Sorry but, why isn’t Penelope Cruz in the clasification of best dressed of the oscars, it’s more than obvious that she was much better than Queen Latifah, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Tilda Swinson, Natalie Portman, Marion Cotillard… I can’t write them all cause Idon’t want to spend the hole day here, Penelope was one of the best dressed, even I think that if we should do a classification of just 3 actresses Penelope should be there. Please, be more seriouse, just because she’s not such a Hollywood or bollywood product she don’t has to be hide of such this way of your clasification. Thankyou

  2. Fashion Critic February 23, 2009 at 19:38 #

These are the 10 best dress in accordance to the comments that I read on the best dressed list.

Penelope Cruz is part of Hollywood, I think her Oscar proves that, so your attempt to make this into a race issue is just ridiculous.

Oh and I am VERY serous about my blog.

I was up until 7am working on it, so don’t insult my integrity.

  3. Lisa February 23, 2009 at 19:39 #

Penelope Cruz is my best dressed with little competition from the others. why is she not included in the poll????

  4. Ahot February 23, 2009 at 19:41 #

First this: people need to understand, this is the place where only the look wins. Fans of whoever should stop being angry if their beloved star didn´t make it in the best dressed list. DON´T TAKE IT PERSONAL!!!

  5. Anonymous February 23, 2009 at 19:46 #

I am so sorry but I can’t understand why Penelope Cruz is not on the list, she was the best one!

  6. Fashion Critic February 23, 2009 at 19:50 #

    AMEN Ahot

  7. Dana February 23, 2009 at 19:52 #

I thought Penelope’s look was fine, but very similar to her look from 2007. Not best-dressed worthy.

I think Marisa’s gown is FABULOUS. She gets my vote.

  8. Ahot February 23, 2009 at 19:59 #

Second: back to the real stuff.
It was so damn hard to choose!
    1. Marisa, coz her dress is so complicated, and this is what Couture is about. A wonderful piece of work, and she had the guts to wear it, and she did it well
    2. Tilda of course – i could only vote for one :(
    3. Freida – almost as beautiful as Halle.
    4. Halle. who else? – so beautiful! a shame she wasn´t on the red carpet

  9. Anonymous February 23, 2009 at 20:00 #

I really love your blog and religiously read it every single day. It’s the only place I can rely on for a balanced reporting on red carpet fashion.

However, I really do wish you had put Kate Winslet on the list. I know she went for a dark color again and that was frustrating, but she carried herself so beautifully in the dress and it fit her perfectly. Combined with her Grace Kelly hair and she was my pick for best dressed – it reminded me so much of the Golden Days of Hollywood. I think one needs to judge the dress alone and not be clouded by what she has worn in the past.

  10. Ahot February 23, 2009 at 20:03 #

    Thanks FC :).

  11. Anissa February 23, 2009 at 20:07 #

If JA wins I don’t know how exactly I’ll protest. Yes she’s in a lovely dress, but all that proves is her stylist managed to zip her into the right gown…her lack of any effort w/ her hair totally ruins the look…if I had made the list I’d have substituted Taraji P. Henson, but hey it’s not my list, so I’ll just vote for those you did pick ;)

You are discounting Queen Latfiah purely because she is a larger lady.

Aren’t larger ladies ALLOWED to be fabulous?

Reese Witherspoon’s Rodarte dress would have been MORE fashion forward had she worn the runway version, instead of modifying it so much that it is barely recognisable.

I had said earlier this week that if Kate wore another dark colour she would end up on my worst dressed list. She did, so there was no chance of her making any best dressed list.

Cruz’ best days on the red carpet seem to be over, I have been saying this for weeks now.

This was a better effort from her, but by no way did she deserve to be on the best dressed list. For a start her bangs/fringe was not suited to that dress.

  13. k February 23, 2009 at 20:11 #

It was hard choosing between Halle and Natalie Portman, but I went with Natalie since her overall look was so breathtaking. I called her best dressed on the red carpet and I still think so. But Halle was so close!

  14. Bethany February 23, 2009 at 20:14 #

I can’t picture anyone else as best dressed from last night after seeing Leslie Mann in Pamella Roland. SHE WAS HOT!

