Cheryl Cole In Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg & Burberry Prorsum – The X Factor US Auditions

In the manner of Chelsea Handler, “What…a hot mess.”

I haven’t used that term in a long while, but Cheryl Cole looked frightfully and uncharacteristically bad as she made her way to the first round of auditions for ‘The X Factor’ at the Galen Center in LA yesterday.

I don’t know if this a case of trying too hard, or not trying hard enough, but this look leaves me cold considering how cute she looked during auditions in the UK.

Cheryl has the right intentions by wearing American brands to appeal to her new American audience.

She wore an Oscar de la Renta ruffled silk top, with Diane von Furstenberg Simca stretch-cotton pants.

As styled by

The British star added a Burberry Prorsum patent leather belt for a touch of Brit spirit.

Whilst colour-blocking is on trend, the two things that kill this look for me are as follows:

The Pants: They are too long. I don’t understand why people like to wear pants that drag along the floor like that.

The Belt: I really don’t like the turquoise with the orange and purple. It was one colour too much in this look.

What do you think of Cheryl’s first X Factor US look?

Paula Abdul is the second female judge.

She also arrived wearing purple opting for a YSL draped silk-satin dress with YSL Tribute sandals, as she cozied up to Simon Cowell for the photocall.

It will be very interesting to see how the dynamics of this relationship work. Cheryl and Paula are both used to being Simon’s favourite.

Being Simon’s favourite all depends on where you sit. Sharon Osbourne was moved from sitting next to Simon, for Dannii Minogue, who was then moved down for Cheryl Cole.

I wonder who’s got the hot seat this time.

I actually like this with the exception of the hair and length of the pants. I really love Cheryl’s casual/street style.

  2. kbs May 10, 2011 at 13:06 #

    Awful. Cheap.Tacky.Desperate.

  3. shalone May 10, 2011 at 09:10 #

i’m okay with her 70’s big hair but the gucci outfit look ill-fitting. aah so dissapointed.

  4. imam May 10, 2011 at 09:05 #

    it’s so GUCCI…

‘I don’t know if this a case of trying too hard, or not trying hard enough.’
Believe me, I laughed for a good five minutes looking at this line. It’s always a pleasure to read good critics like this. Well done, FC!

      thank you xxx

  6. LizLemooooon May 9, 2011 at 19:31 #

LOL she’s hilarious. This is just like when Posh Spice first got hugely famous for her ‘style’ and she was just a tacky, new money mess but then slowly became more groomed and restrained and chic. Cheryl sometimes gets it right but she’s too interested in trying to impress everyone so she looks over the top and tacky.

  7. Giuseppi May 9, 2011 at 19:27 #

I honsetly love this. I think everyone is going to question my eyesight for saying that, but I love it. It’s so 80s and a little OTT and I love the color scheme. That big, big hair- I just love this.

  8. TinaCZ May 9, 2011 at 19:04 #

Cheryl probably lost her sense of style or hired a damn bad stylist. What a mess.

  9. Courteney May 9, 2011 at 17:41 #

The top is cute but the belt just doesn’t go with those colors. I think she may be in for some stiff competition to be the favorite because zany Paula is well liked here in the US and is Simon’s favorite since he’s known Paula longer.

  10. Fee May 9, 2011 at 17:35 #

The pants definitely are too long but as someone else said, it’s not just the length but the whole fit. They don’t fit her at all.

I actually think if the pants fit better that this could have been an ok look…but for the hair. My God The Hair!! To be fair I don’t think there is an outfit alive that could survive that.

  11. Kimmy May 9, 2011 at 17:16 #

    This is so Gucci.

  12. moja31 May 9, 2011 at 16:52 #

eh the strangest thing about this look for me, is the sister wife-esque pouf she’s rocking on top of her head. the gold belt as styled for net-a-porter works better with this look, but i can see why she wanted to switch that up for daytime.
upon a second look, those pants are not doing good things for her legs, she somehow managing to both drown in them and look a little thick in the thighs.

  13. robbie May 9, 2011 at 16:48 #

oh sweet jesus! the poor girl is colour blind, that has to be the only excuse for such a hideous outfit. i love colour but damn this is just like something from old episodes of charlies angels. oh and the hair WOW, just wow.

  14. Alina May 9, 2011 at 16:48 #

    God! This is awful.

  15. GorgeousSpice May 9, 2011 at 16:09 #

maybe she is deliberately dressing badly so american audience will progressively like her as her style improves.

    • Fashion Critic May 9, 2011 at 16:11 #

If only that ere the case

  16. olivia May 9, 2011 at 16:04 #

she looks like a hippie Barbie doll with that hair! What the hell was she thinking??! I can’t even find the word to describe how horrible she looks

  17. anne May 9, 2011 at 15:28 #

Trying too hard unfortunately…I don’t know why but i still have a soft spot for her :)) it may be a case of VB but i’m always rooting for her to blow me away with something (even though i don’t keep my hopes up cause that ship has sailed sometime during the audition for last year’s XF). Funny thing is that being naturally beautiful she could easily go for the minimalist Calvin Klein look and guarantee a good look than taking all this risks that don’t pay off.
I’m pretty sure she’ll be standing next to Simon.

  18. Kaylie May 9, 2011 at 14:12 #

She looks like country music singer Shania Twain when she was in her glory during the early 90’s. I don’t mean that as a compliment.

    The hair…….. *shudders*

  19. Caitlin May 9, 2011 at 13:47 #

    Two things.
One, if you’re going to attempt Gucci’s take on colour blocking, wear freaking Gucci.
Two, the pants make her thighs look chunky, and that is an insane feat.

