On Monday Cameron Silver from Decades Inc. invited me to tag along as he prepared to make his grand entrance on the red carpet at the 2011 Met Gala with his friends.
I met them at The Carlyle Hotel in New York which wasn’t too far from the venue.
In the lobby I saw many guys in dark black suits carrying garments bags, no doubt they were delivering to other Met Gala attendees staying at the hotel.
Cameron opened the door wearing a bright blue Jil Sander suit with a yellow shirt, taking his cues from this season’s colour blocking trend.
After laying out his Alexander McQueen Fall 2011 suit which Sarah Burton herself had loaned him especially for the occasion, we all had a glass of champagne to toast the occasion.
Mary Kuusisto had two choices on the night. In the end she opted for a beautiful gunmetal grey Temperley London Jaden silk-satin gown. Her homage to Alexander McQueen was showcased via a stunning gold leaf detailed clutch with a skull clasp. Yes it is as heavy as it looks.
Stephanie Carter is one of the funniest women I have ever met. We all kept telling her that she needs her own TV show. She opted for head-to-toe black wearing a Martin Grant gown which has a Swarovski embellished waistband. She teamed her gown with a black clutch and sparkling Miu Miu heels, which she had just purchased from Barney’s that afternoon.
She shared that she knew Anna Wintour would not be happy with her for wearing all black, but I’m guessing Anna would’ve been distracted by Stephanie’s stunning 50s vintage gold diamond encrusted bracelet.

Julie Maclowe wore a romantic Alexander McQueen gown from the designer’s final collection. It was the first time I had seen this gown up close. The details on the bodice are exquisite. Julie shared that this was one of her smaller gowns. Usually she goes much bigger. In one quick movement, her train was in her arm as she made her way to the bar. I could tell she had done that many times before.
Julie Stemerman looked beautiful wearing the Alexander McQueen bustier gown we saw Mila Kunis wear to the 2011 SAG Awards. She teamed her colourful dress with a McQueen clutch and a diamond necklace.

We all went down to the bar where we spotted many celebs and supermodels. Dasha Zhukova was hanging out in one corner with Miuccia Prada. Russian supermodel Sasha Pivovarova was wondering around looking for someone wearing a silver strapless Herve Leger dress. I spoke to Isabel Lucas who told me she was wearing Louis Vuitton, but she was unsure who designed her headpiece.
Cameron, Stephanie, Mary and I headed to the venue in a town car. As we got closer we saw many celebs and socialites abandoning their cars due to the traffic and start walking the remaining short distance to the Met.
I saw Amanda Brooks arrive wearing a beautiful cocoon Giambattista Valli dress. Coco Rocha also walked to the Met in her navy Alexander McQueen gown. Alexa Chung arrived with Christopher Kane who designed her dress.
I was in my element identify dresses and gowns on the sidewalk from the town car much to Cameron’s amusement.
When we finally arrived there was a sea of people.
I was surprised at how narrow the red carpet was considering there are so many gowns fighting for train space.
At the entrance there were publicists and PRs waiting for their clients to arrive before they made their way to greet the world’s media.
I was able to hang out in this area for a short while to observe the organised commotion.
Leighton Meester arrived with her stylist Logan Horne, Donald Trump arrived with his wife and was royally booed by the crowd which he seemed to actually enjoy.
Ryan Seacrest (who is really short; bless him) arrived with Julianne Hough who told me they were both wearing Burberry.
Bradley Cooper arrived with his mum and Jason Bateman.
Before I fainted at the double dose of hotness on the red carpet, Christina Ricci swept passed me arm in arm with Zac Posen. At this point after only seeing a few gowns, I knew this was the one to beat.
Turned out my feeling was right.
Christina is tiny.
Probably the most petite woman I have ever seen, but she worked her Zac Posen couture like a 6 foot supermodel.