  15. Sara February 23, 2009 at 20:18 #

Too bad you didn't include Penelope Cruz in the pool. She was best dressed in my opinion <3

  16. Anonymous February 23, 2009 at 20:23 #

No, I’m definitely not counting Latifah out because she’s bodacious. Her dress just wasn’t special enough, that’s all. As I’ve said, I adore her, but I’m not willing to say it was one of my fav gowns just because I’m afraid someone is going to say I have something against curvy women.
Not really convinced by the rest of your arguments, but let’s leave it that way. Both of us have better stuff to do, right? Have a rest! :)

  17. Carmen February 23, 2009 at 20:27 #

I love Marisa Tomei (simply stunning dress and great hairstyle) and Jennifer Aniston was my second best(yes, i’m proud!). Natalie Portman come in third place. Not crazy about Freida and Anne, though I love both them. I also loved Evan Rachel in Elie Saab

  18. Fashion Critic February 23, 2009 at 20:28 #

Everyone has an opinion. Ours just differ. Like you said, lets leave it at that.

  19. heather ♥ February 23, 2009 at 20:29 #

people can be so horrible! which i suppose is why they comment as "Anonymous". so silly!
EVERYONE's opinions for best/worst dressed will be different! we're all attracted for different people and different looks.
regardless of what anyone thinks of your picks FC, you are so committed to this blog (i read every day!) and i think we'd all be hard pressed to find another fashion source SO up to date and SO thoroughly organized and put together. you do an amazing job! and i appreciate reading each and every day! so thank you for staying up ALL night! (over in England the Oscars were taking place between something like 1 and 6am!) so that we could see all the dresses and read up on the fashions from the evening.
    xo heather ♥

  20. Nik February 23, 2009 at 20:41 #

I think this list looks about right. Penelope was vintage couture and really, she looked great but I think that dress was so beautiful and too easy…anyone could have pulled it off. I mean, it was one of those gowns you see in museums.

Besides, this site is about fashion, in the mode, the current…right?

  21. robbie February 23, 2009 at 21:01 #

this is hard i was seriously wows by my queen, but then wowed by SJP and marion. i love how queen dressed her curves, but i also love SJPs cinderella style gown and the marion for finally looking good this year.

im gonna give it to marion

  22. Anonymous February 23, 2009 at 21:07 #

I don´t like Penelope Cruz, but I think she was the best dressed this Oscars, and if I can´t vote her, I prefer not to vote (and it is nothing personal)

… and I write as anonymous because I don´t have a Google account, but my nick is Nika.

  23. Alyssa February 23, 2009 at 21:12 #

I’m in the line of the last comment. I’m also a daily reader of the blog and I think that although everyone has its own opinion and taste on the outfits is undoubtable the dedication of FC to the blog.

It is also great to discuss on fashion! is good to have different opinions and styles.

My favourite without doubt is Marisa Tomei (so risky and so successful)

  24. Ling February 23, 2009 at 21:51 #

I think people are forgetting that this is FC’s blog, she has her own opinion about who she thought was the Best Dressed and if it doesn’t match yours then fine, but no need to be insulting about it. Obviously there are some people who I thought were better dressed than the ones on this list, but that doesn’t matter, you can still say who you personally thought was the best dressed without being childish about it. Out of this list I chose Marisa, but overall I would have chosen Satsuki Mitchell (pretty random I know!)

  25. Flora February 23, 2009 at 21:59 #

Unfortunately it just wasn’t a vintage year for Oscar fashion, just as it wasn’t at the Baftas earlier in the month. There’s nothing really memorable here, nothing that come the end of the year everyone will say, “That’s GOT to be one of the top ten frocks of 2009!”

I think the fact that no-one is really racing ahead in the poll backs up my theory – there’s nothing there that makes you go “wow!”. I voted for Jennifer Aniston, although in retrospect I wish I’d voted for Natalie Portman instead. Although I really feel (shrugs) about the whole damn lot of them, to be honest. The Vanity Fair frocks were MUCH better. Kate Bosworth! Awesome!

  26. Jess February 23, 2009 at 22:08 #

FC, this bold comment explains everything you do so well. I was just looking at the People.com best dressed list and could not believe that I found not one but FIVE of my personal worst-dressed on the list: Nicole Kidman, Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum, Jessica Biel, and Beyonce. It is obvious that those sites pander to the stars so they don’t lose out on a story later, and that’s why your site is so fantastic. It’s not about being a fan of anyone in particular, it’s about the styles they wore and what you objectively think about them. It’s really shocking that some people take this so seriously and so personally that they think it’s OK to say such rude things to you.

