Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Monthly Archives: May 2009

A few weeks ago, I interviewed Mr Elie Saab.

It’s stunning Couture gowns, like the ones he creates, which inspired me to start this blog.

The Lebanese designer most recently dressed Robin Wright Penn and Elsa Pataky for Cannes Film Festival, and continues to dress some of the most glamourous women in the world.

How would you describe the ‘Elie Saab’ Woman?
Elegant and glamorous.

What are your basic design principles?
To get the right cut of dress in order to highlight the woman’s figure at best, the woman should wear the dress and not the dress wears her.

Where do you seek inspiration?
It depends, anywhere I feel it, it could be a trip I make, an era in time, a movie..really anything can inspire me.

Do you have a muse?
Always the woman, an elegant woman with character.

Many stars attended the Mardan Palace Hotel opening in Turkey, which is Europe’s most expensive luxury resort.

Mariah Carey was one of the performers on the night.  She arrived on the red carpet, wearing a green striped Roberto Cavalli plunging gown.

Cavalli signature gold serpent seems to under a lot of pressure, keeping Mariah’s gown together.

I only say this because I’m jealous.

Monica Bellucci shows off her enviable figure, wearing a beautiful fishtail blush pink lace gown.

I like that she kept her make-up light and luminous, to complement her gown.

Paris Hilton gave us a twirl – as she so often does – showing us the full capacity of her fuchsia pink Canker Kaçar gown.

She glows in pink, and I much prefer this gown to the Basil Soda gown she wore to the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Benefit.

Sharon Stone continues to keep tackiness at bay, wearing a stunning Roberto Cavalli black strapless gown, with a feathered skirt.

Top 10 Dresses
Abbie Cornish might be the surprise inclusion here, but the more I saw her Toni Maticevski gown, the more I loved it.

My mind changes all the time as to who was my overall Best Dressed, which is why I picked a top 10.

Who was your favourite?

2009 Cannes Film Festival Most Worn Designer – Roberto Cavalli
On my count Roberto Cavalli dressed 18 of the most beautiful women at Cannes Film Festival.

Dolce & Gabbana followed, which is not surprising considering their party at Cannes, and third was Christian Dior.

Couturier of 2009 Cannes Film Festival – Armani Prive
Armani Privé was the most worn of the couture designers at Cannes.  Their dresses were mostly worn by the judges.

My count made it 10, followed by Chanel and Versace.

Cannes Couture Queen & Best Dressed Judge – Isabelle Huppert
Head judge, and two-time Palme d’Or winner herself Isabelle Huppert wore more Couture than any other woman to walk the red carpet.

She oozed sophistication, and wasn’t afraid to risks, all great qualities Cate Blanchett possesses.

Last year, the utterly sexy IT shoe was the YSL Tribute Platform T-Strap Sandal.

Julianne Moore was the first celebrity to wear them back in January 2008, then every celebrity from Eva Longoria, to the Kardashian sisters, seemed to snap them up in every colour.

Everyone then moved onto the YSL Trib Two heels. All except Olivia Palermo.

I have a pair of beige, blue and coral striped Marc Jacobs heels, which I had for 5 years, known as my “summer heels”. Last week one of them snapped, and I still haven’t had the courage to throw them away, so I understand how you can be attached to one pair of heels.

Since April 29, Olivia has attended 6 events, wearing pretty florals, pastels colours, paisley prints, LBDs, a sequined jacket, and a black tuxedo jacket, but the heels have remained the same.

She obviously really loves the heels, but I remember a time when celebs wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing twice. With the credit crunch hanging over all of us, it appears celebs want to show us they’re ordinary, just like us.

I’m ordinary, my friends and family are ordinary. I look to people like Olivia to give us something new, especially someone with her style and taste. I hope she switches things up soon.

This is the first time in a long time I have LOVED what Rihanna is wearing head-to-toe.

She wowed onlookers in a sexy black and nude strapless Alexander Wang corset dress, with Jil Sander pumps.

Some might say she was a little overdressed for a mere afternoon visit to her pal, Kanye West, but I say she looks fabulous. Soft, feminine and beautiful.

Whilst having some much needed retail therapy, hitting several boutiques including Intermix in New York, Rihanna wore a Matthew Williamson gathered leather coat, as a belted dress.

The look was paired with black knee high boots, and reptile accessories.

This is also another great look.  Not too over the top – with the exclusion of her hair – but still showing a lots of personality.

She’s starting to be fabulous again. I hope it lasts.
