks for posting! The photography and the setting are fabulous! Tilda is fabulous!!!!!
love her forever. her eyes are seriously amazing
this makes me want to actually go out and buy the mag <3
This is freaky! I appreciate her desire to step outside of the boundaries, but nothing in this pictorial is pretty or interesting to me.
HER EYES.
I know celebrities, actresses, etc have taken over the model’s place in magazines. Here I donot complain. She has her own style, much different of all those cookie cutter beauties.
I have kicked and hollered about this spread for 13 minutes straight…..TIlda slayed the dragon with this. LOVE!!!
Wow … powerful and stunning! She’s a dream for all the designers who design for the craft and the theatrics rather than the wearability. She makes celebrity designers look like a bunch of jesters. But ok … I’m not against retail success, for it pays the bills after all.
wow…..just…WOW..