  27. Fashion Critic February 23, 2009 at 22:15 #

Jess, thank you for resting my case.

  28. Ayesha February 23, 2009 at 22:25 #

    Tilda! Definitely..SO chic.

  29. Elle Woods February 23, 2009 at 23:01 #

lmao @ Pram..i cant remember the last time i heard that word used.

Yeah seriously….you may have issues with her choices but there is no need to be insulting. Whats going on? Lately it seems ppl cant handle another person not agreeing with them..they have to take the route of gutter rats.
Lets act like ladies. Its only fashion after all :D

  30. robbie February 23, 2009 at 23:23 #

why are people being so mean to FC, she uses her own personal time to make a great site for people to read and learn about FASHION!

how many times does she have to explain the choices came from the most positive comments for each celeb.

personally i loved queen latifah but i voted marion because i thought her dress was stunning.

  31. Anonymous February 23, 2009 at 23:24 #

    My top 3:
1 Freida, she very easily wins for me.
    2 Penelope
    3 Sarah Jessica Parker

  32. Fashion Critic February 23, 2009 at 23:31 #

Robbie, don’t worry. The haters just prove to me that I must be doing something right.

  33. Kay February 23, 2009 at 23:51 #

I chose Halle, she looks stunning! I loved Jennifer, Marisa and Anne’s gowns as well. This was hard.

  34. freida lover February 24, 2009 at 03:16 #

    1. Freida
    2. Marisa
    3. Halle

I am a big Freida fan but i have voted for others based on the look alone many times. (after all it is a fashion blog) but i really think she deserves it. She is the newest face among all these stars… she is certainly not used to this so i think she made a different choice that was not seen on the red carpet last night and it paid off.. the colour for me was brilliant.

    Nicole

  35. Louise February 24, 2009 at 04:42 #

FC thanks for all your wonderful blogging. In comparison with most of the magazines and tv shows which present their best/worst dressed, I find your coverage to be far more comprehensive and your opinions always reveal a much deeper sartorial knowledge.

My top picks were SJP – she looked so ethereal and I loved the classically feminine shape. Also Freida Pinto for picking such a unique and fashion-forward dress in a radiant colour!

  36. Anonymous February 24, 2009 at 05:41 #

you keep doing what you do FC!!

    IMO,Queen Latifah actually looked lovely!
I liked Penelope’s look…but I used to love her looks before, with her voluptuous hair and daring choices!

but I actually am agreeing with the results of this poll!
Marisa was best dressed followed by Jen Aniston!(I never thought I’s see her in a best dressed list, except that PEOPLE one…lol)

  37. OnCloud9 February 24, 2009 at 06:25 #

i wouldnt say anything remotely negative to you FC cause i think your blog and your work are absolutely OUTSTANDING and i’m soooo addicted

but personally my vote would have gone to penelope cruz
i was just stunned when i saw her on the red carpet. my jaw actually dropped! amazing

but from your list – marisa tomei definitely (inspite of loving freida so)…the bottom half of that dress made me gasp (amazing amazing)

  38. Vera February 24, 2009 at 07:08 #

    I’m sorry, but where’s Penelope?

She is a real best dressed!!

  39. Naomi February 24, 2009 at 12:25 #

Ooh this was a really hard choice but I finally voted for Marisa but I really loved Queen Latifah’s and SJP’s dresses.

People.com included Beyonce as one of the best-dressed? Really?!

FC thanks for the awesome posts on the Oscars, way better than all the other blogs and websites. Love your blog.

  40. Fashion Critic February 24, 2009 at 13:06 #

Thanks Naomi. And yes someone told me about the Beyonce best dressed inclusion, and I could not believe it.

People.com have to keep their future cover stars happy. I have no such pressure.

  41. Hoardmeister February 24, 2009 at 17:02 #

FC, I understand your choices. I’m writing my own blog (did the Worst Dressed yesterday: Beyonce made the list). I voted for Queen Latifah, because I agree, she looked fabulous. Right now I am working on Best Dressed. This blog is amazing.

