Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Monthly Archives: April 2009

We find it hard to forgive red carpet re-runs at high profile events, because the pictures are beamed all over the world, so there should be no excuse for not knowing x has already worn the same dress.

At 60th Primetime Emmy Awards January Jones wore this white Dolce & Gabbana corset gown. This is about the time she was just getting into her red carpet groove.

We were shocked when model Marisa Miller arrived at the 44th annual Academy Of Country Music Awards this weekend, wearing the same dress.

Shocked because she hadn’t done her red carpet homework, but then not so shocked that she worked the hell out of this dress, with her freakishly perfect body.

When you are up against a supermodel, there is usually only one winner. Marisa wins this for me.

When I was invited by Net-A-Porter to view Jason Wu’s Fall 2009 collection, I was honoured to have a one-on-one with the 26 year old designer.

As I introduced myself, Jason told me that he loved my blog. Surely he doesn’t have time to read blogs, when he’s dressing the First Lady, and producing collections.

He told me that a friend had forwarded the link of Katie Holmes wearing his Fall 2009 strapless dress, after he had trouble finding a full-length picture.

I was curious to know what had inspired Jason’s Fall 2009 collection. “Arthur Rackham; (think Alice in Wonderland and Tinkerbell) this is because his illustrations were very whimsical and fairytale like, yet mature and diverse”.

After Jason’s Fall 2009 presentation, some journalists had said Jason was deliberately moving away from his uptown aesthetic. “It wasn’t deliberate,” he said “but a natural progression. As I grow as a designer, so do my collections. If I kept to the same formula, I wouldn’t be challenging myself as a designer. But I’m a girlie girl designer, that will never change.”

I asked Jason which season he prefers to design for. “I find myself producing collections that are almost seasonless. When my Fall 2009 collection arrives at Net-A-Porter in August, customers will want to wear the clothes now. So I’m mindful of this when I design, producing pieces in a mix of fabrics.”

When I asked Jason who was his muse, I was expecting him to say an actress or old Hollywood legend, but he said “Chanel Iman. She’ such a sweetheart. She’s very elegant and tall. I also love Jourdan Dunn, and Karlie Kloss”.

With celebrities forming alliances with designers, I asked him how he felt about giving/loaning celebrities his clothes. “When it’s right, it’s right. I don’t feel the need to do this in order to promote the brand. Once a celebrity is loaned a dress, that dress will not be loaned out to anyone else”.

So we shouldn’t expect to see any celebs on my Who Wore It Better? polls I asked him. “Not unless the other person has brought it,” he laughed.

I didn’t want to spend the whole interview talking about Michelle Obama, but I had to get one question in, so I asked him how felt when he saw Michelle wearing his dress at the inauguration ball.

“I was amazed and awestruck. I had no idea. I found out with everyone else. It was the same with the Vogue cover.”

“She’s an amazing woman, and it’s fantastic that she’s the first First Lady to have supported new designers the way she does.”

The floor-length, one-of-a-kind ivory silk chiffon dress with organza flowers and Swarovski crystal rhinestones, is at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Jason has no plans to recreate the dress.

Jason Wu is now available on Net-A-Porter.com, but this is a partnership that had been in the works for a while. Net-A-Porter.com is known for adding new designers to their roster of international brands often, so they aren’t trying to jump on any bandwagon.

It has been so long since we last saw Victoria Beckham use the sidewalk as her catwalk, that I was starting to think like the rest of us, she was tightening her Fendi belt.

I was wrong because Victoria was back in her playground – shopping – in Milan this afternoon.

The fashion designer was spotted in Emporio Armani – the brand who she modeled for – wearing Balmain.

Both her leather jacket, and black tie-dye skinny jeans were from the Spring 2009 collection, whilst she carried her favourite Hermes bag.

Time for a new ‘do Mrs B.

My mother always says be careful what you wish for.

I always say I hate celebs always wearing black, and pray that they incorporate more colour into their closets, now Katy Perry has done so…and then some.

The feisty singer was spotted leaving her concert at The Fillmore in New York last night wearing the multi-coloured Japanese-style printed Basso & Brooke Spring 2009 pant suit, with her taupe BE&G bag.

I don’t know about you, but I think she looks great. It’s a bold print, and she’s not shying away from it.

The runway platforms would have been preferred to the ballet flats, but she still works it with the flats, so kudos to her.

For the first time ever, I’m totally in love with Miley Cyrus. Her cover and editorial for the May 2009 edition of Teen Vogue, has her looking cute, and age appropriate.

I love the hippy/bohemian feel to the shoot, the daisy’s in her hair, and the picture of her on a horse.

Miley will begin shooting her first dramatic film this summer, a role Nicholas Sparks (author of The Notebook) wrote specifically with her in mind. “I’d like to do something like Revolutionary Road or Garden State next,” Miley muses. “I definitely want to be more challenged.”

Here are some more extracts from her interview:

On her fellow Hollywood stars: “Jude Law is so adorable in ‘The Holiday’, Javier Bardem, is so sexy, and Gerard Butler. You’ve seen him in ‘P.S. I Love You’, right? My favorite. I bawled my eyes out. Scarlett Johansson. She is, honestly, the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. I went to ‘He’s Just Not That into You’ with Justin, and I was covering his eyes. I’m not a huge Rob Pattinson fan. Girls aren’t really in love with Rob; they’re in love with Edward.”

On love at first sight: “I believe in love at first sight. It just hasn’t happened to me. The first time I saw Justin, I walked right by him. Love doesn’t come from attraction, but from somewhere deeper. [Justin] is my best friend.”

On writing with BFFs Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, or Taylor Swift: “Demi and I are the most alike. I like to keep my friendship separate. Otherwise, competition starts.”

This issue hits newsstand April 14.

You can shop Miley’s shoot by buying her See by Chloe floral smock dress from Net-A-Porter’s US site for $600, or the international site for £345/€445.

Grand Opening the One&Only Cape Town Resort, South Africa

Thandie Newton wore a really gorgeous Chanel black dress, with a cute bow tie on the front.

The ruffles sleeves added to the girlie girl nature of the dress, whilst she completed her look with a pair of YSL gold studded heels.

Thandie always looks her best, and never lets me down.

“Race To Witch Mountain” London Premiere

I must start off by saying that I think Carla Gugino’s make-up really lets her down.

It takes a lot away from her outstanding dove grey Reem Acra silk chiffon strapless dress, which is quite exquisite, with its embroidered bodice.

Her look is complete with Jimmy Choo sandals.

“Observe And Report” LA Premiere

Anna Faris is a young actress, so she can get away with this plum Azzaro dress, which looks like a bikini from the waist up.

Although I don’t like the dress, she looks amazing.

8th Annual Comedy For A Cure, LA

Sporting an impressive bouffant, Teri Hatcher wore a toga-style beige dress by Monique Lhuillier.

Whereas her Desperate Housewives co-star Dana Delany, opted for a cute flirty Prada black taffeta dress, with ruffles and a pleated hem.

I really appreciate the maroon heels. Black would’ve been so one-dimensional.
