LACMA Presents ‘The Unmasking’ – Nicole Richie In Marchesa

Nicole Richie also attended the opening of The Lynda & Stewart Resnick Exhibition Gala held in LA at the LACMA.

She opted for a dramatic Marchesa Fall 2009 gown.

The black and white tulle gown with a wired edged embroidered detail is stunning, but I don’t think it works on Nicole.

I personally think she’s too short for this dress, as I prefer the length on the model.

I also think the dress has lost some of it’s puffiness.

Sorry but this gets a big thumbs down from me.

I agree that it is too long, not just overall, but the bodice as well. It’s too long and the waist ends up too low for the right silhouette.

This look is just plain sad.

I don’t like the dress period. The length of it is odd, and there’s waaaay too much going on. Especially for someone as tiny as Nicole.
The dress should have been shortened to knee length. A couple of layers of tulle removed along with the black bow at the waist and black embroidered strips. Keep the shoulder detail.

This is a statement dress and requires presence and stature to carry it off, both physically and personality wise. Ms Richie has neither and it totally overwhelms her. I adore the dress on the model but Ms Richie is swamped. It is too low in the waist and too long in the skirt. Also something has gone drasically wrong with the ribbon detailing – it looks like duct tape. Thumbs down indeed!

Although I adore Richie, I think she struck out here. The dress is the wrong length on her. I also think her Lindsay Lohan coloured hair dulls the drama of the dress – it would have worked far better with her dark tresses.

Strangely enough, I didn’t even notice the length until you pointed it out, but you’re totally right- it messes up the whole look for her.

  7. kimi September 27, 2010 at 20:50 #

True, indeed. If she was taller, it would have look nice. The dress and the bottom half of the dress just eats her. Also, if you could play with the black thing, why does it look so bland compared to the models?

Her make up is another factor. It looks ridiculous. And not in a good way.

What a mess. Everything is too flat; the ribbon, the tiers/layers and her hair. It reminds me of what my Christmas wreath looks like after 11 months of storage.

FC, you’re right. The proportions of this dress are not right for Nicole. But I don’t dislike this look completely.

1, it’s not typical flowy, Boho look that Nicole wears so much.
2, if Nicole didn’t wear it, I don’t know if a dress like this would get worn. And I’m happy she’s attempting something different.

Don’t love the hair and the eye shadow is atrocious.

I give Nicole credit for trying but toally agree with FC about the length and volume of the dress. The problem with getting it wrong with a dramatic gown is that when it’s not right it’s SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not right

This could’ve been magic but alas, it was not meant to be. Why was the dress not modified for her? she is swimming in it!everything should have been taken down by 15%. That said facially she looks lovely she is glowing. Love you FC X

      Thanks sweetie xxxxxx

What happened to the black wiry thingy? It looks awful on Nicole’s dress whereas it looks artsy on the model.

  12. Elaine September 27, 2010 at 17:04 #

maybe i’m a bit biased as a big Nicole Richie fan but am I the only one who loves this on her?!!

    • Fashion Critic September 27, 2010 at 18:37 #

      She love it too 😉

    • Tania September 27, 2010 at 23:18 #

I like it on her not love it but i’m bias too because I am a big fan also!

    • Linda September 28, 2010 at 01:02 #

I like it all right. Up close, the hair and makeup are very nice. Her skin is just glowing and the blue shadow is actually pretty cool up close.

  13. Reddy September 27, 2010 at 16:20 #

Shes to short… as usual when someone tries to wear something off the runway.

  14. gossip_bangkok September 27, 2010 at 16:10 #

I love the dress, but like you’ve said, it’s too long for her. I too, prefer the dress on the model. Plus, something’s wrong with the tied ribbons on Richie’s dress.

  15. Jolie September 27, 2010 at 16:02 #

    Very nice,

  16. Pati September 27, 2010 at 16:00 #

I like it on the model, but not on Nicole. I also think she´s too short to pull it off. As much as loooooove the skirt, I´m not so keen on that black ribbon- there´s too much of it… It ruins the look for me…

  17. Marvel September 27, 2010 at 15:59 #

The dress is interesting but it drowns her yet again size zero body.

  18. Anissa September 27, 2010 at 15:42 #

It’s so cute and fun that I want to like it. But I can’t on her. The length is all wrong and the details don’t look right (like the lay of the ribbons). It ends up looking like a Project Runway creation that’s almost there but they ran out of time so it fell kind of flat…

    • bettybrandenburg September 27, 2010 at 16:14 #

Well put! But you’ve got to give her credit for wearing something else but boho chic for a change…

  19. Nicole September 27, 2010 at 15:39 #

Despite her inability to pull off the dress, the dress itself is divine.

  20. Catriona September 27, 2010 at 15:20 #

I agree, the dress drowns her.

It would be really cute modified as a minidress on her

    • molly September 27, 2010 at 22:15 #

Thats exactly what I was thinking!
The runway version is so much better. I think some one like Blake Lively or Taylor Swift would have pulled this off so much better because they have great height for these kinds of dresses. Plus the black ducktape on the dress also looks really off on her.

  21. edoardo September 27, 2010 at 15:18 #

Every creation of Marchesa is so beautiful and amazing that seems that a godness design these dresses!!

  22. mm September 27, 2010 at 15:18 #

This is laughable. Is she changing her style. It looks so costumey on her. she ruin the dress

  23. Lee Ann September 27, 2010 at 15:16 #

sorry I meant to type exploded

  24. Lee Ann September 27, 2010 at 15:16 #

It looks like industrial tape expolded all over her. Awful