  42. Sara February 24, 2009 at 17:27 #

I have to comment once again.
"Cruz' best days on the red carpet seem to be over, I have been saying this for weeks now." I respect your opinion but the fact that she has been wearing black so ofter lately doesn't mean that her fashion choices are bad. You've said a few times that you're sick of her choosing this colour. The thing is that not only Pe does this. Victoria Beckham also wears black almost all the time lately and you're not criticizing her the same way as Penelope.
Her dress is in a way similar to her 2007 Versace gown but I don't see anything wrong with it since in 2007 she was chosen best dressed by many critics, fashion magazines etc.
This year Vogue put her at #8 out of 10 on their Oscars 2009 best dressed list.
Please don't take my comment as an insult or something mean. As I said before I respect your opinion and the fact that it's your blog & your best dressed list :)

  43. Fashion Critic February 24, 2009 at 17:46 #

    Sara,

We all have opinions which differ, this I respect.

I understand you feel quite frustrated about my opinion towards Penelope, but this is my truth.

I am always looking for perfection from these actresses, because I put them on a pedestal. This is not difficult for them with the stylists, free clothes etc they are given.

If I had their means I wouldn’t be hitting the red carpet in boring black dresses, that’s for sure.

With regards to Victoria Beckham, I did a whole post criticizing her for wearing only her own collection and only black all the time. You can see that post here.

With regards to Vogue’s Top 10, with no disrespect to you, Blake Lively was on that list, and we ALL know what a fashion disaster she is.

I don’t know everything about fashion, I am learning all the time. I am just a girl with a passion for fashion, a good eye at remembering designers on celebrities and a passion for the red carpet. I don’t consider myself an expert, nor famous – as someone said I thought I was recently – I am passionate about fashion just like you are.

I can feel your passion in your message, and I truly respect that.

I am not trying to be patronizing, or disrespectful to you, so I hope you can understand the good nature in which I am replying to your message, as written text can be ambiguous.

    FC x

  44. Leo February 24, 2009 at 18:33 #

This is hard, I adored Marissa Tomei, the construction of that dress is breathtaking and she looks radiant. But I also loved Natalie Portman, that is such a interesting colour and not an easy one, but she made it look perfect, plus her face is just so beautiful it lightens everything up.

My third pick would be the one and only Sophia Loren, she’s one sexy cat, and still got it.

  45. Sara Blanco February 24, 2009 at 19:51 #

    Penélope Cruz was the best.

  46. Anonymous February 24, 2009 at 20:12 #

English is not my language, so it’s very difficult for me to explain my comment. But I would like to add that I usually hate Penelope (as an actress and as a fashion icon) but this time I saw her and I remembered Audrey (… and I love Audrey) As I was reading all the comments I agree that the choice was so classical, and she does not dress a risky garment, but I like her much more than in other Oscars.

I would like to be grateful to Fashion Critic for the effort of writting this wonderful blog. Because it is sure to take her so much work. Thanks. YOU ARE THE BEST!

    Signed: Nika

ahhhh! everytime you do amazing posts like that i adore and respect you even more.
keep up the GREAT work! :)

  48. Anonymous February 25, 2009 at 10:48 #

I personally think that you take this log very seriously coz i am so in ♥ with your blog..

but I have to say that I absolutely agree that I thought Penelope Cruz deserve a chance to be nominated for the oscar’s best dress coz she is just so boring in the bafta, golden globe and the sags, and I think she looked amazing at the oscars.
    ESPECIALLY it is not black..
eventhough I prefer her without her bangs..

    But still she looks gorgeous..
and i have to say, even more than tilda, natalie, and marion.

on the other hand, I don’t think angelina’s dress is THAT bad..
She looks gorgeous to me and the back of the dress looks so beautiful especially when she walks..

By the way marisa didn’t look that good.,, at some angle.., I could see her bra..
    Nude bra..
    Peeking up from her dress..

    That’s all..
    Keep up the good work..

    ♥Ratna♥

  49. Anonymous February 25, 2009 at 11:04 #

    oh and by the way..,

I think Meryl Streep looked elegant..
She should be in the poll too along with Penelope..

  50. Sara February 25, 2009 at 19:54 #

Fashion Critic, I prefectly understand the meaning of your reply and don’t find it disrespectful by any means :)

    Sara

  51. whitestroke February 28, 2009 at 19:33 #

I didn’t even mean to reply, but once again I’m amazed by people being so rude and not getting such obvious things. Is it really that hard to just vote for looks in the poll? What do you get out of fighting over who YOU think looked the best and why she’s not in the poll, etc.? Jesus. Get a life!

I’m just grateful for FC working hard on this blog and posting us all these amazing posts to enjoy. You have your own opinion and no one can take that away from you. Why do you feel a need to force it on everyone else?