  20. Voguette May 9, 2011 at 13:35 #

    lol, tragic

  21. Rachel May 9, 2011 at 13:05 #

For me it was the pants and the hair. Had she opted for a slick pony tail with a good pant length and this would be a nice look. The belt could be better, but I don’t hate it.

  22. aiyu May 9, 2011 at 12:44 #

I love the top but the pants don’t fit.
The colour combinations and the hair….overkill

  23. shevelle May 9, 2011 at 12:40 #

I actually was shocked at how BAD Cheryl looks her! She is wearing thousands of pounds worth of designer clothing and she looks like she had just step put of Lipsy. BAD, BAD, BAD!

  24. Lee Ann May 9, 2011 at 12:40 #

I think she was influenced by the colour blocking seen at Gucci but the turquoise is the wrong blue. As for the rest of the outfit.. …….

  25. Alexandra May 9, 2011 at 12:19 #

i shudder when i saw this picture and all i could think was “what the hell is this?” was she caught up in a hurricane that messed up her hair AND smashed every mirror in her surroundings?

    • Leti May 9, 2011 at 13:34 #

LOL. Truly she looks like an utter fashion victim and the hair is way to big. Whoever thought Paula Abdul would be photographed making a public appearance and not be the tragic one?

  26. Elle May 9, 2011 at 12:08 #

Seriously the pants look SO unflattering on her!! They’re too long AND weirdly-fitted around her hips. I actually like the colour scheme though, but wish she had opted for a better outfit combo and went easy on the hairspray.

  27. Ashley May 9, 2011 at 12:08 #

    I actually like it….. Weird

  28. justme May 9, 2011 at 11:47 #

Forget about the length, her pants are incredibly ill-fitting around the hips area. As you say, the belt’s color is bad. And what is really going on with that hair?
    A hot mess indeed!

    • artemis May 9, 2011 at 12:14 #

Agreed! I don’t think that the problem is the color of the belt but the style of the belt!..It just doesn’t work with the outfit! One word ! BAD!

    • KateS May 10, 2011 at 02:55 #

A very hot mess. I agree that the fit of the pants is a major problem here, but the hair and belt can’t be ignored.

  29. Elaine May 9, 2011 at 11:33 #

I think if these trousers were tapered peg leg style this would have been a nice look. Still on the fence about the addition of the belt

  30. kate mccarthy May 9, 2011 at 11:32 #

love cheryl and she does seem to have fun with her clothes but this is a no from me, she looks like a cross between velma and daphne from scooby doo!

    • Fashion Critic May 9, 2011 at 11:49 #

LOL @ cross between velma and daphne from scooby doo

      so very true

      • Manja May 9, 2011 at 12:30 #

        so true

    • seggie May 9, 2011 at 13:32 #

LOL !! she does so much yeah!!!
She also look like a caricature of yourself from the x factor auditions in the UK back in June 2009!
While I like the colours minus the belt, this look is a joke!
Does she still have 3 stylists? If she does, they might need a pay rise or the sack…

      • Fashion Critic May 9, 2011 at 13:42 #

not sure on this occasion. It would be costly to take all 3 to the US.

I think this is a new local stylist or she styled herself.

If you click on the link to the DVF pants, you can see that Net A Porter have selected the Oscar de la Renta top in their “Wear It With” section.

I think she styled herself, proving that she has no natural style of her own.

        • seggie May 9, 2011 at 13:49 #

OMG!! Yes you are so right!! She took it from the Net-A-Porter “wear it with”… now she totally has exposed herself and I’ve lost all respect! Who called her a style icon already? 😉

        • Caitlin May 9, 2011 at 14:01 #

@Fashion Critic ouch! But deadly accurate.

        • Iris May 9, 2011 at 14:05 #

gosh yes — and it says wear with turquoise shoes — she just replaced that with a belt — and look where it got her!

  31. alannah May 9, 2011 at 11:28 #

i agree the belt was one step too far, but im loving the colours otherwise (if only she’d hemmed those pants!)
    but her hair is amaaazing.

  32. Marvel May 9, 2011 at 11:25 #

I really like the look. I love the combination of the colours but wat soesnt work is the hair. It looks beyond terrible. Im not that fussed about the pants but the hair ruins it for me.

Judging bythe pics, it looks like Simon has already picked his favourite.

    • Fashion Critic May 9, 2011 at 12:40 #

lol…I think you might just be right 😉

  33. Martin May 9, 2011 at 11:14 #

For me, this is a case of Cheryl trying WAY too hard. Obviously someone has given her the colour block memo but she has proven that this is exactly the way not to do it.

The pants, quite frankly, look cheap and she is doing them absolutely no favours by wearing them so long. The silk ruffled top is probably the best element of this look but tucking it into those pants and teaming it with that completely unnecessary belt just makes her look ridiculous.

I’m thinking that perhaps she didn’t pay much attention to the bottom half of her outfit because she would be filmed seated during the auditions? Or that’s what I’m hoping, because otherwise I have no other explanation for this complete aberration. Total fail.

  34. Mayu May 9, 2011 at 11:13 #

about the pants, yes, they are too long for her. but i love it!
her hair is a little bit too big, but this 70’s look is lovely for me.
and the colors of purple and orange remind me of GUCCI s/s.

  35. Gaber May 9, 2011 at 11:10 #

Cheryl looks like Eva Longoria on a bad hair day.
I adore the idea behind this look, but the execution is insanely poor.

  36. kim May 9, 2011 at 11:05 #

i actually quite like it. She doesn’t look boring and the colors do match. Fresh and modern, love it.
