This time last year we had just been officially introduced to the wonderful Fan Bing Bing.
The Asian beauty opted to wear a traditional robe to the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival like she did last year.
Her red gown was embroidered with white cranes with a bow detail on the bodice.
The gown was designed by her stylist – Chris Bu Kewen.
I don’t think Fan Bing Bing knows subtle, which is why I love her.
This dramatic red gown was paired with a high bouffant, stunning Cartier jewels and a pearl embellished clutch.
Hopefully Fan is at Cannes for the duration as I can’t wait to see what else she gives us.

her hair is scary
I think that is style
This is a traditional Chinese hairstyle, mostly used in Tang Dynasty. I’m pleasantly surprised with it
Both this dress and her hairstyle are classic Tang Dynasty style. The dress needs such a hairstyle to match itself.
thanks for the clarification
i’ve seen pictures of Tang Dynasty fashion before but i never thought of that with her hair because usually they wore accessories in it!!!!
this look is so gorgeous. I love the cut of the dress, the colour, the embroidery and all her accessories.
Oh I love her too!
I can already feel that Fan Bing Bing is going to be one of my faves at Cannes once again!
The Fashion at Cannes puts the MET to shame! Fan is Outstanding!
TO-TALLY
true! MET was kind of disappointing and meh.
Absolutelly agree. Go drama queen Fan
Gorgeous.
Divine! I think she looks even better than she did last year!
Fan Bing Bing looks beautiful! But those are cranes not swans on her dress
ta x
I take it back… this is BDOTW…. Fan is flawless…. love love love!!!
Not a fan of the hair, but LOVE the dress.
Ditto
Me too. That hair is no, but the dress is so much win.
This is unbelievably perfect!! BDOTW …scratch that BDOTY worthy for sure.
Amazing and dramatic. No one could pull this off like Fan can.
Now THIS is how you werk it. I ADORE her, she looks fabulous, note perfect, chic, glamorous and classic. In love with everything.
She looks amazing!!!!! The dress is so beautiful and theatrical. It is going to be a hard decision on the best dressed of the day!
‘Theatrical’ is the perfect descriptor of this, and while others don’t like her hair, I think it fits in with the whole dramatic flair of it all – she’s always so excitingly entertaining!
I agree. Bouffant hairdos are dangerous hairstyles (just think of SJP a few days ago), but Bing totally owns this one. The hairstyle, the dress, the jewellery, not to mention the make-up: everything is gorgeous.
Very theatrical and OTT, which make it perfect for the event. It’s also true to her personal style, which I always admire.
is that Cranes?
Ok, the dress is beautiful and it’s nice from her to pay homage to her country… but her hair is totally awful!!
exactly!
Totally agree. Fan in her Dragon Robe gown from last year’s Cannes Film Festival made it into my Top 10 gowns of the year but I just can’t drag my eyes away from that frightening hairstyle and that super-harsh make-up. This is veering way too close to drag queen territory for me. Such a shame, because the dress is divine.
outstanding. now i can’t decide if i prefer the dragon robe or this one.
FC — if you were to have a Fan Bing Bing alone best dressed poll, I don’t know how I could choose between the crane dress and the dragon robe! Both are wonderful!
I would go for the Dragon robe…East meets west
I love the gown… But dont like the hair or her makeup… Her eyebrows look scary
I like the look but the hair is a big no
I love her from the very first start~ she is just more than just outlook, as years passed now people praise her for this Chinese characteristic show, however she is always a cute, and hardworking young girl.
Girl won’t let us down. This is what I’d expect from her, knowing her for a year here in your blog, another string of amazing looks, I hope.
She’s unafraid of trying trying unexpected looks.
The crane dress has a similar connotation as the dragon dress last year. In China, there’s an idiom called “he li ji qun,” or “like a crane standing amongst chickens.”
that means the best!
yes,I’m surprised at your mention of Chinese idiom, which is used very properly here..
put fan besides gong li…..hummmm who is more gorgous? hard one
gong li for me!
did Fans MET invite get lost in the mail? Anna has to be blind to not have invited her as she is such a fashion plate and she would have work glad to see fan has her mojo back after not being so sure with her past two outings this blows me away
Fan is outstanding!!! She is gorgeous!!!
Love her hair!!!
The hair is kind of scary when looking at it for long periods of time (not by choice i was trying to determine if i liked it). She is so beautiful and elegant and i felt she pulled of the look extraordinarily.
Dragon robe was amazing, but this one just didn’t work for me.
Fan Bing Bing and her makeup artist together designed this red Crane dress! Fabulous!
thanks for the info
i am so excited about what she would wear in the following days, that makes her special from the other stars.
Am I the only person who doesn’t mind the hair? I feel like she always goes for the dramatic hair but she always works it well.
Also, I’m pretty sure I see elements of the Tang Dynasty style in her dress (especially in the bow and the train). Ugh, this makes me love her even more (if that’s possible!)
I like the hair too
Very beautiful!
There are brand ambassadors, and there are fashion/culture ambassadors. Fan shows how beautiful and interesting the oriental culture is. LOVE the embroidery.
Typical Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty style: crane, towering plate made, lanterns, made it kind of grace and luxury.
She looks so different to everybody else with this Asian inspired gown. I love the knock out scarlet colour, red of course meaning good fortune. The hair and makeup are making a strong statement, but this is needed to balance the impact of the gown.
Oh, she’s never disappointed me!! I DO LOVE this look.
the white Red-crowned crane is the symbol of long-life, elegance and peace in Chinese culture, also used to describe beautiful people and long-time love. Whereas dragorn is the more masculine, used to describe the power of the emperor . So Chinese criticism said she was more like a queen tried not to be too ambitious, just have hun and relaxed .
FC! do you want to kown the designer of this gown. which is designed by fan bingbing’s dresser . exactly BDOTW!!! as perfect and stunning as dragon gown
MAJOR,Fan always exudes glamour, class, fun and drama…its always a joy to see her.
Perfect !
It’s very beautiful.perfect.love fan .
love you,beautiful
LOOOOOOVE.
The dress is designed by Bo Kewen, her stylist. I think this BDOTY for me.
It’s great! But I’m bored seeing her with this kinda look…
I think she is too affected. And her make-up has never changed.
AMAZING!!!
A total hit
Oh my gosh !! She looks so fascinating with that marvelous dress <3
Love most of her choices of wardrobe but she needs a different makeup and hair stylist.
Gorgeous! I like her,the dress,the bag.