Aw its so nice to hear real life encouters with some famous people and it sounds like you had a blast FC.
Was Ricci you Best Dressed?
Yes it was amazing. I throughly enjoyed the experience.
Christina was my best by a long shot.
Sounds like a great experience. Nice to see it all through your eyes. Any pictures of you? Would love to know what you wore.
No…I was only there as an observer
i love this post! love cameron’s mcqueen jacket!
Thank you…I will send you some pics for your site.
Thank you Catherine for making the PRE-MET prep as fun as the actual Party of the YEAR!
x
Cameron
thank you…I was happy to be your groupie for the night xxx
Thank you so much for this FC! I love your personal stories and encounters, they give fashion such an intelligent, intimate touch.
I am NO expert, but I don’t like the fit of that stunning McQueen gown on Julie Maclowe – and the styling. Something seems “off”, though I can’t quite put my hands on it.
Thanks again FC!
Thank you…it was wonderful joining in the excitement.
Usually it’s about midnight in London and I’m trying to stay awake in my PJs whilst hitting the refresh button on Getty
Wow…….Must have been nice! This is usually my favorite red carpet of the year, much, much, much better than the Oscar.
Did you also attend or just the red carpet? I am asking because this year for the first time ever I am wondering where all these people actually go to, what kind of event they are attending?!
No I didnt go in. I was an observer on the red carpet before rushing back to my friends apartment to blog.
I didn’t comment before (you kept the posts coming!), but I enjoyed your Met coverage. But I really, really love Behind the Scenes reveals. It’s neat to see the inner workings of the machine.
Thank you…I was an invaluable experience and I’m so glad I can share it with you guys.
I didn’t comment before either (ah that laziness), but I definitely enjoy your coverage of these events and I love how clean the posts are, it’s just so easy to browse when I want to look for something. I know exactly who, where and when, which I love!
Oh and your personal stories accompained with pictures are amazing as well, very nice to read.
thanks Mario xxx
This is so cool! Did you have chills run down your spine on seeing all the stars?
Next year, you should get to go as an attendee. Ask Cameron.
But how would I blog
Hire a minion to take your dictation!
I might be available…
lol cute x
Omg, so you were at the actual place AND managed to stay up all night blogging about the gowns as they came down the red carpet?!!! Hello, Fashion Superwoman!
Love the little behind-the-scenes sneak peek, thanks! x
LOL @ Fashion Superwoman.
Yes black pumps are my Kryptonite
You were in HEELS too?! Oh c’mon, now you’re killing me ahaha
lol
I have followed you since your Victoria Beckham blog days and look at you now, you are dropping names like coins at the laundromat (launderettes since you are from the UK) . Love it.
This really made me L.O.L.
I really liked this post! Looks like you had a great time in NY
Thank you for all your work, not only your Met coverage (which has been fantastic), but everything you do! You have a great site FC!
thank you. It would be great to do this more often, but being in London restricts me unfortunately
Like a dream!!!….funny, wonderfully intimate look into a magical world, I love these kinds of posts, thanks F.C.
you are welcome xxx
I think, there comes a time in everyones life where they pinch themselves to realize their luck and blessings and soak in every bit of the place they’re in.
This might have been that moment for you Catherine. No? Or more?
OMG SO LUCKY.
Also, that is ay fiiiiiine McQueen jacket!
Always such a pleasure going through your blog.
(A total secret btw- you were my inspiration behind starting my own blog, but of course, nothing compares).
Nothing beats the Vogue photoshoot, but this is my second best experience since I started blogging for sure.
Your blog is really cute btw x

You seem like you’d be such a fun person to sit down and have a cuppa with. I’m glad you love blogging as much as we enjoy reading it.
thank you.. glad you enjoyed it x
its so cool you got to be there!!!
i hope next year you can go in and are able to share with us more details of the night!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Christina looked so fierce in that dress… but how did she manage to maneuver herself around in it?? She’s so tiny.
I’ve gotten a lot of good dresses from Cameron over the years, including this one I recently wore: http://wendybrandes.com/blog/2011/04/what-wendy-wore-feeling-like-a-real-housewife/
Bravo!! Perfect coverage!! Loved every word!
Merci xxxx
Well that was a delight to read
Thank you!
How short is Ryan Seacrest – really? Now, don’t destroy a girl’s daydream here… I’m 5’10.
thank you.
I’m 5’11 and he’s way to short for me.
Just under shoulder height.
Thank you so much for your coverage, and of course for running this site. I enjoy visiting your website a couple times a day and I’m amazed that there are always new posts!
Even though you were an observer, did you wear anything special? I wanna know what you wore
You are welcome.
I just wore regular clothes..
*oops I pressed submit too early
Anyway, thanks again! xx

He did look very handsome. He’s such a sweet guy.
great…looks like you had an amazing time.thanks for sharing your experiences:)
my pleasure
Wow, what a fab ending to the wonderful coverage of the Met. I have also been really shocked when i see celebs in real life at how small they are in person.
I actually got tingles reading this post – partly of envy
but also because it’s great to see someone who has made such a success out of following a passion. I see you are featured in InStyle UK this month too!
I would kill to be at the Met Ball red carpet but as I’m way too lazy to even start a blog it will remain a dream
Well done!
Thanks Fee. I just picked up the InStyle yesterday and saw the column. It so cute x
Thank you so much for sharing the experience with us. And yes, Christina was the best dressed of the week, of the month and probably one of the best of the year when it ends.
my pleasure x
It’s always fun to read about your experiences. Your knowledge of fashion and quick eyes must have helped you uncover the designers they were wearing! Thank you for sharing
omg. i would certainly have fainted lol! Thanks again for giving us mortals a sort of behind-the-scene livve entrance vue. Sounds as an incredible experience, glad you had it…
