Red Carpet Fashion Awards

Monthly Archives: January 2009

The Chanel Spring 2009 Haute Couture collection was a vision in pure white, with the occasional dash of black breaking up the ethereal theme.

The traditional Chanel suit was reworked in new fabrics, with sequins, PVC, appliqué and delicate embroidery taking over from the expected bouclé.

Karl Lagerfeld presented a-lines and square shouldered shapes. Skinny pants, shrinking jackets, cropped sleeves, and fantasy gowns.

The paper rosette headpieces were simply divine, and provided the perfect finishing touch.

The venue was covered in tumbling organza, appliqué flowers and gigantic paper blooms to set the ethereal tone at the Chanel show.

We are not used to seeing a lot of white on the red carpet, so I would be interested in seeing who would wear these pieces.

Olga Kurylenko was back to her breath-taking best wearing a tailored white skirt, and a sleeveless black sweater, with stunning statement necklace. All Chanel of course.

Sporting fresh cut bangs, Keira Knightley – the face of Coco Mademoiselle – was also head to toe in Chanel.

She looks gorgeous wearing a fabulous tweed skirt, a black sweater and studded heels.

Tres Chic.

Rachel Stevens arrived at the 2008 National Television Awards at The Royal Albert Hall in London back in October wearing a Herve Leger Ombre bandage dress.

The Strictly Come Dancing star wore her dress with grey pumps and bangles. Her hair was teased and her eyes were smokey.

TV presenter Kelly Brook wore the same dress, when she arrived at the 2008 British Comedy Awards in London last month.

There is not a lot to pick between these two British brunette beauties, but I prefer Rachel’s hair and make-up, so she wins for me.

You can buy this Herve Leger dress from US site for $1,590.

On the international site the dress is currently on sale. You can buy it at the reduced price of £907.77/€1,387.79, and get a further 20% off at the check out, when you put in the promo code ‘WINTER’.

When I arrived at the Givenchy Spring 2009 Haute Couture show just before it’s 7pm scheduled start time, I knew it would not start at 7pm, because a van pulled up unloading the couture gowns.

Like it or not whilst waiting to get in I already had a preview of the nude gowns.

Whilst queuing I was also entertained by the models – Sessilee Lopez and Lily Donaldson – as they came out of hair and make-up, which was located opposite where the show was taking place. Both appeared with those white strips around their heads, to keep their hair off their perfectly made up faces.

The hall was decorated with beautiful petals all over the floor, and as the lights when down, the the first model was presented.

In stark contrast to Riccardo Tisci’s very hard and edgy Spring 2009 RTW collection, this collection was ultra feminine with feathery chiffon layers, bouffant shoulders, visible corset under chiffon layers. The slight edge came with a few touches of leather, and heavy metal neck pieces.

The nudes I had witnessed outside were accompanied by pale violets, bright lemons, mint greens, black and whites.

One of my favourite pieces was the black Gothic queen gown worn by British model Lily Donaldson. The pictures do not quite do it justice, as it was a truly magnificent gown with a criss-cross detail at the back, and the puffed shoulders sparkled with jeweled embellishment.

The craftsmanship was exquisite, I was drooling over all the gowns, which were all very wearable. Oscar worthy, they certainly are.

Singer Roisin Murphy, Daphne Guinness, Kanye West, Anna Wintour and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld were all in the front row. Carine had changed from her earlier look at Christian Lacroix, into a all black Givenchy pant suit.

At the end of the show we received a pack full of detailed descriptions of all the elegant pieces.

I had a very entertaining, fashion fun filled day, which required lots of walking. I did carry flats in my bag, but because my Pour La Victoire heels were so incredibly comfortable, I didn’t need them.

Paris Hilton Arrives In London

Apparently there were pink taxis all over London yesterday, which could have only meant that Paris Hilton was in town.

Paris arrived at her press screening of Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend, wearing a very cute pale pink silk chiffon Jenny Packham dress with silver crystal beading embellishment.

Her silver pumps were also embellished, and she arrived with a Fendi bag, and winter white coat with a fur collar.

Nokia 5800 Launch Party, London

Of course Paris did not have an early night. She attended this Nokia launch event wearing a cute heavily embellished halter dress by Thai designer Disaya, with matching two tone heels.

Here we see yet another interesting look from Lady Ga-Ga.

With her hair in her now trademark Minnie Mouse-esque bow, the singer wore a black ultra-tight mini dress, with a large latex bow on the front.

She partnered her look with hot pink heels, black Ray Bans and leather gloves.

Quite a tame look for her ;)

VV Brown stood out in a bright blue Ashish for Topshop sequined mini dress. She paired her dress with leggings and peep-toe lace-up ankle boots.

The singer’s hair was rolled up into a retro quiff.

G’Day Australia Black Tie Gala, New York

Nicole Kidman stood alongside director/friend Baz Lurhmann at the G’Day Australia black tie gala at New York Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The actress wore an incredibly sexy black gown, with an asymmetrical neckline, and a very daring thigh-high split.

She surprisingly completed her look with a pair of neon orange heels.

Santa Barbara Film Festival

Penelope Cruz was presented with the Chopin Outstanding Performer of the Year trophy on Saturday night during the 24th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The Spanish actress wore a black dress Azzedine Alaia sleeveless dress with black tights and black cut-out pumps.

The dress is cute, but the camera is unforgiving, as it exposes her flesh coloured satin bra underneath.

After a succession of unimpressive red carpet looks, I am starting to worry that she will not wow me at the Oscars next month.

Costa Book Awards 2009, London

Rosamund Pike arrived wearing a RM by Roland Mouret Zola sleeveless dress.

You may not be able to see from this picture, but the dress has a very heavily detailed nude shoulder straps, pleats on the hip, a fish tail style to the front of the skirt.

“Hedda Gabler” Broadway Opening Night After Party, New York

Mary Louise Parker wore an satin teal blue Carlos Miele Spring 2008 halter dress, with black heels and Ivanka Trump jewels.

Yesterday my second show was the Christian Lacroix Spring 2009 Haute Couture show.

The collection, as expected, was very colourful and beautiful, mixing ultra feminine and romantic looks, with a touch chic of masculine tailoring.

The colours were vibrant, tropical for some pieces, and there were also prints, stripes and heavy embellishments.

The show opened with military inspired looks, then a series of tailored suits, followed by dresses with boleros, puffy skirts, flamenco-style dresses, and then the gowns. Each one more spectacular than the next.

My favourites were the pink ombre one above, which would look great on someone like Penelope Cruz, who has been lacking for me lately. The gold dress is of course reserved. in my eye. for Cate Blanchett. Only she could wear that sculptured dress so elegantly.

The hair was pulled up top, with a single braid. The accessories were big.

Big jeweled earrings, big plastic bangles, and earrings worn as bangles. These are fine details, but they made a big impact.

French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld was in the front row looking gorgeous wearing a tan trench coat, which almost looked like a chic dress.

I had a 1000 watt blub pointing in my direction, but I was able to get a few great pictures from the show.

I need a faster reaction camera.
